Topic: Might be pregnant, on TAXOL freaking out Posted: Apr 11 2014 at 1:32pm |
My period has been fizzling out, and now the 5th month of Chemo it stopped. I immediately asked for a blood pregnancy test when I was there getting my weekly blood test. So yesterday I had the appointment with my Oncologist while hooked up to the taxol, and he said the test came back borderline, the hormones were kind of high. Yikes! He recommended a urine and then blood test again in a few days. then he came back and asked if I was still smoking Marijuana because it can elevate that hormone. Hmm good news? So I have to stop smoking and re-do the blood. So i already did the urine but no results yet and I am having a really hard time putting it out of my mind. I've been getting a lot of hot flashes too, so I am trying to tell myself it's just Chemopause, but they can also be a symptom of early pregnancy. So that doesn't help. Freaking Out! Thanks for listening =]

Dear CrunchyGirl,
I am a patient advocate working with women on a volunteer basis. I am not a doctor or medical professional and I am certainly not telling you that, if you are pregnant, that you should not terminate the pregnancy.
What I am suggesting is seeing an expert in PABC (Pregnancy Associated Breast Cancer); PABC is basically defined as breast cancer found while pregnant or within the first year of the child's birth.
Just as no two people are alike there are always exceptions in certain circumstances. I helped a woman several years ago who I believe was diagnosed in her seventh month of pregnancy and had chemotherapy and a bi-lateral mastectomy while pregnant. Mommy and child seem fine four years later.
It may be that a medical oncologist who is a PABC expert will tell you to terminate the pregnancy but perhaps not and you may feel so strongly that if you find out you are pregnant you terminate the pregnancy. The decision to see a PABC expert is, of course, yours.
I, for one, will respect your decision whatever it is.
good luck to you...
warmly,
Steve

Dear CrunchyGirl, I am so sorry that you are faced with such a serious dilemma at a time like this. I am assuming that you are Catholic. I am aware that birth control is not generally practiced by Catholics. My oncologist is Catholic. I have heard him advise patients to either abstain or use birth control while taking chemo. Having cancer, taking chemotherapy and having sex need to be viewed differently during this time in your life. Let us know how this works out for you and I will be praying for a good outcome to your problem.
God Bless, Lillie

Dear Crunchy Girl, Have you thought about seeking out a Roman Catholic Priest for Spiritual Direction on this very important subject. You may know one already perhaps or someone may be able to direct you to a Catholic Priest who can help with what you are dealing with. I will be praying for you. God Bless. Love, Annie
