Topic: Vitamin D may lower BC Risk Posted: Jul 06 2008 at 9:10am |
http://www.breastcancer.org/risk/new_research/20080516b.jsp
I was reading this page today and you know those numbers are scary to put out to people, they are to me.
Sometimes I wish I hadn't seen information or atleast see it after they had made a decision or conclusion that something works.
I suppose in this line of work for lack of better words there is hardly ever an answer, just we will have to do more studies so don't take this to heart. Some of these researchers/scientists agree/disagree so no one gets anywhere.
Also there still seems to be in my reading confusion on whether it helps trip negs.
I do understand healthy is good.
Sorry, I guess I'm frustrated today. I don't want to stop learning about new things but I wish they wouldn't go in circles or curves as they sometimes call them.

Hi Pam,
This reminds me of the beta-carotene studies they were doing in the early nineties they thought that it was the answer to curring cancer... 10 years later they said that was not so much...
When I talked about it with my onc he said that almost everyone with cancer has low levels of vit. d... and in Seattle most people he says almost eveyone has low levels of vit d... He told me to start with 1000 per day and he would check my levels in September when I return from Paris...
Don't get yourself frustrated...
Have a great Sunday,
Beth Anne

Hey Pam,
I saw this on breast cancer.org many months ago and much of what is written sounds like old thinking, which unfortunately found on many sites in cyber-space. It's hard to decipher what to believe but things are changing and many doctors are recognizing and fixing this epedemic. In my opinion, we survivors can't afford to be deficient.
Regardless of if we are talking about breast cancer or not, vitamin D deficiency is deadly serious and needs to be addressed. I have yet to meet a single person with or without breast cancer who was not deficient or seriously insufficient, this is from people I have talked to all over the country.
This deficiency would also explain the epidemic of not just cancers, but other serious diseases that have been blamed on the environment and food. Not that those issues are not important, it's just if our body isn't able to defend itself everything we're exposed to becomes serious.
I can tell you that since I started taking suppements in 5/07, I have had only one cold...that's it. My digestion and immune system work. I was sick all the time before the whole breast cancer ordeal. In fact I refused chemo until I got healthy because I really felt it would kill me. After taking D for three days I could tell I had found the problem. I sailed through chemo without hospitalizations from infection, but still had the hairloss, mouth sores, a bit of stomache, I just healed up very quickly.
I know my D levels dropped during chemo because I was being tested at every blood draw. I was taking between 4000 to 7000 IUS per day during this time.
Vitamin D is not like other vitamins, it is produced in huge quantities by the skin when exposed to the sun (when given the chance). Some foods have it, but our bodies are way more efficient at making it because we're supposed to have lots of it. It's not like other vitamins which are extracted from food sources, vitamin D is produced by the body and is really more like a hormone utilized by many different systems. Rather than speculate on what ailment the deficiency is causing, get your levels up and be amazed at what heals itself.
This is mainstream medicine and it's serious. Get your levels up and be amazed at how well things work!!!
Feeling Great on the D

When I started seeing the articles on Vit. D and cancer, I started wondering if this was becoming "the vitamin hype of the year", until I had my last consult with my oncologist. He actually brought up the issue with Vit. D with me, and gave me the "this is important" look when he wrote up the blood test request for me. During the year prior to my diagnosis, I was pretty much trapped indoors. Very little exposure to sunlight (despite living in Southern California!). I didn't eat well (I get away with it because I'm very thin). Didn't take any supplements.... Coincidence? Maybe. But I hate cancer, and I'll add anything that sounds reasonable to my artillery list:
Exercise Healthy Foods Chinese Medicine (I'm Chinese, btw.) Supplements (Vit. D is now added to this) and some California sunshine!

Hi defeatbc,
I was talking to my daughter Lori today and of course she knew that her Dad and I were taking D. (Per my gyn saying that I must take it, 1000 iu's per day, and hubby with some heart issues).
However, from what Lori said, it should be D3. I have bought 8 bottles of just D, and do not have the receipt to take them back. Called my gyn to have her fax the order for D levels when I have my bloodwork, (it wasn't on the order). Asked about the difference, and she said that when my bloodwork comes back we will see. However, she was not concerned that it was not D3.
We need to ask Ronda........................HEY RONDA!!!!
Doesn't it just amaze you that Ronda was screaming the benefits of D for months now, and our dr's just caught up with her? Perhaps there is a spy among us
What Chinese medicines are you taking?
Hugs,
Nancy

Hi Nancy. I took these two Chinese Herbs prior to chemo, and plan to resume them after I'm done with chemo: 1. Scutellaria barbata (Chinese name: Ban Zhi Lian) 2. Oldenlandia diffusa (Chinese name: Bai Hua She She Cao) My mother who is a 12 year bc survivor, took them to prevent recurrence after she completed chemo. So far so good! (She said she was never on any targeted therapy, so I'm assuming she was also Tri-neg). Come to think of it, the herb I listed first is going through an FDA approved clinical trial under the name BZL101 as it's been shown to cause cell death in cancer cells without harming normal cells. Here's the trial info: http://www.bionovo.com/home.php?menu=clinicalprograms&submenu=BZL101 Isn't it just awful how long it takes for the research community to take herbal medicines seriously. My mother knew about these more than a decade ago only because my grandfather was a specialist in Chinese medicine. Other herbs I'll consider adding to my post chemo treatment: Phellinus linteus, and Ganoderma lucidum.... hmmm.... I think I should start a thread on Chinese Herbs. If Ronda is the Vitamin D guru, then perhaps, I can be the Chinese herb guru? Going back to the Vit. D discussion. The funny thing is that Mother is telling me to eat lots of mushrooms (culinary types!) to combat cancer. She doesn't know why. Just eat them, she says! Well, I have a feeling it's because they are potentially rich in Vitamin D. -- defeatbc

Hi Again defeatbc,
There are so many natural things on the face of the earth, and to use only the ones which harm every cell in your body seems totally foreign to a healthy lifestyle. My gyn is really into both Western and Eastern medicines.
When you live in Altoona,PA, it is a bit difficult to acquire Chinese herbs. Would have to get them on the internet. When I look at the American Indian and the natural remedies they had/have, and yet the American public knows nothing of them and the healing powers they possess.
Thousands of years of proven remedies from the Chinese...and we kill ourselves with chemicals. I know that some of the chemos are derived from plants and I know that they work. However, the harm they do can possibly kill you down the road.
Oh Well, enough of my ranting,
thank you dear...I will print out this page,
Hugs,
Nancy

Hi All,
When I was going through treatment I was working with an acupuncturist too. I took a Chinese herbal formula called Chemo Support. I got my oncologist's okay. She was amazed at how at would rebound after each treatment. She now refers patients who are interested to my acupuncturist.
I now work in the same building as my acupuncturist. We also have a naturapath, massage therapist and others in the healing field. It's a great environment. I get to hear all of their conversations. The magazines are good too!
Warmly,
Sadie

Defeatbc, mushrooms have beta glucans in them which have shown to cause cell death and prevent metastasis in mice. I take maitake, which was in a phase II trial at Memorial Sloan Kettering a couple of years ago. Beta glucan is also found in yeast, and there are a couple of trials using yeast beta glucans in cancer treatment going on now.
BTW, phillinus linteus is a medicinal mushroom, not an herb.

Hi Gals, Yes Nancy D3 is what you want to take it is more highly absorbable.
I live in Portland Oregon and there is a Chinese medicine school here. The naturopath that I worked with during chemo also worked at the school. She said they had radiologist attending the lectures because they couldn't believe how well the rad patients were doing using chinese medicine.
I think the veil is lifting between western and easten medicine, Until we we have integrative care we will continue to treat symptoms and not underlying causes. We have to be our own advocates and the docs will eventually follow suite once they see how many of us are thriving.
Considering how cheap vitamin D3 is, you'd think we'd have all been on it long ago. On 20/20 the other night they had a segment on vitamins . THE ONLY VITAMIN THAT ACTUALLY PROVED VITAL WAS D, they said save your money on the rest, except D3 and a multiple.
Prior to being diagnosed with BC I was a vitamin junkie, because I didn't feel well no matter what I took. I haven't taken anything lately including D because I'm going out in the sun. Food allerigies are gone, IBS is gone, headaches are gone, no flu, dark circles are gone, and I've had only one cold and that was after flying and eating lots of crap at the young survival conference.
News about this started as a whisper and now it is a drum beat. Don't forget to tell your family members to get tested, it's better to fix it before cancer or lupus or ms or diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis or crohns disease sets in. Young children are at risk too and they think some of the behavoiral problems we're seeing in sooooo many kids could be linked to this as well. It's important to get tested, so cough up the cash and get you numbers. I think it would be great if we had a bunch of baselines before supplementing, then we can track how long it's taking to get levels up and also how we feel as levels start to increase.
Lets all get healthy and put big pharma and the supplement industry out of business!!!!
All the best,
Ronda

Hey Krisa, Where in Portland do you live??? I was thinking about maybe getting someone of us together for Susan G. Komen.
Your welcome about the vitamin thing, I do it because so many parts of the country don't offer integrative care, and I want to make sure it gets on the radar screen. Western and Eastern/Nutritonal medicine need to come together to help us survive our cancer and our cancer treatment. I'm just a gal who has read alot, but if I were queen of the forest I"d make sure everyone had integrative care.

Ronda,
Just had my blood work done today. While I am not the one dx with bc, I will give you my levels. How long does the blood work usally take? They said they send it away? Ok. This is Altoona, Pa. Lori sees the onc this week, and will ask for her levels to be checked. Our # 2 daughter bought the vitamin D3 today. She will get her levels checked when she sees her doc.
