In October 2012 I received 3 weeks of radiation for bone mets to my left 10th rib where it meets the spine. My pain (pain radiated to left side, left back and left lower abdomen) and bowel issues (caused by the nerve being damaged) went away as a result of the treatment but after 2 months of being pain free and having normal bowel function, the pain and bowel issues returned. My PET scan showed that the value of 4.8 (prior to radiation) was reduced to 2.7. My radiation oncologist says she believes I am having a latent inflammatory reaction as a result of my body trying to heal itself. She thinks the 3 monthly Xgeva shots that I received after radiation and my return to weight training activities at the gym may have caused further inflammation. I am seeing a pain management doctor because the pain and bowel issues are just as bad as they were prior to the radiation.   Has anyone else had this problem?

None of the pain medications or the treatments (intercostal nerve block at 10th rib and steroid injection) have relieved the pain or bowel issues.

Debbie,

Sorry to hear of your current pain and bowel issues.
Maybe some one who did not see this when it was first posted....will see it now and post.
The only things I can think of......
Has your oncologist/radiation oncologist re-evaluated your situation.
Is the pain management physician an oncologic pain management specialist.
Wondering if you posted in the mets/recurrence users forum if there might be some one with
a similar experience and would post.

Hoping you can get significant relief quickly.

With caring and good thoughts,
Grateful for today............Judy

Hi Judy,

Thanks for your reply; I re-posted in the mets/recurrence forum as you suggested. I am meeting with my radiation oncologist (who is the one who referred me to the pain mgt doctor) this week to further evaluate the situation.

Debbie
