Starting this topic in a new thread, as much interesting discussion is being buried on page 90 of the Welcome thread...

A couple questions:

1. Before all this HRT stuff, did our mothers' and grandmothers' bodies eventually adjust, or did they suffer in silence for the rest of their lives?

2. Have they found hormone positive BCs to be triggered by high levels of hormones, or an imbalance of hormones relative to one another, or a sudden change in hormone levels (as traditionally, bc hits post-menopausal)?

And a couple comments:

1. I was pretty much against HRT until I saw the Oprah/Suzanne Summers shows, for the following reasons: 1) Reports on Premerin and just intuitively not liking the unnatural-ness of it; 2) I didn't realize they can now personalize the regimen with bio-identicals; no longer a "one size fits all."

2. I have an appointment this week to check into it. Basically, I have worked VERY hard on diet, Chinese herbs, exercise, alternative healers, and they have helped a ton. But I am more than a year out of treatment and still don't feel GOOD. When the women on Oprah were talking about losing joy, energy and inspiration, it made me wonder if it wasn't the chemo/rads that I was struggling with, but the sudden menopause?

Just thinking out loud, and would love for anyone else to comment on their experiences...

cancer sucks and so does menopause.
everyone is different with their experience.
the women in my family never talked about menopause in front of me and when I was going through menopause I asked my aunts about their experience.  none of them had any horrible tales to report; they hardly had any symptoms.  at this point, i can't recall the gruesome details of menopause or chemo and they couldn't either.  Smile
it is a difficult time for so many women (and their families), but it does get better.  I never used HRT.  I was feeling rather well and starting a new chapter in my life, when the rug was pulled out from under me.  So, I am back to the basics of exercising, eating right and thinking positively, etc.

good luck with your decision.

My mom and sister went through 10 years of fire-breathing he** with menopause!

Mom pulled a Suzanne Sommers and experimented on herself. Chinese herbs and some special yeast concoction finally helped her. She finally had a hysterectomy, which she said saved her life.

I think it may hit some families harder than others. Couldn't help but wonder if all of these crazy hormone problems were tied in with our BRCA+ status as well?

Donna,

I cannot be of much help for you on this one.  My mother I believe was maybe pari-menopause right before she was diagnosed with ovca and passed away at 46.  It was so long ago but it seems like she complained some about hot flashes and erratic mood swinging.  I have no idea if she was taking anything.

When I was diagnosed at 56 I was on HRT, Prempro to be exact, the one which had just hit the news at that time and women were getting cancer.
As soon as I got my second mammo which proved positive I was sent directly back to my gp who immediately told me to throw the Prempro in the trash.
We did not know either of course at that time I did not have estrogen fed cancer.

My grandmother also passed way before menopause, very young.
