There is 1 week now my mum has a pain in her back(lower back pain).
She wants to ask you if any of you have or had persistent pain where is your lower back, where is spine.
She's wondering if that pain has something to do with her osteopenia or maybe is osteoarthritis.
She will visit her oncologist these days because there is 1 week now she has the pain and she is thinking if a bone scan is needed. She is afraid and i'm afraid also...every pain is an added stress....

Dear Tasoula,

I have been having right lower back, hip and thigh pain for about 3 weeks now. I mentioned it to my onc at my follow-up this past Monday, and am awaiting an appointment for a bone scan as per her recommendation, and she wants to see me in one month instead of three months for follow-up. At first I was blown away at the term "bone scan" and not very happy at all, but as the pain has continued, now I just want the scan so I can find out what the pain is and move ahead with treatment to relieve it. I also have the fear and stress of "what if it is cancer", and hope it is just arthritis or something age-related, but am so very glad to have a pro-active onc who wastes no time to diagnose a problem when it occurs.
I will be praying for your mother that her situation is also age-related and not cancer.

Love and Peace,
Sue

Dear Sue,

I will be praying for you also.....
I think this pain is coming from arthritis and from the cold weather....
If my mum's pain continues she will be having a bone scan also....
I was thinking that maybe is from osteopenia? Did you ever had a DEXA scan?

Dear Sue and Tasoula's Mom,

I'm praying that the pain both of you have in your back, spine, hips and otherwise is nothing associated with cancer. There are so many other causes for this type of pain that are more easily accepted.

God Bless,
Lillie

Thank you Lillie and Denise for your support....
She's in so much pain and just worry about her........
I have talk with her onco and she's having now pills and topical cream and tomorrow we will go to see him...He says that probably tha pain is like lumbago so it needs time.If continues he will order an MRI.
He says that because she has a lot of pain is not something

Tasoula,

Thank you for the prayers.  I did just have a Dexascan a few weeks ago which showed minimal thinning bones, nothing out of the ordinary for my age. Hope your mum is resting and healing.

Dear Tasoula,

Your mom's pain is probably something else... she had recent scans and they were fine. I won't tell you not to worry because we all do; with every pain and ache. But, for what it's worth I recently experienced lower back pain myself. I had pain in my lower back for almost three weeks and to make things worse while touching my back to find out where the pain was I also found a little soft, non painful, movable lump in that area towards the right side of my spine. Of course I thought the worse; I'm a TNBC survivor, why wouldn't I? I gave it a couple of weeks and thought about all the other explanations (without taking the other one our of my head); it could've been that my 3 year old had slept for several nights in a row with me in my bed, or that my desk and chair at the office are not in the best ergonomic position or even that I pulled a muscle while exercising. My dad is an orthopedist and he insisted that I went to see one so he practically made the appointment himself.

I went to the doctor a couple of weeks ago and the truth is that by then (5 weeks after it started) the pain was almost gone. He told me that the lump I felt was just fat (yeyyyy for fat! ) and after examining me he determined it was probably a pulled muscle. He didn't even ordered any tests as the pain was almost gone (now it is gone). He was very nice and really heard what I was telling me and told me he understood my concerns, especially as a TNBC survivor. He told me it was OK to worry and that I could go back at any moment if I felt any other concern . I had a PET back in June that was clean so I guess that helped too. In any event, this is my story. Maybe if I'd had gone to see the doctor earlier it would've spared me some sleepless nights. Have you considered seeing a specialist in back pain? If your oncologist believes it could be lumbago then that may be the best route to follow.

My pain got much better after I took anti-inflamatories everyday for a few days (that was before I saw the doctor as my dad prescribed me) I don't know if your mom has tried it but this may help. My doctor also mentioned that when my back bothers me I shouldn't do any kind of back stretching or any activity that strains that area in any way. He also said to massage the area with some ice covered by a towel. Maybe that can help too.

I hope your mom feels better and I will be sending good energy your way.

Best,

Natalia

Thank you Natalia for the reply....

We will go today to see her oncologist and my mum insists to see an orthopedist-rheumatologist.
Did you see an orthopedist doctor? Did he prescribed you an anti-inflamatory  gel and pills for back pain?
There is now 10 days she's having the pain and i believe also is a muscle or arthirtis.
She is having anti-inflammatory pills and gel.
She is thinking that maybe is from the weight bearing exercise she's having...
I will keep you posted when coming back from doctor....
Thank you and all the best to all of you!!

Thank you Sue.....how are you feeling? Are you taking any pills for your back pain?
I believe also that the pain is age related or any pulled muscle....
Do you do any kind of exercise?

I'm praying for you...

Hi Tasoula,

Thank you for your prayers.  Hope your mum is better today. I have been taking Advil which helps sometimes but not other times, but the pain is not as bad to my inner thigh right now, so I am hoping that was just a strain from work. I was working in a repetitive motion, physical job. Have since changed work to a less physical job with less repetitive motion. Now I have pain mostly in my lower right back/buttock and right outer knee/calf that comes and goes every few minutes or so and is not completely relieved with Advil or change in position. Still waiting for the call to schedule bone scan and ready to have it done and move past this pain.

Love and Peace,
Sue

Hi Tasoula,

Positive thoughts that your Mum's visit goes well today.

When the oncologist clears your Mum from an oncology point of view, sounds like your mum is
planning to see an orthopedist/rheumatologist.
Are you considering asking the MD for a physical therapy referral?
That is the name of the physical therapist that gets the best results for people with back pain?
Maybe friends or relatives might also know a great physical therapist.
If your Mum decides to see a physical therapist, try to get the name of the best physical therapists
in your area.....the right one can make all the difference in the world.

With positive and caring thoughts,

Grateful for today.....................Judy

I think that your mom had scans recently and they were ned that is a great thing that is what mkes me think this is osteopenia or arthritis related which can be very painful. Denise, we went to oncologist and he recommended pills and gel for her back pain and if in a week is not gone then he will order an MRI.He believes is just a back pain(lumbago), nothing more!! She had a PET in August so we believe is nothing else there.
Now she started feeling better but the pain is still there(not so intense), so it started to recess.
As for the osteopenia the oncologist prescribed Zometa and as soon as she is feeling better she will have Zometa.Lets pray everything goes well..........
She's hesitating to take Zometa and she's not sure for having it but the doctor insists because he believes in its anticancer activity and in the prevention of osteoporosis........
The thing is now Christmas is coming and if having it next week and after having any side effcts from it, it will be very pity too loose good time......
It is from May she had the DEXA which showed osteopenia and oncologist worries that maybe it progress to osteoporosis so he recommends as soon as she feels better to have it.....

Hi Tasoula,

Is good to hear that your mom is feeling better and hopefully her pain will go away soon. I've been taking Zometa for the last couple of years; my oncologist ordered 6 doses (once every six months). I had a bone scan a couple of year ago and it showed a little osteopenia which was really border line. However, due to my age and the fact that I will have to have my ovaries removed soon as I am BRCA1+ which increases my risk for osteoporosis he wanted me to have the Zometa. The only side effect I've experienced so far was some pain in my bones after the first treatment. The nurses told me to take a couple of Advils the night before treatment and I have not experienced any pain in any of the other 4 treatments I've had. You can ask around here for the side effects that others have experienced. One important thing to do is to have the dentist check your mom out and do so every six months to make sure her teeth are ok as osteonecrosis of the jaw is a dangerous side effect that although remotely, does happen to people taking Zometa.

Best,

Natalia

Thank you Natalia and i wish you always all the best to you!!

Did you ahd a DEXA before you started Zometa to see if you had osteopenia so to check afterwords what benefit you have gained from Zometa?

I had a bone density test in August 2009. My oncologist will do another one at the end of the Zometa treatment (which be August 2012). He doesn't like scans or exposing patients to any unwanted radiation and since my osteopenia case is borderline he is not very concerned at this point. He also thinks that beyond helping the bones it should also help prevent recurrence despite the recent results of the studies showing that Zometa apparently is not that helpful for premenopausal women like me. He once told me he had studied the way it works and the results of various studies and he thought it could help anyways and since I've had no issues with it so far he wants me to finish the treatment.

Best,

Natalia

Natalia, my mum's oncologist also believes for Zometa's anticancer activity so she will proceed with this.
The thing that makes me worry is one of its side effects of renal toxicity.
Her system now is very good, her blood tests shows that everything is excellent ands she's afraid that zometa might cause any problem with its toxicity.
How many times per year do you have blood tests?

Posted By: nmunoz
Date Posted: Dec 08 2011 at 1:41pm
I am seeing my oncologist twice a year now (he moved me up to every six months last June) and every time he sees me he orders a bunch of tests including full metabolic panel, vitamin D levels, cancer markers, etc. I also get bloodwork done a week before I have the Zometa infusions and one of the things they look for is renal function. This past year I saw the oncologist 3 times and had two Zometa infusions so I had blood tests 5 times. So far everything is normal.

One thing the nurses also tell me is to drink lots of fluids the day of the infusion (before, during and after). May be this helps the kidneys too.

Best,

Natalia

Exercise is the ideal solution for all kinds of back pain. Few months ago, I was suffering from lower back pain. My doctor suggested me to do some back exercise. I am now free from all pains. Few popular back exercises are Child's Pose, Cat/Cow, Downward Facing Dog, Standing Forward Bend, Sphinx Pose, Knees to Chest With Slow Rock, Reclined Pigeon Pose, Reclined Supine Twist.
