Topic: COVID-19 Vaccine & Immune System Posted: Jan 23 2021 at 11:35am |
Dear All Members, I haven't been on here in a while, but am still doing very well since my breast cancer in 2001, along with chemo and radiation. My question is about getting the COVID-vaccine and if my immune system would still be weakened after 19 years, along with my age. Has this question come up for anyone now that vaccines are being distributed? Being in the 75+ age group, I was called to set up my appointment for next week. I would appreciate any comments. Thank you, and I hope all are well in every way!
Blessings, Lorene

Hi Lorene, I’m not a medical person but my brother-in-law who is a double transplant patient and in his 70’s has been approved by his transplant team to receive it. He had his transplants about 3-4 years ago.

Thank you, cheeks. That's good to hear, I hope he does well! I'm still undecided and trying to learn as much as I can.

Hi Lorene,
I don’t feel like my immune system is weakened. It’s been almost 10 years since finishing treatment and all my bloodwork has been normal. I can’t wait until I’m able to get the vaccine. Based on the questionnaire of age and medical questions, I’m at the end in phase 3 availability. I hope I don’t have to wait too long for the vaccine to become available.

Lorene, If I could have mine tomorrow I would be there. I’m relying on my brother in law is the head of the infectious disease department in a large county in South Florida. He also worked for the CDC years ago. He has urged all of his family members to get it. I’m just going to trust him and his knowledge.
I hope you come to a decision that’s right for you.

Lorene:
I am currently in the middle of chemo and two medical oncologists have recommended that I get the vaccine as soon as it is available. I would check with your doctor.
Best.

Lorene, It is very doubtful your immune system is weakened from your cancer as it was in 2001. So if that is your only concern regarding the vaccine, I believe you are in the clear!
I recently finished chemo and rad therapy and my oncologist said absolutely get it. Her exact words were "the benefit out weigh the risk". I actually received my first dose this past Friday and feel fine! My final dose will actually be given while I'm on Xeloda next month. I'm happy to have had the opportunity.
Best of luck to you with your decision, be well.

Thank you All for your responses and your input. I've gotten word from my former Oncologist that he's recommending all his patients now on chemo and former patients get the vaccine! So, I'm planning my visit Thursday, Jan. 28. I will reply to each of you personally afterwards. Thank you again for helping me through this.
God Bless, Lorene

Lorene,
I'm so glad you are getting the vaccine. If I could get one tomorrow, I would. My state is last in vaccines with only administering 4% so far. I feel it will be a very long time before I can schedule a vaccine for me. Take care and let us know how it goes.

Lorene, I was dx in 2001 as well. I had the vaccine last Friday. Never did it come up in verbal or written screening about past cancer issues. Ive read quite a bit on the vaccine as well and nothing has indicated past tx or compromised immune system would interfere. I also had no side affects other than a tad of soreness at injection site.

All, Got my vaccine last Thursday with no side effects except a sore arm for a day at the point of injection. It sounds as though most, if not all, oncologists are recommending the vaccine and that it's needed even more for those with weakened immune systems. I don't think mine is weakened, however, after looking into this deeper. I understand the 2nd vaccine may have more side effects, flu-like.
Happy Health, Lorene
