QuoteReplyTopic: Severe Increase from Neulasta Injection Posted: Oct 01 2019 at 9:55pm
All the way through AC, I received Neulasta Injections. They were not fun side effects but they kept me on course to not miss any chemo days due to low WBCs. (Although, I did have one off week where my WBC was 1.1).
Onto Taxol regiment of single dose x 12. During my 2nd or 3rd, I had to be transfused. No Neulasta was given and was not really needed. My body was bringing up my red and white counts on its own.
5th Taxol, Doctor insists that I take a Neulasta shot. I didn't think I needed one. My WBCs were 7000 or 7.0. I took the shot to keep my therapy on schedule. The day after, I developed oral mucositis. 6 days later, I go in for another chemo (#6), my WBCs are now at 32.3 or 32,300 and rising. On top of that, my ALP has increased to 212.
Has anyone else experienced this high of a WBC increase with Neulasta? That is over a 25K increase.

Yes I did. I was given the Neulasta shot after AC. My WBC was 7.6 when I started AC in Oct. At my second infusion, it was 18.1, third infusion 21.6, fourth infusion-34.9! They cut the dose after that infusion and it was my final one. It started going down after that, and in January it was average 4.4, when I was getting Taxol.
I've never heard of giving the Neulasta injection when your WBC was in the normal range. The normal range is between 4 and 11 and you were right in the middle of that normal range. Usually women do not need it during Taxol, only during AC. I wonder why he wanted you to get the injection?

Honestly, I think it was them padding their Billings. They have me down for another and I will refuse. They are charging $15,065 for one injection.

Not only that Donna, she's on a WEEKLY Taxol regimen, she should've done Neupogen if she did anything. Both my MDA & UTSW docs explained to me last time that if I had a WBC issue this time it would have to be Neupogen because you cannot do Neulasta unless you have a 2 week or longer break between chemo treatments.

Good point! When I was on Carbo/Gemzar, my onc did one shot of Neupogen at the end to help with my counts. I was getting treatment weekly (2 on/1 off) so there wouldn't have been enough time for Neulasta.
Monarch,
So sorry you had to suffer through this shot when you didn't need it. Yes, it's super expensive. I couldn't believe the cost when I saw my EOB statements. How can anyone afford it if they don't have insurance? Glad you are questioning the necessity of it. Ask if there is any harm with these high levels caused from the Neulasta shot? Are there any long term effects or harm to you?
