Topic: New blood test for cancer Posted: Jan 03 2011 at 9:42am |
This is actually pretty big news as it can be used not just for initial dx but also to test if a chemo is working on existing tumors. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40881967/ns/health-cancer/

Thanks so much for this, Mainsailset! It made me very emotional in a positive way just thinking of the possibilities. As I go through my chemo I constantly wonder if it is working since it is adjuvent and not neoadjuvent.
You made my day!
With love and hugs,
Sue

Just curious how long will it take to be a generally available test? We need tests like these now!

Please let this be the smokin gun we have been waiting for! If we find the cells still there after our tx, then what? What meds are here for us? TN BRCA neg, etc....? Great to know, but would be better to have chemo to go with it.... Hugs, h.

Helen, Connie had mentioned to me that it has been in the works, and I believe I've seen some women here mention it, to continue with a chemo for up to a year after the original treatment has been completed (chemo, mast, radiation). This would certainly make sense for a TN and though it would be hard on us ladies, just might clean house on any remaining cells.

According to my onc, Mainy - that's exactly the problem. I asked about residual chemo after treatment, and while she understands my logic of wanting it, she said it's not done when all original treatment ends as it would wipe us out entirely. As she said, it is still a poison, and even to give a diluted maintenance type formula (which of course has no scientific backing at this point in time, so they'd not even consider it unless you in fact needed further treatment), would be too injurious to all the normal cells and your organs.
Perhaps someday they may have something such as a maintenance type "mop" - cause it sure makes sense to me.

Linda, well said. Reading your post I suddenly thought that with TN I've always referred to it as the Ebola (the deadly African virus) of bc as I consider TN "Hot" and that's why chemo works so well. We have an aggressive, hungry cancer that therefore needs nutrition and so when we apply a chemo which starves it, we see better results than the slower growing bc's.
That said, logic tells me that continuing chemo for ... say a month after last radiation would likely kill off the residuals because they grow so fast while not cause irreparable harm to us so maybe it's not just the diluting but a question of timing...could that be workable? Anyway, just thinking out loud on my keyboard.

I hear you, Mainy! and yes, yes, yes, now that you mention timing - she also said something about that - that there had to be a point in the cell's splitting cycle to administer the chemo, and with no known cancer active and splitting, this could not be achieved and would therefor just be poisoning our organs and killing of good necessary cells (or to that effect). I must ask her again, next time I see her.

I saw this clip on my local (Kansas City) news last night. Apparently much of the work on this new test is being done at University of Kansas Med Center. http://www.kmbc.com/video/26362551/detail.htmlAccording to this story, the test HAS been approved for the following types of cancer: - Breast
- Colo-rectal
- Prostate
They are still working on FDA approval for lung, kidney, head and neck, melanoma and other cancers. I'm really excited about this test and excited to hear that KU Med is close to gaining NCI status! That will be wonderful for our community.

Interesting correction. I have also found that this test initially was researched back in 2004 and did well then so it has already passed various layers of research with good outcomes.

I wish we could get a timeline on the mass production test.
