Hello,

My wife is on a regimen of carboplatin, gemzar and avastin. The last treatment they doubled her dose of Avastin.  Tonight she had a significant amount of blood in her stool.  I know this is well documented in the side effects but it has us a little scared tonight.

Is there anything that can help her such as slow down her pace?  She was more active today than she was the last few days.  We have left a message for the doctor, but not heard back yet.  Any experience with this or advice would be just very appreciated.

Thank you,
Paul  (husband to Susie TNBC with mets to lymph nodes st IV).

Paul,

I joke that I was bleeding from all orafices on Avastin.  Even at this low dose, I still have bleeding gums and tushie.

Does your wife have pain when she moves her bowels?  Is the blood fresh (bright red)?  Is it clotted?  For me, the bleeding came from a fissure that opened up due to the blood vessels being unable to regenerate (due to the Avastin), and later from hemorrhoids that also were slow to heal.  However, each time, I would notify my doctors and they would check to make sure that it wasn't intestinal bleeding.

It might be a good idea for her to chill a little bit for now and not be as active, at least until the doctor gives the OK.  They may need to re-adjust the Avastin dosage.

Best of luck to both of you.

Caryn

Hi Paul,

I'm currently on Avastin.  I have had experience with Avastin before, in 2006, so I know what to expect.

For me, since I usually only get the "spotting" (mostly on the tissue, not all over the stool) during the first week following Avastin treatment, I usually make sure that I take stool softener and laxative twice a day and maybe some fiber/Metamucil and lots of fluid, for a week or until I think "the coast is clear".
