Hello good people,

My name is Udoka, male, 34yr old, married, 2 daughters. I live in Port Harcourt Nigeria.

My younger sister, Amarachi (29yrs/single), noticed a small lump on her left breast in September 2007 and had it removed at a local hospital. Tests after this diagnosed Fibro Adenoma which I researched and confirmed to be benign. Hence I thought she was in no danger. However, in March 2008, she called to tell me that a bigger lump had developed in the same breast, the lump must have been there for sometime but somehow she was unable to open up to me or anybody else early enough. Anyway, by the time I became aware, she already had a sizable lump on the breast. I took her to Port Harcourt University Teaching Hospital where they removed part of the lump and the diagnosis this time around was LOBULAR CARCINOMA IN A BACKGROUND OF FIBROCYSTIC DISEASE. The docs recomended Mastect. However, we were by now wary of Nigerian Doctors and Hospitals.

We made attempts at sending her to Germany but had probs procuring a visa for her. In October 2008 we sent her to India (Indraprastha Apollo Hospital Delhi, to be specific. He cancer was diagnosed Stage 3b, she had a sizable tumor and it had already spread to her lymph system. She went through six Chemo cycles. Pet Scan after the cycles showed over 80% remission. Her onc recommended mastectomy (even though the tumor had shrunk considerably). She's had the mast. and started complaining of pains on her right breast but the onc said the cancer had not gotten to the right breast.

Eventually she switched doctors and the new doctor diagnosed TNBC after a series of tests including MRI. She received 'carboplatin' and 'germcitabine' last thursday and will take this weekly for one month while the docs re-evaluate her and decide the best course for her.

She will be joining this forum shortly as I am trying to intorduce her to it. I am looking for all the help I can get for her. It is eating a big hole into my income but I am ready to do all that is required to try and save her life.

I thank all the wonderful women on this forum for their stories. It gives me hope that my sister's case has not gone beyond redemption yet.

Thank you all.

Regards,
Udoka.
Port Harcourt, Rivers State,
Nigeria.

Welcome to you and your sister. I know this is not exactly the club you want to join, but it is great to have the board to come to. All of the women and men here are great and have a lot of knowledge to pass on. I also had a radical bilateral mastectomy at 37 and I do not regret my decision. I just wanted them off and the cancer gone as much as it can be! Hang on and THANK GOODNESS your sister had you to stand by her and help during this time!

Sending Love from Alabama, USA

Dear Udoka,

welcome!!!!!!!

Thank you very much for writing us on behalf of your sister.

It is very important for everyone going through breast cancer/chemotherapy to have a support system. I am delighted Amarachi has you as her rock and please know that you both have us.

I am new to this site but I have found it filled with marvelous, bright, compassionate folks...

Please know that you both are in my prayers and I am sending you positive vibrations from Los Angeles..

all the best and welcome again,

Steve

Hello Udoka and a warm welcome to you.Smile

I look forward to meeting your sister and you both will be included in our prayers that you find the right path for your sister.  She is lucky to have a brother such as you and obviously you have educated yourself on TNBC.

Alot of what we read is sometimes disturbing but things are changing.
TNBC is a hot topic now in the research area and the studies and research have picked up quite a bit.

I wonder, she says she has pain in her other breast.  Has the doctor actually looked into this or is he just guessing.  I hear from many women that docs will say cancer doesn't hurt and that is false, it can hurt.

I look forward to hearing more from you and your sister when she decides to join up. She certainly has had a hard time of it.

Best wishes

Dear Steve,

Thank you for your kind words and prayers. My sister happens to be the last of four surviving siblings, not yet married and had just ended her National Youth Service after graduation from the University before this sickness came up. She had not yet started work and hence is in no position to help herself. Moreover, it is traditional African extended family system to be supportive in conditions such as this.

I never knew of forums such as this or I would have found it earlier. If I had found the forum earlier, the information I get might have assisted us to manage my sister's case differently and that may have increased the positive odds. All the same, I am happy I have found the forum.

Pam, thank you.
Biopsy and MRI recommended for my sister by the second onc showed no sign of malignancy on the right breast. Also, the bone scan and other tests (dont know them yet) conducted on her showed the cancer had not progressed to any major organ. However, she still have cancerous nodes, most of which came up after her mastect. Her second onc has gone on conference in United States and during my phone conversation with him, he promised to take up her case with her fellow doctors and seek for their opinion. He will determine the best course of treatment for her upon his return.

Once again, thank you all.

Hi,

I was just wondering, do you have assistance programs where your sister lives where she might qualify to help with the medical bills?

I hope she is doing well,

Pam,

Unfortunately there is no such program here in Nigeria. My sister never got a job before her illness started, she is now staying in India and is not eligible to look for a Job with the medical visa she is holding.

I work for a multinational here in Nigeria. My company has a medical insurance that covers me and my immediate family. Unfortunately, my sister does not qualify. So I have to foot the bill with another brother.

Just spoke with her this morning. She is upbeat, claims all her pains have disappeared and she is very hopeful.

By the way, there is this group in the United States, Alaska precisely. They are advertising some supplements (most are zeolite based) as cure for cancer. I am getting her some of the supplements and she claims they are helping her a lot. The problem with the supplements is that they are too expensive. they cost me some $2000/month. The name of the group is gethealthyagain. There website is www.gethealthyagain.com

Once again, thanks for your concern.

Kind regards,
Udoka.

Udoka,

I am happy to hear your sister sounds upbeat and is hopeful.  I can only imagine how happy you were to talk with her.

My goodness $2,000 is a huge chunk of money per month.  Please beware and research this company and any others who claim they have a cure.

There is no cure for breast cancer at this time.

Good luck to you and your sister and please keep us posted,

Udoka, welcome to the site!  I am sorry your sister has to deal with this disease, but it sounds like you have been a great help to her and will continue to support her through this challenge in her life.  My sister was diagnosed with TNBC in December, 2008, so I know to some degree how you feel, and understand your desire to find as much information and help for her as you can.  I think you will find this forum is a great source of information and support, and I hope you will visit and share often.  All my best wishes to you and your sister.

Pam,

Thanks for the advice and concern. I have ordered for the drugs twice now, they are shipped direct to India and she has been using them after clearance from her doctor. We are just trying to do all that can be done - you never know what will work. There is no harm as it is just supplements. But I am worried about the Zeolite element. I have read that zeolite may have some carcinogenic effects. any additional information on this will be highly appreciated.

Cebo,

Thanx. Seems we are in the same condition. I wish your sister well. We will do all we can for them.

Udoka

Hi Udoka,

Of course you will do all that you can to help your sister.

Yes there are several of us in this forum who have sisters with cancer and  we know how difficult it is to see a loved one having to deal with such a horrible disease.

Here are a couple of links about Zeolite, I'm not sure if they will help or not.

Please keep us updated on your sister, your  family will be in my prayers.
