Let's hear some survivor stories!!!! I'm so sick of hearing TNBC usually comes back within 2 years. Yeah, well last time I checked the people saying that weren't God. Let's hear how many years you are past diagnosis and how you are doing!!!!!

If I'm still here in 5 more years, then perhaps I may begin to consider myself a "survivor." I really hate that word - for any of us. I didn't even like it prior to being diagnosed! My stats are below - I just get really antsy - kind of like I'm afraid of jinxing myself. With this horrible triple negative - can we really ever feel safe?????? Was diagnosed 2/23/09 had first surgery March 23, 2009 and reexcision for DCIS in two margins April 8, 2009 - so I guess that would be the date I was deemed "cancer free." I am just so happy to feel pretty good today and to still be here! I pray it continues!

I agree. Everyone is wonderful on this site, but it seems so many are having recurrances that it is rather disheartening and depressing. And those that do have recurrances should tell us and be able to share and get encouragement and prayers. But it would be nice to hear some more positive stories also.

I'd love to hear from those folks also! I'm one of those awfull two year recurrencies that Tabatha00 hates to hear about, but other than my cancer I'm healthy. I'm hopeful that my PET scan on the 29th will show the radiation worked on my mets.

I am 2 months out and I am claiming no recurrances. Stay strong and fight ladies!!!!! I walked the stairs during lunch today and ate a salad. I do all I can do that's all I 'really' can do.
By the way I had a DMX on 9/23/10, my first chemo treatment on 10/21/10, and now I am back at work feeling good! I plan on walking this afternoon when I get home.

Hi Ladies,
I am coming up on 3 years from DX and I was stage 3 /3A .. ...I had the lump removed and had chemo and radiation...I just had a check up last week and everything is great...I am feeling good except for arthritis in my knees , and I can live with that :) I know it is hard to not be scared all the time and that is something my husband does not understand and I don't know how you get over that...I guess just with time...I still worry everytime I don't feel well or have a pain somewhere....
My dr did tell me that even though it is an agressive cancer that does not mean that we can't cure it...so hang in there it does keep getting easier ...Hope I helped a little

I feel like I've posted often that you must get tired of it but with this heading must say it again......will be 10 years this January ! Stats below. They didn't know what TN was when I was dx. I only knew what I wasn't. This was also before dose dense and they were only giving half the chemo that most of you get now. So no port. No decadron, no benadryl etc. SN was just starting so 13 nodes were removed. Surgeon felt better to remove more and be safe than sorry. It was considered lucky that I was readily given Zofran. I didn't meet anyone with my dx, negative for everything until 2007.
Good luck to all of you.

I have to jump on this "band wagon". On November 15th it will be 4 years since my last treatment. I am so thankful for every day and it does get easier the more time that passes. I am not naive enough to think it could never come back, but I'm headed to the zone where I feel safer. I wish that for all of you.

Since many of you ask to hear from long-timers, I will repeat myself as well, as I've posted here before. I was 9 years out in Oct. I'm Doing good. No recurrences. I did have a couple biopsies in the summer, first the needle biopsy, which still left some uncertainty, so I asked for the excisional biopsy. The changes that had showed up on my mammogram from the previous year were near the scar where I'd had my lumpectomy in 2001, and were identified as scarring from biopsies, surgery, radiation, & stuff. Having had so much work in that area, it is so hard & my surgeon said it may always be that way. He also said he has several patients like me, long-timers, who have abnormal mammograms that continue & biopsies have to repeated again. I gave you all those details in the event it might be helpful to you down the road. However, I'm good today, thankful, blessed, and I'm praying healthy, long-time days ahead for you.
God Bless,
Lorene

I was dx right out of the gate with TNBC-MET at age 29 and postive for the Brac 1 gene, that was three years ago, I have official been in "remission/ned" for the last year even though my scans during my 2nd round of Abraxane showed no sign of disease. I was blessed that I got on Abraxane and had no side effects with my young age they where able to push the envelope with higher dosages of the Chemo. Know I make trips every 3 months to get scans and blood work.

I am getting antsy because my 6 month follow up is next week. I'm sure it'll all be fine. Until I hit the 5 year mark, I think I will continue to worry. Its just part of the new normal. See my stats, I am over 2 years out.

I am a five year survivor! My stats are below. A couple of things to keep in mind, first, there was not testing for HER2 many years ago, so many who are long term survivors are assumed to be triple negative from their other statistics. Secondly, many long term survivors do not frequent these kinds of boards, they have either moved on, or don't even know these boards exist because they were not a part of their journey.

Hello old and new friends,
We will be three years since diagnosis come June 2011. Becky started a no salt, no sugar, no dairy, and lean meats diet about five months ago. I thought it was better to join her than fight her and went on it too. Becky has since lost over 30 pounds and I have lost 35. She also goes to the local cancer center in Seattle and exercises.
Today Becky was offered a job and she believes because of her new lifestyle she will have the energy to go back to work. Becky's last check-up her oncologist's nurse noticed Becky's big loss since her last treatment three months ago, over 10% of her body weight.
Becky is feeling great, and that is one reason I have not been around much because I have been spending most of my time with her. Never forgetting my friends here, I thought I'd say hello.
These are great stories, very uplifting. In case anyone wants to know the diet is called, "The Paleco Diet". For us it is not a diet but a lifestyle. I am looking forward to Thanksgiving, because it is the day we are allowing to skip the diet and celebrate.
God bless you all!
Dave

Sharon,
Happy Birthday and Happy over FIVE YEARS!! Birthdays are so much more precious after what we`ve been through.
Dave,
Congrats to you & Becky on your change to a healthier lifestyle! I also set out to be healthier post tx by losing 28 lbs by eating better and exercising when I feel up to it. I read the book Eat to Live and it helped me lose the last 10 lbs. Eating massive amounts of veggies & fruits while limiting dairy and animal products (I was a pescatarian already) has made such a difference. We must do what we can to stay healthy and you are a great husband to join your DW. My husband is eating beans for the first time in his life LOL.
Snuglz, that is an amazing statement by your Dr. My sx says staying lean is VERY important for survival too.

Hi snugltz, very interesting to hear that (about losing weight)! Through hard work and low-fat eating, I've lost 75+ pounds...and my oncologist got very upset with me, told me to stop losing. I think he is worried that the loss indicates something bad, although I explained how hard I've been working to get healthier. THANKS so much for sharing that, it's made me feel much better!

Hi Ghostie,
Very impressive weight loss! Good for you. My oncologist doesn't want me to work on my diet/weight loss until I'm done with treatment, but it seems to me it should be a good thing and helpful for my overall prognosis. You are a role model!

Hi there,
I was diagnosed in May of 2006 at age 45 and so am almost at the 5 year mark with no recurrance. Tumor was large at 3.2cm, grade 3, triple neg but all 22 nodes removed were negative for spread. Had mastectomy followed by FEC chemo, no rads. Fear of recurrance still there but settling down to a dull throb. In the beginning my onc emphatically stated that I "would be fine" which of course I knew wasn't foreseeable but man did I appreciate that woman's positive attitude. I cannot believe some of the stories on here that speak of the "other" kind of doctors. Not what we need when faced with such a life altering diagnosis.

Dear Eltonswife,
You and I are very close in our diagnoses dates. June 2006 for me. My oncologist was very sort of emphatic that I would be fine also. That kind of positive attitude does help you get through the days.
I know they cannot know for sure, but it helped my state of mind.

I know I was not in my best health before treatment, so I tried to look at it as a "Reboot" sequence and an opportunity to emerge on the other side healthier. When you think about it, by the time we've lost our hair and all our cells have been napalmed, it's a little like being a baby again with a cleaned-out system!

I was diagnosed 6/06 so I'm 4.5 years out. My surgeon considers me "cured", my onco is not quite as positive but will consider me ned. I had a bilateral mastectomy and 4 rounds of ac. I don't know my BRCA status but as that this disease killed both my mother and her mother at very young ages I've always assumed I'm positive (we are Ashkanzie Jews as well). I also had a complete hysterectomy in 07, just in case. My cancer was only stage 1 (1cm) no nodes but ki67 of 54 and grade 3/3. My gyno found the lump during a routine exam (it never did show on a mamo) and my surgeon swears that my gyno saved my life. I was 46 at diagnoses. My mother was 36 at diagnosis and we think that her mother was even younger. Chemo was brutal but it sure beats the alternative.
------------- Dx June 06 stage 1 at age 46, no nodes, clean margins, Ki-67 at 54, Bilateral Mastectomy, 4 rounds AC, complete hysterectomy Aug O7. Mother and Grandmother both died of breast cancer dx in their 30's.

Eltonswife,
I had 6 treatments 3 weeks apart like you. My onc told me they usually do only 4 txs, but did 2 extra due to the triple neg. Yes, there aren`t many in the U.S who still get FEC, I`ve noticed mostly in Europe & Canada (like you). When I questioned my onc why I didn`t get a Taxane, he said the FEC was a powerful chemo that he believed does a good job on TN. I hope he`s right!! I donm`t know about you but it kicked MY butt! And I am a strong woman.
Susanb,
Thankyou for sharing your story. I`m so sorry for the losses of your Mom & Grandmother. I hope you are indeed "cured" and live to a ripe old age.

I must agree, the FEC Chemo really knocked me on my butt too. I've never been hospitalized, had surgery or any serious illness before my diagnosis. I considered myself very healthy and strong. Isn't it amazing what we can do to ourselves and still bounce back after?!

Dear Connie and other TNBC sisters,
I do hang our here on the boards hoping to offer hope to women just being diagnosed, in treatment, or just finishing treatment. Just read my signature and see that my cancer was stage IIb, 1 positive node, triple negative; not the best scenario, but I decided to fight. I did not have reconstruction and don't plan to. I would add that my oncologists recommends that none of us should rush the reconstruction process. He recommends finishing all surgeries and treatments and a time of healing before begining reconstruction. Just some food for thought.
God Bless,
Lillie

I am over 2 years out from dx, my onc says first 2 years after chemo ends are the most risky. So my next milestone is March 2011. Then my onc visits drop to once every 6 months. Just had a clear MRI. My husband and I have booked a trip to Paris in May and I'm so hoping to go on that trip (we bought travel insurance though, just in case). I feel great, just super, but still follow this board on a daily basis because I empathize with all who are here and know that in a heartbeat I could be fighting again too.
One upside to my bc experience: I recently spent an entire weekend trying to fly out to Calif to visit family, from our snow-bound Minneapolis airport. Yes, it was a hassle, but all I could do was sit there and think how lucky am I to be alive and sitting here in this airport. And yes, my daughter and I finally made it out and had a wonderful (shortened) trip.
Best to All, Alison

Alison good news on that clear MRI!
I've been seeing pics of the football stadium up there filled with snow, the workers working hard to clear it out all week on the news!
I have been snowed in after 3 blizzards in a row waiting to get out of town, sure do understand that frustration, glad you were finally able to get out of there!
The Paris trip sounds wonderful, something exciting to look forward to, enjoy planning and getting ready for that trip.

I am now 4 years from my surgery...I count it like that because I feel they removed the cancer then :) As you can see from my signature I was stage 3 with lumpnode involvment so I feel so soooooooooooo lucky to be here today to post this. I have been fine and have a mammogram and checkup coming up next week. The chemo did take a toll on my body...I am 57 and most days feel more like 67 with arthritis in both knees and have still not lost the 15 pounds I gained with the steriods they gave me during treatments but I am alive and was able to see my only child(daughter) get married last fall...I hope this gives some of you out there just starting so hope and to know that this is not a death sentence...you can make it thru and survive ...God Bless you all and thank God that I am here 4 years later.

Hello Becca,
Thank you so much for your post. Congratulation on 4 years.
Would you please post what chemo you were given. My SIL Faye will begin chemo tomorrow or Thursday. She is Stage III?, Grade 3 and had 11 positive lymph nodes. A PET scan, and MRI last week showed that there was no spread to other organs.
I would like to print a copy of your post to give to her. Yours is such a positive story that I feel it would help Faye to see it.

I just want to share that I have made it to the 2 year mark, having just had a mammogram, ultrasound, and breast MRI that all showed NED. My oncologist says that even making it this far is a positive sign. The biggest change for me since my diagnosis is that I have truly learned to "find the beauty in the every day" like Steve says. Even when bad things happen, I try to remind myself that I am still here to experience them and that it might have been otherwise. This site has helped me in many ways, and I pray for everyone here, especially those dealing with a recurrence. Have a great weekend everyone!
