Topic: Horrible weekend Posted: Jun 16 2013 at 10:26pm |

I just wanted to let everyone know that on Friday I wasn't feeling well a week after my first email and I did not eat my dinner and wasn't feeling hungry. I then started to have a fever and it graduated to a fever of hundred .100.5by 11:30 PM. As per my instructions from the oncologist I was told to go straight to the emergency room. I come to find out after being admitted my white blood cell count was all the way down to zero. Yes I said zero. I could not believe that. Since Friday I have been here in the hospital trying to rebuild my white blood cell count back. I had felt fine all week and had no symptoms until the evening when igota fever and no appetite. My white blood cell count was only coming back up slowly. It's slowly trickling each night so I am waiting to possibly go home tomorrow. They did not find any causeor infection from the white blood count being so low. So I am left to believe it was just a fluke as the doctor said or it could happen again. I am very thankful I recognized the signs of me feeling a little off balance and just went straight to the emergency room. They are sticking with the chemo still on Friday. My mass has almost completely gone down as its barely palpable anymore. So I am very thankful for that. I just thought I will let you all know in case you're wondering where I was. I had so many antibiotics over the past few days and had red man syndrome which I absolutely hated which was a side effect from one of the antibiotics. So hopefully I'll have a good rest the week after my discharge tomorrow.

Tracy,
Did you get the Neulasta shot? So sorry you had such horrible side effects and ended up in the hospital. Hope you get to go home tomorrow. Ask them about the Neulasta shot after your next chemo treatment. It helps keep you wbc up. Keep us posted.

Hi Tracy- The same thing happened to me all the way through chemo. I went to the nospital the first time it happened to me and the rest of the time I would lock myself away from everyone in my house for a few days. My wbc dropped to zero also in spite of getting the neulasta shot.

I don't understand how this happened. You think it was because I work myself too hard around the seventh day when my white blood count was supposed to be at the lowest? I was feeling fine and I was moving furniture and I didn't feel like anything was wrong. So I don't know what caused it. They never found an infection or anything that cost white blood count drop to zero.

Tracy,
You did nothing wrong. Chemo is some strong stuff and it affects everyone differently. They may lower the dose next time to try to prevent this from happening again.

Also how will I know how many lymph nodes are affected?. Will I to have to wait until I have my surgery done after chemo? Before chemoI had an MRI with the dye that showed no lymph nodes affected but they said that doesn't mean there is no cancer there so I was just curious how will I know how many nodes they will take out and what the overall prognosis is going to be? I noticed as of today my lump is not palpable anymore which I'm very very very happy about. Thanks in advance.

Donna they are going to say at the same dosage see if it happens again. If so, space they are going to reduce the dosage next the following time. The oncologist said he sees this all the time and sometimes it could be just a fluke other times it could happen all the time so he's going to stay the same goes for this time which I hope it doesn't happen again. I think I'm going to just take it easy around the seventh day and hide myself from room for a day or so

Tracy,
Before the surgery they'll inject a dye into the tumor to see where it drains. Then they'll remove the sentinel lymph nodes that are identified by the dye. They'll examine the nodes to see if they have any cancer cells in them. Good news that your tumor is no longer palpable! The chemo is working.

Dear Tracy,
I am so sorry you had to experience this. Maybe you could leave the strenuous work for a later day and just seclude yourself and rest. I have seen this scenario at the clinic where I volunteer. They just want you to allow your body to recover and not be around a lot of germs during this delicate time in your treatment. Good luck and keep us posted. YOU CAN DO THIS, WE ARE HERE TO HELP IN ANY WAY POSSIBLE..... WE ARE YOUR 'CHEER LEADERS'.... Rah! Rah! Rah!
Love and God Bless,

Hi Tracy, I just had a thought. What about Juicing? A friend of mine sent me an email about it, and when I did it (I added all kinds of healthy things like spinach, carrots, apple, pineapple, Greek yogurt, Silk milk, etc.) for 2 of my 4 ACs my numbers came back good. If nothing else it's good for you. If you're interested it might be something to ask your doctor about. Linda

I bought a nutri bullet and juiced alll the week after the chemo. I had everything from spinach to carrots, to pineapple, to blueberries and everything else I read that is good for cancer fighting.
That still didn't help. IMO I think the stress did it. I am under a lot personal and family stress right now with other members in my family that are sick right now also and I have 5 y/o that is like a germ factory. I am a sanitizer freak after eating every meal. I am just going to take it easy. I am going to start my clariton tomorrow. The nurse said 2 2ays before and go till 2 days after the chemo. I think I start the day of last time. So maybe that will help also.
I was also in the nutrition store today and ask the clerk how to boost your WBC and he said wheat greass so I had a wheat grass smoothie tonight. He has a grandson with lymphoma and get chemo and he said it helps him a lot.
I am going to show to the RN tomorrow to ask and make sure I can take it.
I just sat in the mirror tonight and cried some b/cause I know in less than a week all my hair will be gone. None of it has start evening coming out yet but I hear your getting close when your scalp starts to itch.

I also read litearature that said if you get a lumpectomy you are still more at risk for a local reoccurence but my dr said it was the saime no matter what you get mastectomy or lumpectomy. can anyone clarify? If thats the case I might as well just had the mastectomy already. I am going through chemo before in hopes to shrink it enough to save my breast but whats the point if there is still is a greater chance of local and then I would be forced into mastectomy. I guess its's too late now. I hate now knowing how many nodes are affected since my surgery won't be until after. Will they do any more mri or dye scans in between the first chemo and last. Before i started I had 0 nodes they could see on the mri but that doesnt mean there is residual cancer. Honestly I am still just overwhelmed. Even before bed tonight. I had a nice smoothie with spinach, carrots, bluberrries and mixed frozen fruit with my super boost powder that came with the machine.

Tracy,
Look back a few entries on the thread. I think Donna left you a message about tests before surgery and a link.
I think, not sure, what i've read is that survival is about the same whether lumpectomy or mastectomy...i don't remember reading your chance of recurrence was worse with a lumpectomy. Someone will correct me if i'm wrong.
Although i didn't have chemo first the goal with doing it that way is mostly to see if your tumor is responding to that/those particular drugs.
Crying is okay...i hated losing my hair so bad i never even cut it...i was a real chicken. It will grow back sooner than you think. I had my last chemo in October(2009) and by December it was about 1/2 to 1/4 inch long. You'll have brand new "virgin" hair.
Please do something to relax yourself even if you can't sleep. Soft music, warn bath, valium if needed..YOU are most important right now.
We're here for you,
Blair
