Hi everyone - (Im new here)
I am 44 & finished treatment 12/2011 - I was diagnosied w/ Stage 3B Inflammatory breast cancer/Triple negative in March 2011
I will be having my fist follow up since completing treatment and just wondering what to expect or ask for as far as test go - I do have a CT scan (pelvis,ab,chest) scheduled & blood work for next week - should I also be asking for a PET or bone scan to be done?
I have heard so many different stories & of couse terrified something will be missed & end up where I started.

Hi Ruth,

As others chime in you will find that doctors have different approaches to follow-up testing. My doctor does a lot of blood tests(from some cancer markers to vitamin D levels) at every appointment but he doesn't do regular scans. He only orders scans if you have symptoms. He doesn't like to have his patients exposed to high levels of radiation unnecessarily.

Best,

Natalia

I'm finishing my rads on Thursday, and the only tests I will have, other than routine blood work, is a mammogram every six months.  My oncologist, like Natalia's, doesn't order scans and other tests unless there's problems.  At first I was freaked out by this, but the closer I get to the end of treatment, the more at peace I am.  I am confident that my cancer is gone, and am expecting to live a long, long time!!

Hi Ruth,

Follow-up care seems to vary pretty widely by doctor. As scary as it seems, the standard of care calls for only routine blood work and mammograms. It sounds like you are already getting more than that though!

Good luck with the scans!
