Subject: Teary eyes

The last two weeks I have noticed my eyes are very watery. The corners are always teary. It starting to make my eyes puffy like I have been crying. I wake up in the morning and the corners are crusty like I was crying in my sleep. Has anyone experienced this during chemotherapy? Any suggestions?

Have you lost your eyelashes? Eyebrows? Nose hairs? I know i did and my eyes and nose were always "running"

I have found my eyes are puffy and a bit crusty. Also developed 2 styes that required rx to clear after tx #5. Just finished chemo (wed) and feel like I'm getting another stye ;(
I think eye problems are common, but make sure it doesn't develop into infection.

Julie,
It's a side effect from the chemo. Use a warm washcloths as a compress for your eyes. It does stop once you're done with chemo. If you have dry eye problems, try an eye drop like Systane Ultra.

I have my eye lashes still, I have not started taxol yet, that is tomorrow. I was reading to try moisture eye drops. Donna are the compresses for the stye issues? I would think this would make my eyes more puffy. I think I need to get some cucumbers. :)

watery eyes are a response from your tear ducts to counter dry eyes. Donna's suggestion of the Systane Ultra (which I use) helps greatly. Don't overuse it, but it's a good thing to keep the eyes moist and closer to their norm rather than wait for them to get teary and dry before using the Ultra. You can also try, as in 1x a week the Ultra ointment for overnight. It's very soothing, goopy ugh, but in the morning my eyes thank me.

I would use a warm washcloth on my eyes to help get the gunk or dried up stuff.

Hi Julie,
I was diagnosed with blepharitis while on chemo. I had several stye's and my eyes were matted almost shut in the mornings. Hopefully, yours are not that bad. My onc prescribed an antibacterial ointment (don't remember the name) and moisture drops to soothe my eyes. I also did what Donna suggested with a warm washcloth to remove the gunk in the mornings. After I finished the taxol it gradually went away.
I hope the information the sisters are posting eases any anxiety in your mind. It is just something that can happen while on chemo.

Geese, , the fun of chemo! Thank you for suggestions, my left eye is definitely acting up again. Will try warm compresses and moisture drops but that didn't help last time. Just seems to want to develop ino a stye, at least this is my last chemo. The pain below hips has been extremely bad, I was given morphine (low dose ) but it hasn't been any better than Tylenol extra strength. Hopefully one or two more days and Ill start feeling better, then I have my pre-assessment for surgery on Friday! Yeah that much closer to getting rid of cancer!

Your situation with the stye's sounds really familiar. I had 1 or 2 even after chemo ended. I had to use the prescription ointment for a while after treatment ended. For me, it was a bit stubborn to get completely cleared up. I still have a scar on my left eyelid where a huge stye hung-out for a while. Yes, the fun of chemo.

Not only do you have oil glands along your lashes, you also have them all over your eye lids. The warm moist compresses are the best for keeping all the glands in your eyes open and clear while your whole body including your eyes are being deluged in chemo. Taxol is what took out my eyelashes and nose hairs. I def had issues with runniness in both thru taxol. I also had a small bug fly up my nose and straight into my throat - I then coughed it up! My teenaged son witnessed it and said, huh. So that's what nose hair is for, to keep the bugs out. Lol!

Prevalence of excessive tearing in women with early breast cancer receiving adjuvant docetaxel-based chemotherapy
Journal of Clinical Oncology, 05/09/2013 Clinical ArticleChan A et al. – Tearing occurs in the majority of patients receiving adjuvant docetaxel-based chemotherapy regimens and occurred similarly in patients with and without LDO. There was poor concordance between CT-DCG and ophthalmic examination in the detection of LDO. Tearing and other eye symptoms impaired visual activities, but in nearly all patients, both symptoms and functional impairment were mild and had resolved by 4 months after chemotherapy. Our study demonstrates docetaxel-related tearing is not caused by LDO, and as such, evaluation or stenting of the duct is not considered necessary. Methods - Consecutive patients with early breast cancer recommended for docetaxel-based chemotherapy with no prior ocular symptoms were included.
- Before and after completion of chemotherapy, patients underwent lacrimal drainage evaluation by computed tomographic dacrocystography (CT-DCG) and ophthalmic assessment.
- Eye symptoms were assessed at baseline, during, and after completion of chemotherapy.
Results - Over a 22-month period, 100 patients were recruited.
- Asymptomatic LDO was present at baseline in 17% and 18% of patients, as assessed by ophthalmic review and CT-DCG, respectively.
- Overall, 86% of patients developed tearing, with no significant difference between those who did and did not have LDO (94% v 84%; P = .45).
- Blepharitis occurred in 37% and minor corneal epitheliopathy in 22% of patients, with neither condition predicting for the development of tearing.
- Impairment of visual activities was greatest after cycle one (70% of patients) but had decreased to < 5% by 4 months after treatment.
