"Turning Heads: Portraits of Grace, Inspiration, and Possibilities." by Jackson Hunsicker...
I have read several posts, here, recently about losing one's hair, wigs etc.
My daughter had absolutely gorgeous thick hair when she was dx with breast cancer. After understanding that her chemo regimen would cause her to lose her hair she made a decision to cut it all off and buy a wig.
Watching the hair stylist shave my daughter's hair off was perhaps one of the most difficult moments we experienced together. Turned out that she often did not wear her wig because it made her feel very hot...she became pre-menopausal from her chemo and really suffered from hot flashes.
In any event I spoke at a Young Survivor's Coalition event at my friend's spa and he had a copy of this book. I gave it to my daughter and I think it made her more comfortable when she didn't wear her wig...To be honest, most of the time she went wigless was in her house but nevertheless that was, at times, difficult for her to do. I told her that she was beautiful before losing her hair and she was beautiful without hair and she was.
What shines through many of these pictures to me is the intelligence, strength and beauty of these women...There is a look, in some of them, that says "yes, my hair is gone but I am still here and I will be here...my hair will grow back and my dignity is still intact and shall be."
I hope this book helps some of you, newly diagnosed, and, about to go through chemo or already on this stressful journey.
all the best,
Steve
