Deborah,

I saw Caryn post on FB that she's not doing too well.  She's on a lot of morphine right now.  I couldn't figure out from her post if she's doing chemo or not.  I haven't seen her post in over a week.  Please keep her in your prayers.

I got this message from Caryn:

I've been in and out of the hospital. My port closed and I had a blood borne infection. Things are not looking good. I'm told that there is no saving me. I't's crazy but that "parp" really messed me up. I'm going to try some light abraxane starting next week and I need to check the brain again. Please thank everyone for caring. Somehow I thought I'd be one of the lucky ones and be around for awhile. Doc says I'm not ready for hospice at all but I just hang out in my my bed most of the time.

I believe Caryn is comforted by all of our prayers and well wishes.  Just knowing that others care about her will help lift her spirits and keep her fighting this terrible disease.  I was lucky enough to meet her in Houston at MDA.  Like others I've met, I wish the meeting lasted longer.  Caryn is truly a wonderful person and the love she has for her son is so apparent.  They have a very close bond.

Caryn,  if you read these posts I hope you know how much we all care and love you.

Hugs,

Donna

Sad news...I hope she pulls through she is such a strong person.  I agree Autumn...this makes me so angry that a cure has not been found.  Cells are killing friends and loved ones at record pace and the top minds in the scientific and medical fields can not figure out how to stop them.  I am just so angry...this is not fair.

Thank you everyone.  It's been hard to write.   Between the hospitalizations and the decisions ....  I start Abraxane tomorrow.  Truly I don't know why.  I've been told by 2 of the best IBC docs that I am going to die no matter what.  Not what one wants to hear.

Anyone been on Abraxane?  I've heard it can be mild.  I want mild.

Donna thank you for starting this thread an thank you everyone who has cared to post.  You are all lovely and I am grateful for you.

Caryn -   With all of the arms you have holding you up, and with all of the prayers, and strength we are sending you - I just refuse, simply refuse, to believe it will not have a positive effect for you.  I too have heard the abraxane can be "gentle."  I am praying it treats you gently and that it works miracles.  We are with you every step of the way and you are never out of our thoughts or our hearts.

Caryn, you always in my thoughts and I send you much love....

Remember, vitamin D and curcumin make taxanes (taxol, taxotere, abraxane) work even better; but No resveratrol while being treated with any taxanes.

If you get a chance, please check the Edge CAM and Edges' Evidence Watch for guidance.  For example, I have copied his treatise on Reishi, which is specific to IBC, but the whole CAM regimen is very researched and has additional info which you might want to avail yourself.

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) Mushroom Extract [for IBC only]
  • Michaela Hoffmeyer at the University of Texas and colleagues recently tested the hypothesis that the immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer effects of  the traditional Chinese medicinal (TCM) agent  Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) mushroom extract, may be effective against IBC progression and invasion, given accumulating evidence of its ability to inhibit proliferation, adhesion, migration, and invasion of cancer cells via the  triterpenes component which exhibits cytotoxicity against cancer cells at high concentrations, and component polysaccharides that are  immunostimulatory. The Reishi extract effectively inhibited proliferation of the IBC cell line, reducing  cell-cell attachments and decreasing invasion of IBC cells.  Reishi also down-regulated 52% of tumorigenesis genes in the IBC cells treated, and furthermore inhibited the MMP-2  and MMP-9 levels; this suggests that Reishi inhibits IBC progression via cell proliferation reduction, prevention of tumor emboli formation, and inhibition of invasion by reduced matrix MMP levels. So Reishi extract appears to be a natural agent with potential inhibition of IBC progression. (See http://ibcwatch.evidencewatch.com/ - IBC Watch ).
  • Optimal Formulation:
NSI Reishi Mushroom Extract is one optimally standardized (10% polysaccharides) product, delivering 50mg of  standardized component per capsules.
  • Optimal Dosing:
The  goal would be  100mg active component daily, so dose at two capsules daily, preferably on an empty or near-empty stomach.
http://nosurrenderbreastcancerhelp.org/page93/page92/page92.html

This next link is for reading up on optimized studies regarding chemo state of the art dosing and other info, but I am pretty sure your doctor is on top of this:

Bliss

Hi Caryn,
Great warmth and gentle vibes headed your way.

I had 4 Abaxane treatments and found them to be much easier to tolerate than the AC.  I even went as far as to call me chemo nurse after the second treatment to make sure they'd actually given me the drug; I felt that good.  I hope your experience is the same.

You and your wonderful son are in my thoughts and prayers.

Caryn,

Many hugs and prayers for you my friend.  I did 9 rounds of Abraxane (did 3 taxol first and it caused severe neuropathy).  I sailed thru Abraxane with almost no problems.  The first dose caused a pretty bad headache and stomach pains, but it only lasted 2 days and it never happened again.  Abraxane actually takes longer to prepare by the pharmacist then it does to infuse.  Infusion is about 30 mins...it looks like soapy, dish water...strange.  I would have my labs drawn, wait an hour while they mixed it and infusion took 30 mins.  I found it to be very "doable" and no where as harsh as adriamycin, cytoxan, taxol or taxotere.  My hair even began to grow back during it (I had adriamycin/ctoxan before the abraxane).  My oncologist sings the praises of Abraxane and it has put me into NED...I pray the same for you.

much love,
mary ellen

Caryn,

This stupid cancer is really cr*p.  I can't believe all you've gone through and to have more brain lesions.  I'm so glad you are able to tolerate the Abraxane.  I hope it kicks it quickly and you see some improvement.

Hugs,
Donna

Caryn, I'm so glad the Abraxane is no problem for you.  That's fantastic.  As for the brain, oh man, what disappointing news.  But the good news is that the mets you already zapped are gone, right?   So you can do the same thing, gamma knife, on the new ones and they should disappear too.   We love you.

My wonderful friends you will hear from me soon.  I hope everyone is doing the best they can and not feeling too badly.

I love you all,

Just a lap top computer tip for those of us with demon mouse pads that cause us to lose our hard worked posts: you can disable your mouse pad by pressing the FN key at the same time as you press the F8 key.  It is temporary and to re-enable, just press the same keys again. I have lost so much work because of this mouse pad issue.

Bliss,

Thanks for the tip!  I can't tell you how many times the darn mousepad has erased what I wrote after a lengthy reply.  Now can you tell me where the FN key is located?  Is it the same as the "Ctrl or Control" key?  I can't find it on my keyboard, lol.

Hi Donna--the FN key is usually below the shift key....it might be nested on some models of lap tops. Basically it is a function addition key for the F1 through F10 keys at the top of the keyboard.  Type in your help menu for mouse pad control and it might tell you where it is nested.....let me know whether this works for you.  If I don't disable my touch pad, every time I type the letter Y, my cursor goes on it's own little journey--absolutely maddening Angry!  I use a regular mouse instead of the touch pad too.
Hugs,
Bliss

Dear Caryn,
Are you taking any supplements while on Abraxane?  Depending on the chemo regimen, certain supplements can make chemo work more efficiently.  For example, combining curcumin and pathenolide (feverfew) has been shown to prevent brain mets, both micro and macro.  Combining ECGC (green tea) and curcumin had a synergistic effect on tumor suppression; it was anti angiogenic on multiple pathways.  There are many helpful suggestions on the Edge CAM...his suggestions are predicated on a very high standard of proof.  Of course, no resveratrol while on taxol.
Most importantly, I have copied a paragraph from the Edge CAM regarding IBC.  I think he has several targeted suggestions for IBC, and they are worth considering.  Here is one of them:
(End Copy)

Always thinking of you.
Hugs,
Bliss

Caryn, I didn't realize you had decided to enter hospice.  This makes me sad, but I can't help but feel hopeful as well.  Based on how upbeat you sound in your FB posts, I'm thinking this might be a great way to have a lot of quality time.  I'm hoping the brain mets will stabilize on their own and you will have years.  People do get kicked off of hospice, and I won't be surprised if it happens to you.

I love you, and so treasure getting to meet face to face and spend some time together over the winter break.

hi everyone,

thank you all for the kind words.

i am feeling much more lucid, etc.  i decided to go off hospice and try a low dose of zeloda.  i was on a very powerful steroid that was in my hydration and i went off it cold turkey.  little did i know . . .i was supposed to take 2 weeks and come off slowly.   that mixed with radiation was not good.

so i'll be back in game so wish me luck!

xoxo
C.
