I had a lumpectomy in October of 2007 and am undergoing chemotherapy which will then be followed up with 33 radiation treatments over 6 1/2 weeks so reading all these are encouraging!  Thanks ladies for posting.  I have a friend of mine, Karin, whose husband had last year a double mastectomy.  His reoccurred; however, and he underwent surgery two weeks ago.  He will now have to have chemotherapy and radiation as well.

April must be a great month!  Terri and Dori's birthday is today.  My daughter  and my Dad's birthday is the 8th, and my birthday is the 14th!

My daughter was even named after my Dad, and he was the first to see her after she was born -- I had a C-Section, and he drove like a bat out of h*ll 40 miles to get to the hospital -- he came in and stopped 2 nurses trying to find out where I might be, and one of the nurses said to him, "well, this is her baby."  So he got to see Corrie first!  My Dad died of lung cancer in 1996.  He was in his 70s.  One of the things that he regretted was the fact that he wasn't going to see my grandson's (his great grandson's) first birthday.  He died November 17, and my grandson's birthday is December 11.  He adored Matthew.  In fact, he had a picture of him in his little baseball suit right next to the side of his hospital bed so he could see him all the time.  He always told me that that picture brought him so much joy.  Matthew was such an adorable baby, and he had (and still has) a smile that can make butter melt!

Anyway -- back on a happier note -- happy birthday you too, and I wish you both MANY, MANY healthy years!

Sunris -- I just now read your posting, and boy, do I remember being where you are two years ago.... sitting here now with my hair back and my energy and my perspective,  I can only tell you that you will be sitting in my chair at the end of your treatment down the road...and you will be looking back at the treatment summer.... and distance will make it easier to deal with...
~~I just came back to my office following my first meeting with researchers at the University of MN.  I am officially part of a small pilot study of post-menopausal breast cancer survivors here looking at how weight loss affects the chemistry of cancer recurrence/or your chances for recurrence vis-a-vis inflammation levels in the body and amnt of melatonin.
I will be in either one of two groups:  A) weekly one hour consultations with a health coach for 14 weeks or B) Meals prepared for us daily (we eat only these) and wkly meeting with fitness trainer to meet weekly goals in the gym (gym membership provided)...and  three each:  bone density tests, blood draws, and 24-hr urine collections thruout the course of the study....fitness evaluations...ALL FREE... and bound to lower BMIs for those of us who gained weight after breast cancer treatment...  and need to find our exercise habit again...
~~ Day at a time, day at a time, Sunris -- you will be done soon... Dori

Awww, Dori, I was hoping you would be in group two so we would hear about the kind of food the University thought was helpful.  For you, though, maybe it is better to be in group one with the more sustainable program.  After all, the University is only doing the cooking for a short time.

Maybe the University would be willing to share their menus later so we can see what they consider healthy?

Suzanne, yeah I know.....I really didn't have a clear preference for either group.  Logistically having to go get the food every day after work from the University and then additionally get over there for the mtngs with the personal trainer would have been a challenge [even for my flexible work schedule]-- but the lovely discipline would've been nice... on the other hand, my group will be getting detailed food program and exercise plans from which to choose -- and weekly consults/weigh ins (sounds like some of the commercial programs out there) -- so I will certainly share the food plans, etc and also try to get a summary of the Group B menus for food provided.
Am anxious to start all this, now that nice weather has come to Minnesota and lighter clothing is in order...am hoping my ONC md sees the improvements with me in September...   Dori

A lumpectomy may be considered a partial mastectomy because a portion of the breast is actually removed. Unlike a mastectomy, however, this is usually a rather small piece. For this reason, it is sometimes called a "breast conservation" or "breast preservation" surgery. It is indicated for both men and women to remove discrete lumps from the breast tissue, whether benign or not. http://doctorfinders.com/doctor.php?Provider=sclottich - indianapolis surgical oncologist

I greet you to the TNBC Forum with mixed emotions:

1.  I am happy that you did find us because these ladies and gentlemen on this site have a wealth of information and strength to pass on!

2.  I am sad you HAD to come find us -- that means you have been diagnosed a triple negative breast cancer patient.

Anyway -- ask away and share whatever thoughts or questions you have.  There is a lot of support, encouragement, love, and answers here!

I had two benign tumors removed from each breast. A lot depends on your pain level and attitude as to how you will react to the surgery. I also had a radical lumpectomy for a cancerous tumor in 2000 and I am doing great. If you have never had surgery, you will go to the hospital, they'll check you in, have you put on a gown and the latest way is that you sit in a lounge chair and they hook you up to monitors for your blood pressure and such. They will give you a twilight drug to make you calm and groogy. You should be able to have a relative or friend sit with you during this time. When it's time they will wheel you in and put you on the table with your arms outstretched and taped down. Then they will inject your anethsia drug into your IV and when you are under they will put a breathing tube down your throat. Someone is constantly by your side who's only job is to ensure that you are breathing ok and that your vitals are functioning. You won't even realize how much time has passed since you were in the chair and when you wake up. You will go to a recovery room and as soon as you wake up your friend or relative will be there. It is scary but you will come through and when it is over you will look back on it and even have some laughs. Just lean on your friends and relative. You'll be all right. I'm a 7 year survivor.
