Hi ladies,
I have a friend who was just diagnosed with double neg, her her-2 is not back yet. The nurse kept giving her the jane doe numbers between lumpectomy vs. mas survival rates. I tried to tell this nurse that the numbers are different with double or trip neg and she kept on anyway like I was stupid. Could someone please send me the link or info on the trip neg research on this matter please. I would like it for her Doc and her so she can make an informed decsion with the correct info. Also is there a link for docs?
I want to make sure she has all the resources at her fingertips that can ensure her best outcome.
She is going to Mo. Bapt in St. Louis Mo. does anyone have info on how well they treat trip neg?
Here is what I have so far
age-45
mib-1  32
nottingham  8
2 tumors largest one is just less than 1 cen, but they may be bar belled

tumors are in the lower arm pit reg.
She is a dear friend and thou we share a lot, this is not something I wanted to share. I am worried sick for her and feel like I have been kicked in the stomache. I know she is overwhelmed right now and I am trying to not overwhelm her all at once, but she needs the info and so does her doc.

Tai,

Here is one link and I will search for the others. Are they doing the FISH testing for the HER2? That is the gold standard.
Hugs,
Nancy

Hi, Tai.

I don't think there is any evidence that survival is impacted by choice of mastectomy vs lumpectomy, even for TN's.  If anything, I'd expect the choice to matter even less for TNs, because we don't tend to recur locally.  Since her tumors are so small, a lumpectomy should be fine (so long as she isn't BRCA + or with many family members with early BC).

Sorry about your friend, but isn't she lucky to have you see her through the experience.

Love,
Denise

What about the brain mets when mas vs. lump is concerned?

I don't think it matters.  A fairly high percentage of women who develop metastatic disease will eventually develop brain mets, but most women do not go on to develop met disease.  Her tumors are small and nodes negative, right? So she is likely to be fine, with or without a mastectomy.  And if her disease happens to be the super super aggressive type that metastasizes even when tiny, having a mastectomy won't prevent that.  Basically, the cancer has either disseminated or not already, and is either chemically sensitive to chemo or not, already.  What is done to the breast doesn't really matter, so long as the margins are decent and she undergoes radiation if she chooses a lumpectomy.

There is a body of research that states lumpectomy plus radiation survival rate is the same as mastectomy. (Provided BRCA positivity is not factored into the equation).

The above study seems to indicate other reasons for the choice of lumpectomy versus mastectomy.
