I saw this post on 'Inspire' and thought TNBCers taking bisphosphonates should know this:

Hello to ALL,

I saw my dentist yesterday for my 6 month check up and raised a lot of questions regarding ONJ.

It is a fear I have being on Zometa.

She is the first person to tell me this info. and I wanted to pass it on to you all. I had not heard of it before....

There is a serum blood test they can check to see what your risk would be to develop ONJ.

It is called the CTX Serum test.(c-terminal cross linking telepeptide) value.

So, if you are in need of any dental work etc...
You can have this level checked and it will tell you at what risk you are to develop ONJ. (osteonecrotic jaw).

values lower than 100pg/ml high risk to develop ONJ.

values between 100-150 pg/ml moderate risk

values above 150 pg/ml minimal or no risk.

normal values 400pg/ml.

Thanks Denise. This is very timely for us. Onty will be getting Zometa from Monday as a part of the clinical trial SWOG 0307. By the way her onco indicated that the risk of ONJ is 0.5% with bisphosphonates and this is mostly observed in people who need to have dental extractions.

After seeing your post, I googled this compound and found at least one mid sized study that confirms this.

It is good to know that if DW develops any dental issues that need extraction there is a test that can help evaluate the risk.
