Hi Everyone...I am brand new to this site having stumbled upon it while trying to research if I should discontinue treatment. I was diagnosed in September 2013 with both DCIS (er,pr+) and IDC (triple negative stage 3A). I had a mastectomy with reconstruction in October and began chemo in December. I completed four rounds of AC with the usual side effects, but managed well. Taxol has been kicking my ass, however. I have received two out of the four treatments and have ended up in the hospital a week after treatment both times. The first hospitalization was for Sepsis and C-Diff and the second was for Pancreatitis and required me to have my gallbladder removed (acalculous cholycysitits sp??). I am very fearful about continuing treatment for the remaining two taxols. Has anyone had such severe reactions? Anyone choose to stop treatment? I am a mess trying to figure this out and need help.

I'm sorry you are having such a tough time with Taxol. Are you getting it every 2 or 3 weeks? You could ask about maybe getting it weekly to see if the smaller dose would be better tolerated? There are other taxanes you might ask about too, like Abraxane. I didn't have Taxol, but Taxotere. Hopefully others will stop by and share their experience.

I was supposed to receive dose dense treatment every two weeks, but with the hospitalizations I had a month break between round 1 and round 2 and it looks like it will be a month break as well between round 2 and round 3. I don't know if I can take any more risks with this drug. May look into alternative therapies.

Hi: the new standard with Taxol is to give it once per week, over 12 weeks, rather than do the dose dense treatment. Breaking up the treatments over 12 weeks helps to reduce the side effects. What did you decide to do with your treatments? Hope that you are doing better.

Hi Powder,
I am so sorry you have had such a difficult time with Taxol. In 2006 I had 4 treatments every other week and did well.
Having 2 kinds of cancer, being stage 3a, mastectomy, reconstruction in the beginning is really difficult. Do you know what caused the sepsis, C-diff and pancreatic infections? I am not a medical person but with all the different diagnoses you had I would think you really need the taxol. Or maybe switch to taxatere or abraxane in a different treatment regimen.

Hi everyone. After my post I was switched to Abraxane. The pancreatitis was most likely caused by the Taxol so they didn't want to risk another exposure to either Taxol or Taxatere which has also had pancreatitis linked to it. The c-diff was due to prophylactic antibiotics given prior to a chemo treatment. My counts were 0.8 and they tried to keep me from getting sick. I just finished my chemo treatments and am getting ready for radiation in two weeks. Thanks so much. We have decided that when all is said and done that I will have another mastectomy on the other breast. Can't do this one again!! Thanks so much for all the help. Knowledge is power.
