Topic: taxol severe reaction Posted: Sep 17 2014 at 2:11pm |

On monday I attempted my second chemo treatment. My first treatment of Taxol was easy, no problems. However, on Monday no sooner had the meds start to drip I felt a warm sensation, I felt severe pain in my lower back, my face felt flush and I could not breathe. We waited an hour and tried it again. I immediately could not breathe. No back pain but we stopped it and did not try again. What gives? Will I be able to go on? Should I stop chemo and go directly to the surgery or radiation? Has this ever happened to anyone but they were able to bounce back to complete the treatments? I have six months of scheduled chemo. It was a scary expereince.

It's been a long time since I've heard of someone with a Taxol reaction, but they do happen and they're profoundly frightening. Two things occurred to me; one is that I'm sure by now the clinic's pharmacy has checked the lot stamp on the Taxol to be sure that it isn't one reported already as something that needs to be pulled...or that it is a different lot that your first successful infusion. I haven't seen anything on the Taxol reporting that there are bad lots out there but that may be simply a timing thing.
Second, people who have a bad reaction are often switched over to Abraxane which is similar but hasn't had the history of bad reactions. My sis was on the Abraxane and she breezed through the therapy with no side effects at all and it was very very successful in treating her bc.
It's rotten luck to have the surprise bad reaction and I'm sure you're probably still frazzled from having to go through that. Scary stuff indeed. Hopefully, the pharmacist at your doctor's office has a couple of great substitutions in mind that will work even better for you.
Good luck to you...and don't forget to breathe! Mainy

Hi there,
I am sorry to hear about that scary reaction. Maybe the dose was too strong? Did you receive the pre-meds before beginning the chemo? I can't imagine how I would react in that situation, but I would not want to continue with the Taxol if it were me. Fortunately there are many other chemo options available. I had carboplatin and gemzar and tolerated it very well and without hair loss.
I wish you better luck the next go around! Lisa

Dear ctysvb,
I am so sorry you had the reaction to the taxol. Usually, if a reaction is going to occur it is with the first infusion. I remember when I started taxol, a nurse sat by me and monitored my blood pressure, blood oxygen and breathing for most of the first infusion. I do know that it is a drug that is, or should be, monitored when first infused. Most likely you will go to another drug. Taxotere is one option, or abraxane that has already been mentioned. Good luck and God Bless. I'm sorry you got such a scare.
Love, Lillie

I had a neighbor who had a bad reaction to her 10th infusion of taxol where she was having difficulty breathing. I would just listen to your oncologist and do what he/she is suggesting........I would NOT do any more taxol.

Hi, I had this taxol reaction with the first infusion, I thought I was dying. Doctor wanted to try it again, with more dexa and lowering infusion rate I was able to finish 12 doses. I had too many side effects from taxol, it was horrible but now is done. I am on AC now, just one left and I feel like on hollidays!! no side effects good luck!

Hi,
Lillie had a good suggestion on taxotere if it is a drug that works well for you. I did real well with it. I ate good and had energy.
