Good morning ladies,
I am in need of some advice. My mother was first diagnosed with TNBC two years ago. She was placed in full remission in Dec. of 2018. Four months later, her cancer has returned in her lower spine and surrounding lymph nodes. She is 55 years old. My parents live in TN. My hubby and I live six hours away, so I don't get to help her as much as I would like. Of course her cancer is classified as stage 4 now. This has been such a shock to everyone. My mother is the "glue" of our family. I just don't know what we would all do without her. Anyway, she is seeing the same oncologist she used before and I just can't help but feel that this physician missed some things. Does anyone know of an oncologist who can really treat TNBC that is a reasonable driving distance from Tennessee? Also, how can my brother and I support our mother during this time? We just aren't sure what to do or even what to say. Any advice would be much appreciated. I have one child and am expecting another. She loves being with her grandson, but I can also see such sadness in her eyes when he is around. I'm not sure if having the grandchild around makes things better or not. Thanks for your help on this topic.

Dr. Ingrid Mayer at Vanderbilt is considered the TNBC specialist in the Nashville area.
I'm in Nashville, but I have chosen a different oncologist even though I am stage 4. I think it's a matter of choosing the right person for her. Steve (sagepatientadvocates) is also helpful for getting appointments with the right people.

Thank you so much! I'll pass that along. She is currently seeking treatment in Knoxville so Vandy is close.

I see Dr Mayer at Vanderbilt. I started seeing her in 2012 for follow-up after my first TN diagnosis. She also treated me this last year for a second TN primary tumor. I like her a lot.

We drive from North Carolina to see her since we used to live there and are familiar with the area. I think  a consultation with her would be worth it even if she can't handle the travel.

My mom had late stage 3 ovarian cancer in 2011. She responded well to treatment and surgery and is alive and well. One of her great fears was that her youngest grandchild would not remember her. So, while your Mom is sad I can't help but think she loves every minute she gets to spend with your children.

Thank you so much for your response, Blair! I told mom about Dr. Mayer and her primary oncologist said he would refer her anywhere she wanted to go. I feel this will be the best option for her at this point. Her cancer returned in four months. I really appreciate the recommendations. I didn't know where to turn, but this forum has been very helpful.
