Topic: Hands Red & Dry from chemo? Posted: Apr 23 2014 at 2:57pm |

My hands are very red and I suppose dry, from the chemo. I guess the way I would describe it, is that they are so dry that it feels like a burn. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what did you do to combat it? I believe this is from the taxol. Thank you!

My arms got a rash on them and my skin was very dry. I wouldn't say it was painful but still something I wanted to address. My onc seemed pretty unconcerned so I started using a aloe gel on my arms and that seemed to soothe the rash and it pretty much disappeared.

This is also a common side effect of Xeloda. The advice given by many, including my oncologist and his nurse is to use a creamy emollient lotion such as Udder Cream, and especially to put plenty of it on at night before bedtime with some light cotton gloves so that it doesn't make a mess on the bedclothes. I just ordered a Hand Care kit from Burt Bees (off Amazon) because it has some good creams and the lightweight cotton gloves.

While on Taxol and Gemzar I had "chemo glow". It affected my face and hands mostly. I do remember my face being red to the point that I used no blush makeup. My hands were very red in the palm area. I do remember dryness also, but not a dryness that peels or sheds skin. Just a sense of absolute dryness which I treated with creams and moisturizers. It was a side affect of Taxol and maybe Gemzar.
Good luck girls. It goes away when treatment ends.
God Bless, Lillie

I didn't have a dryness feeling but on Taxol the bottoms of my feet and the palms of my hands got very red and sensitive to the tough (especially the feet), with the tissue swelling a bit. I couldn't even put my feet on the floor with out a burning sensation, when done with taxol skin shrunk back and I started peeling. the udder cream sounds like a good idea, or I used vaseline also.
