Pam,
Don't know how you find these articles but love ya for doing so. My personal opinion..spend the $45 million on research for the cure. There are enough cancer foundations/societies getting the word out, and if people are not already aware, they have been living on another planet. Just look at the number of women joining this forum. Janet and I were discussing this very thing on the phone last night.
Hugs,
Nancy

This controversy is really interesting. I saw the congresswoman on TV last week and was impressed that she wants to push the use of resources for awareness and research. It sounds like a lot of the response hasn't been so well received.
The statement that the educational information used will come from those who should be most educated in the subject gave me more assurrance that guidance will be valid. Of course I'd like to see a good portion of this money used for research, but I also see the value of educating the public about the very real threat of death from BC.
Every time a movie star goes on TV and shrugs off the threat as if it's a simple problem that's now fixed and gone, it makes raising money for research much harder. Obviously there's a need for more education. I think there are many misconceptions related to BC. One is that BC is confined to the breasts and all the same kind, a lack of appreciation for the complexity of the problem. Another misconception is that when someone who has had BC that spread to the lung and subsequently died, that she died from lung cancer. Many don't understand that the killer is breast cancer.
Another big misconception that I think is actually promoted by surgeons has to do with reconstruction after mastectomy. It's so very oversimplified. The risks and even likelihood of problems seem to be seldom discussed during the decision making time.
I hope the awareness that comes from these funds is real and covers the negative aspects as well as positive. No one needs the "sugar coated" comments that leave invalid perceptions.
Those who find themselves charged with determining what should be covered in the information and education used, would do well to read a lot of the survivor blogs for a valid picture of the actual BC experience. These blogs include so much that isn't included in the perspective studies of the medical team.

I LOVE Debbie Wasserman Shultz but dang, I can't even get my own relatives who have a 50/50 chance of being BRCA+, to educate themselves on the risks!
Don't ya love how the automatic response to pointing out obvious links between diet and exercise and...(fill in the blank) is automatically: "But the drug companies haven't sponsored bazillion dollar research projects confirming that, so it must be misleading, harmful, and dangerous!!!"

I noticed Wasserman's thread....I was disturbed that she "hid" her cancer surgery and acted like nothing was interfering/different/no pity for her bilateral mastectomy...even hiding her drains and having her staff carry her things so no one could tell!!!
I don't think that "hiding" and then "coming out" and "sponsoring this bill" gives a clear message. I was confused. As a seriously battling survivor, I agree with you about research. It concerns and angers me that the current chemo is it for TNBC!!!!!!!
ps-if Wasserman was bald from chemo....what would she have said then?
pss-if we pass a bill on "education", could we spend it on the DOCTORS who dx and treat women?????????
just a thought!

I respect her choice to handle it however she saw fit and speak out if and when the time was right for her. And would say the same of absolutely anyone fighting this in their own way.
IMHO, we've thrown an awful lot of money on docs who dx and treat women, and the results have been less than stellar.
I did the entire 'aggressive' regimen prescribed by modern medicine, which still left stuff lighting up on scans. Wasn't until I turned to healers not bought and paid for by pharmaceutical companies, that my prognosis improved.

I so understand what you mean...I do respect all of us handling our situations as we see fit. I was speaking of her political position and being confused by the situation...so your thoughts on that and others I very much welcome ...and I would LOVE to hear more on healing options...I am signed up for a kripalu retreat for healing this summer during chemo

Suzie,
I watched the TV interview of Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and I'm with you. I agree she has a right to deal with her cancer diagnosis as fits her needs, but WHOA BOY did she ever miss a chance to educate the public with a true reality show. I've often thought if all women who sport the bald look went out in public with bald head shining and the Mona Lisa eyebrow feature and no makeup to fill in for eyelashes, then we'd get some attention. And don't you think a non-male bald head in Washington D.C. would set those lawmakers to thinking about living up to the promise made so many years ago to fight the War on Cancer by finding the ultimate cure?
Gotta add one more idea. Ladies email your congress person about your feelings on the EARLY Act. Doesn't matter if you support it or not, just take this opportunity to throw in your personal story and thoughts. I did. I'm going to be waiting to see if Mary Bono of CA responds.
Have a good day. Today is starting out nicely here in the So. CA desert.
