Woooooo -Hoooooo awsome news!!!! Was just wondering how you and your mom were doing!!!!! You on your way... @ least you done with what I honestly believe was the hardest part of the Journey, all the tests, waiting to hear.... it's the worst!!! Now onto Chemo.... Good luck to your mom for Chemo, Can't imagine what it's like, but as I've read and have been told it's do-able, Chemo today is not what it was 10 years ago.... There is of medication to hlp with the side affects.... Exactly a year ago, my mom started Chemo.... Soon you'll be here! xxx God Bless Fats

This is terrific news!!! Now she can face the chemo with a positive attitude that she is preventing recurrence - makes it all a little easier to take! Tell her to ask the nurses in the chemo room about anything she is experiencing or doesn't understand - they are the best!!

My mom has already been to her "chemo prep class" and really isn't worried about any of it except being bald. LOL. She hadn't been eating well and had dropped 10+ lbs (she's already thin), but with the good news about the negative nodes she is feeling much better and putting the weight back on. I told her she needs to fatten up so her body will handle the chemo better. ;)

For all of you who know your BRCA status - did your insurance pay for the test? Mom's insurance is saying they won't pay for it and it's $3500 out of pocket. Just wondering.

Mine paid--I was 59 1/2. Current NCCN guidelines, I believe, recommend testing for anyone under age 60. Could your mother try to pursue it from this angle, I wonder. Charlene

My insurance paid..........I was 59 at diagnosis and 60 when they did the test. (Just this past May) Did your Mom go to a genetic counselor? I know I had to and I believe if they recommended the test then it was covered. Since I am high deductible I would have had to pay for the cost up to my deductible and then copay (20% ) but since I was already over the out-of-pocket max it was completely paid for. The Genetic Counselor had set it up with me that if the cost to me was going to be more than $350 that I would be contacted and had to give the go ahead for the test and they would tell me the cost. Good luck with getting the test covered. I had to convince my onc to recommend the test as he didn't feel I needed it originally. (Which is why I did not have it until nearing the end of my treatment). I found out on this board about the recommendation by the NCCN and demanded that I go to a genetic counselor. Personally I would have paid for the test if I had to because I needed peace of mind for my kids and grandkids.

Hi Kelly.... Good advice going out to you.... Isn't this forumn the best? Wouldn't worry about your mom's weight.... With the Streriods they give during treatment.... My mom picked up a few kilo's, she'll have cravings... and she'll have a good appetite.. Always used to tease my mom, she was like a pregnant woman! She's since lost the weight she picked up through Chemo, and her apetite is back to normal!
Keep us posted, hope you manage to get your brca test covered! Here in South Africa, things are done differently, so can't offer any advice!
God Bless Fats

Thanks ladies! The oncologist is saying since she's triple negative that they should be able to get the BRCA treating paid for. Mom would probably do it anyways for me and her sisters, but through insurance would be much better! She should know something next week when she meets with the oncologist.

Wow, your Mum's story is my story, just mine is a year later. Same size tumour, grade, stage, etc. Had lumpectomy, but am to be sent for gene testing & then I will opt for double mastectomy. Start chemo on Tue, but the surgeon who did the biopsy, told me right from the start it was on the cards 'cos of my age (40 in a month's time) & the grade of the tumour, & then it was Trip Neg (well I have a 3/8 response on Oestrogen, but 0/8 on Progesterone & HER2)... So glad it all turned out well for your Mum.

Hope they pay up for the testing. Here in the UK we're lucky enough to get it free on the NHS - I am queued up to go for the tests sometime soon. Also Trip Neg, Stage 1 (1.8cm), Grade 3, no nodes & start chemo on Tue (19th) so hope things are settling down for your Mum, & that chemo isn't too horrible. Going to be doing 3 x FEC & 3 x Taxotere, 3 weekly intervals & have a 16yo son, so have to put on a brave face, though God is good & I know He has my back, so not always too hard to smile a while!
Take care & God bless you & your Mum, she is lucky to have you (we were in SA until last Dec, then up to Zim, & finally back to UK, tho from Zim originally)

Hi Amanda,
How you doing? Hope you good, I see you've survived the worst, about this whole Journey! The Diagnosis, all other tests, the Staging, the treatment plan.... Now onto Chemo.... I can't Can't advise you on Chemo... as you've read above my mom went through the chemo, I was her main "caregiver" she did cmf, so the F and C are the same.... I was given this website...(Very helpful) www.macmillan.org.uk you can get info on your chemo regime.... s my mom had a lumpectomy, then did 6 months of Chemo, 12 infusions and the went onto 7 weeks of radiation! You'll find that most people have different treatments... every country has their own preferences.... We question everything, because so many others are doing different treatments, one should have faith in their team, that they doing what's best for your case! Good Luck for tomorrow, it's all going to be ok.... You've definetly come to the right place, for help and support... There is some amazing ladies and gentlemen on here that wll advise you where they can! YOU going to be fine!!! GOD BLESS.... Fats PS.... where in SA were you? and how long? I was born here.... love love SA!!!!

Hello everyone! I thought I had replied to this more recently, but I don't see it anywhere. Mom is done with her A/C protocol and it was rough on her. Lots and lots of nausea and she has been in a few times for IV fluids, meds, and low blood sugar issues. She's tiny, so it doesn't take too many days of not eating for her sugar to get too low. She's still feeling pretty crappy and is suppose to start her T this Thursday, but is going to discuss a possible week delay with the doc if she is still feeling this bad by then. We will keep trucking along though.

Kelly, The good thing is Taxol should be a lot easier!! I too had lots of nausea with A/C but had none with Taxol. I am not tiny and did not have the fluid problems....sorry your Mom had to go through all that but hopefully she will do well on taxol. Good luck to you all and while it seems like forever when you are going through all this before you know it you'll be on the other end and then the next thing you'll be a year out and it starts to fade. :)

Thanks ladies! I am just praying that the Taxol will be easier like it's "suppose" to be. I will try to be better about popping in and updating!
