I had a double mastectomy on 3/4/13. Just finished chemo yesterday! Now onto the next step. My plastic surgeon and radiologist are telling me that I can have reconstruction surgery then radiation OR I can do radiation then reconstruction surgery. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on which way is better? Or what their drs have recommended?
Thanks

I completed Chemo on June 7 and had the bilateral mastectomy on July 11.  At tumor conference the Radiology Oncologist was firm that I NOT have any reconstruction prior to Radiation.  That he wanted a clear field to work with so as to kill any hiding remnants of abnormal cells. (Pathology showed full response to chemo).  Reconstruction is not recommended to me until at least 6 months for my tissue to heal.

I hear many times that having reconstruction first can possibly result in infection or the scarring from radiation can mess up the reconstruction.  I can't verify that.

I am waiting and start radiation within the next week or so.

Good luck.
