Topic: 1st oncology appointment tomorrow Posted: May 07 2008 at 1:27pm |
I am going to my oncologist for my first appointment tomorow. I have learned from my path report that I am triple negative. I only thought I was confused before, NOW I REALLY AM! Did some of you have chemo before surgery or visa-versa? I know I will know more tomorrow, but some moments are almost unbearable! I fornd out I had breast cancer on April 17. I was on a cruise ship in Mexico.

Hi Robin, if they biopsy before surgery you can tell if you're dealing with cancer. Many oncologists would like a shot at the tumor while it's still in you so they can see if chemo shrinks it....this is called neo-adjuvant chemo. Some gals had lumpectomies that surprised the doctors when they turned out to be cancer, these women have are not able to have sentinel node biopsies (they have to do full axillary), clear margins (without another surgery)or the option of neo-adjuvant chemo. There are some gals on this site who did neo-adjuvant and the chemo wasn't effective....this means the tumor continued to grow which creates a greater risk for mets. I did not do neo-adjuvant, but if I did I wouldn't let the doctors wait until the end of treatment to scan my tumor...just incase. 20% of TNBC does not respond to standard treatment, neo-adjuvant gives you the benefit of knowing if you're in that group. It seems no matter what treatment we get we will always wonder what if we had chosen different.....that's our nasty beast of burden. I hope that helps.

Dear Robin,
First ask for copies of all your reports. Have everything explained to you and the reasons why the doctor would take this course of action.
When I was first diagnosed I had decided to get a second opinion. Many have...and have not regretted it.
Have someone be there with you to write everything down - even your questions. Ask for any information or literature the doctor has.

Dear Connie & Ronda,
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question, I really appreciate it.
I have had a biopsy. Triple negative. I had CT scans Monday of my chest/abdomen/pelvis. I am just anxious to get some solid answers from the doctors.
If a similar post to this ends up on this page it is because I am getting used to how to post.
Thank you again.
TTFN,
Robin

Hi Robin, it is tough getting your path report and waiting to see the Onc.
I'm so glad you are going in today. Waiting can be a nightmare sometimes during this time or waiting on a test result. Ask him any questions you have on your mind. You are paying this Onc to get you well. Take pen and paper and like mentioned above, another person with you really helps because we patients are upset and stressed and don't catch every word or feel overwhelmed.
Once you have a plan lined up w/your Onc then things will settle down.
Try to research, learn what you can about trip neg and stay with us for updates and what the doc has to say today.

Hi Robin,
When I was dx in 6/07 they biopsied the tumor and a swollen lymph node: both cancer. I had CT scans, bone scans, and a Breast Specific Gamma Imaging done since it was in my lymph system. Then I had chemo first, again because we already knew it was in my lymph system.
I had 6 rounds of ACT (adriomycin, cytoxin and taxotere) all given on same day. For me, the results were dramatic. By 3rd treatment nothing was feelable anymore. By surgery time, lumpectomy, there were just a few tiny cancer cells left. We got great clear margins and all lymph nodes were clear.
Coming up on my one year from diagnosis, with my 1st "post" mammogram on June 2. Trying not to think about that too much yet.

Morning Sandy,
Our daughter Lori had the same chemo as you, and was dx 6-13-07. However she had adjuvant chemo, due to a screw-up with the first surgeon/dx that the lump was a cyst. It is encouraging for us to read your post that the chemo worked for you. However, she had a mastectomy. Lori also had 6 rounds all given on the same day, 3 weeks apart. She then had rads 5x weekly for 6 weeks. She too will have her 1 year follow-up this month or next month. Trying not to think about it as you said. Lori's bc was not in the lymph system.
Elizabeth Edwards and Lance Armstrong were testifying before Congress this morning. I believe it was on CNN. Too little is being done to save people dx with cancer. Insurance companies are dictating as to the tests a person will have and the drugs used to fight this beast. It is almost to the point of being inhumane.
Thinking of you,
Hugs,
Nancy

I was diagnosed in 8/07, my surgeon decided that it would be best to have the lumpectomy first due to the size 1.9 cm, chemo, then radiation. It is different for everyone, depending on size, lymph nodes and age. My oncologist had ordered a bone scan and a Breast MRI prior to my surgery just to make sure that everything else looked fine. I am 40 years old so they wanted to be aggressive with my treatments. I had a total of 8 chemo treatments every other week, then 33 radiation treatments. So far, all is fine. I also had the genetic testing done. Thank God, both braca 1 and 2 were negative. I will pray for good results during your visit tomorrow with the oncologist.
Blessings,
Lisa

I learned a lot of good information from my oncologist today. I will be having more tests in the next few weeks. He also told me I would probably have chemo before surgery...Surgery type is still undecided due to upcoming tests and based upon the results.
Here we go again...Thank you so much for the caring responses
TTFN,
Robin

Robin,
My daughter had chemo first and I'm very glad she did. It's great you feel good about the information you got from your oncologist. More tests are always good!
Let us know how you are doing and what the next step is.
Hugs,
