Hi All,

My mother is undergoing six cycles of ACT regimen.She has finished five, however the last cycle has been delayed due to a low platelet count.(85000). The doctor has delayed chemo by a week to allow the platelet counts to rise. However he has not prescribed any medicine. Is this OK? Would the platelet counts rise on their own? Or are there any treatments to help it rise? I hope delaying the last cycle by a week does not have any negative effects.

Ram,

Having low blood counts is quite common from chemo.  Many of us have delays in treatment.  It just takes time for the body to recover.  If the platelet count is too low, some may receive a transfusion.  Hopefully your mother will be able to finish treatment next week.

Low platelets are  very dangerous  can cause internal bleeding. Platelets help in blood clotting process so when platelet count decreases doctor stops the chemo temporarily to avoid any complication. However in case of urgency , only after transfusion of platelets doctor can continue the chemotherapy.
