For what it's worth, I'm on A/C first and then Taxol. My onc is a no puke advocate so I start each cycle with Emend capsules and an anti-nausea in the first IV bag. I also have two other anti-nausea prescriptions but have not taken either one of them. No nausea. I do crash for a couple of days, usually 6 and 7 so that's worked into my planning.
I am bald. It'll grow back. American Cancer Society offers new wigs at no charge. The "boutique" near me had a very large selection of colors, styles and lengths. I got two of them. I'm concerned about the upcoming Taxol because I've read so much about neuropathy and bone pain. |

MaryFox, I have found weekly taxol to be surprisingly easy. Are you going to be getting it weekly? I honestly have had mininal side effects. Very, very slight neuropathy on the bottoms of my feet. The fatigue has increased more after around week 6, but the first five weeks were easy for me. I got a UTI between weeks 6 and 7 that set me back for a couple weeks, but that is hopefully gone for good now.
I'm just curious about where you are getting your treatments. My husband and I were thinking of spending December and January in Florida while I get my A/C. We have friends and family in Vero Beach and Stuart, so I was trying to figure out what was available. The closest NCI facility is in Tampa.

Hi, MaryFox. I finished 4 DD Taxol after 4 DD A/C and I found the Taxol to be so much easier than A/C in terms of side effects. I did not experience bone pain, and was tired, but nothing like A/C. I wish you luck.

Thanks for the encouraging words about Taxol. I've been very lucky so far with only mild side effects. But I can't wait to get my taste buds back. That's the most annoying side effect so far. Everything tastes like cardboard.

Well, everything pretty much tastes like cardboard to me on Taxol. It doesn't help that I've cut out salt (to reduce inflammation) and use very, very little butter. My kitchen table is filled with big containers of things like Mrs. Dash and I load my foods down with all kinds of spices....but it all seems pretty bland.

I just finished my last Taxol treatment yesterday! Whoo Hoo! I made it through all 12 weeks and still have hair which makes me very happy.
I'll be starting AC in two weeks. I guess I'll be a baldy shortly thereafter. It was nice having hair while it lasted.

Congrats Simple!!! I remember the cardboard taste very well!! YUK! 1/2 way through is something to celebrate!! Just keep on plugging through and before you know it you'll be in my shoes looking back a year ago and saying WOW I finished all my chemo on 12/20/12!! I can't believe time has flown! As for the hair - that must have been nice to keep the hair so long! They told me on A/C to expect it to start coming out at 2 weeks after I started. On the morning of 2 weeks I pulled on the hair and nothing came out........I was kind of like wow how nice. At 4 pm I pulled on my hair and a handful came out!! I was hoping their prediction was going to be off.....well, it wasn't! LOL Seems like a LONG time ago! You can do this!! It's not fun but doable!

I actually asked to have the AC start date moved up a week so I wouldn't be hitting day 14 of AC right on Christmas Eve. I just couldn't take the thought of losing my hair on Christmas, not to mention getting my second infusion of AC on Dec. 23. It would have made for a yucky Christmas. Instead, I think I'll be losing my hair a week earlier....hopefully, it will be over and done with and I'll be used to my bald look by Christmas. Also, I'm hoping I'll be feeling better since Christmas will fall on my "off" week for AC. Thankfully, my MO agreed to move up the start date. She's nice about things like that and I appreciate it. Every little bit helps in making life easier during treatment. Congratulations on getting a pCR with your neoadjuvant treatment, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get the same result. I'll find out in Feb. when I have my surgery. Kay

Finished with A/C and starting 12 weeks of Taxol on December 5. I was hoping that I'd start getting my taste buds back, but from what I read here, it's not likely. I really hate to eat these days.

It might be better with Taxol than with AC in terms of taste. I never really had a bad taste in my mouth that some people describe with AC while I was on Taxol. We can compare notes in a few weeks. I start AC on Dec. 3. I asked to have the start date moved up a week so that I wouldn't be getting an infusion right before Christmas. We decided to stay in Tennessee for my treatments, I felt like I wanted to keep things simple as possible. Taxol really wasn't that bad. The hardest part for me was that I would crash from the pre-infusion steroids on day two or three each week. After about three weeks of sobbing uncontrollably during each crash, I finally figured out I just needed to go to bed and try to sleep through it or veg out in front of the TV. It also helped me to realize that it was a chemically induced mood swing. I still felt terrible going through it, but I learned it was temporary and the next day I would be back to "normal". I'm guessing I'll have a similar experience with the AC if they give a lot of pre-infusion steroids with that one too. I hope Taxol goes well for you. Kay

Mary and Simple, One thing I have found on this board and with others that have gone through A/C and Taxol.....everyone's body is so different and the side effects vary so much from person to person!!! Simple, Nice to have an oncologist that will work with you! As for cutting off the hair I did not have it shaved off completely...I had them cut it to 1 inch and not all of it actually fell out (90% did LOL) but I felt I looked a little better with even just 1 inch of some hair - the problem came when all the hair dye came off the little hair I had left and I had to look at white hair (mostly my pink scalp!! haha I can laugh now) I ended up after it grew in to keep my white hair!! Something I would have never thought I would do....but I kind of like it! Also.......did you take a steroid pill the day before your infusion and then for the 2 days following? I did and never felt that "crash" that you had.......It could be worth asking about as you go into A/C. Good luck and I hope minimal side effects for you both!

Simple -
My A/C treatments began with an infusion of anti-nausea med and steroid. Then also took steroids on days 2, 3, and 4. My crash started late on day 5 and lasts 2 days. I just sleep - might as well because I'm useless. Naps are good things. Good luck with the A/C. I took Emend on days 1, 2, and 3 and had NO nausea at all. Love my onc. Mary

Finished Taxol today. YAY! I know that it will take time but I'm anxious to get my brain back and my taste buds - on a day to day basis, the taste buds are top priority. Right now I hate the feel of food in my mouth. UGH! Rads are next. There's light at the end of the tunnel. Life is good.
