I HAD NEOADJUVANT CHEMO W/ AVASTIN AND WHEN THEY DID THE ULTRASOUND/SONOGRAM . . CAN'T REMEMBER WHICH IT WAS . . MY TUMOR WAS GONE. THERE WAS JUST A BLACK SPOT WHERE THE TUMOR HAD BEEN. I GOT SO FREAKED OUT THAT I WANTED TO BACK OUT OF DBL MASECTOMY-- I MADE THE NURSE GET MY ORIGINAL PICTURES TO PROVE THAT I EVEN HAD A TUMOR TO BEGIN WITH-- I THOUGHT THEY HAD MIXED UP MY RECORDS AND I'D NEVER EVEN NEEDED THE CHEMO. TALK ABOUT DENIAL!! NEEDLESS TO SAY, SHE SHOWED MY BOTH SLIDES, SIDE BY SIDE, AND AFTER 2 XANAX, I ACCEPTED THE INEVITABLE. THE MAST. REALLY WASN'T SO BAD AFTER THE CHEMO. I HAD LOTS OF JOINT PAIN AND WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR 2 WEEKS WITH NEUTROPENIA. THEY HAVE A $2,000.00 SHOT TO PREVENT THAT --NEULASTA-- ASK FOR IT! I ALMOST DIED IN THE HOSPITAL--MY WHITE CELL COUNT WAS 1. INSURANCE MAY NOT COVER IT IF IT US USED AS A PREVENTIVE MEASURE, BUT I SURE GOT IT EVERY TIME I WENT TO CHEMO AFTER THAT. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS. PRISSY IN ARKANSAS.

NANCY,
ANOTHER THING THE DOCS DON'T TELL YOU BEFORE CHEMO IS HOW HARD IT IS ON YOUR TEETH!! I HAD TO HAVE OVER 5 THOUSAND DOLLARS WORK DONE AFTER CHEMO. THE ENAMEL , AND DRY MOUTH JUST REALLY MESSED ME UP. INSURANCE SAID "NO PROOF CAUSED BY CHEMO", WHEN I HAD NO CAVITIES BEFORE AND NUMEROUS ROOT CANALS TO BE DONE ALONG WITH CAVITIES. THE SORES ON MY GUMS JUST ATE AWAY AT ONE SPOT ON MY FRONT BOTTOM TOOTH AND I WILL HAVE TO HAVE A SKIN GRAFT TO FIX THAT. PLEASE TELL PRE CHEMO PEOPLE TO GET THEIR DENTIST TO MAKE THEM A FLUORIDE TRAY TO WEAR AT NIGHT -- JUST ONE MORE THING TO DO, I UNDERSTAND, BUT DENTAL WORK IS SO EXPENSIVE--AND HURTS!!I HOPE I SAVE SOME SMILES!! LOVE, PRISSY

Dear prissy,
Ohhh sweetie, this is just horrible. One more reason today for me to loathe both the medical profession, bribed by the drug companies which I detest, and also the morons sitting in the cublicles passing judgement on you who not only was dx with tnbc, but then took all these chemicals, and then suffered more.
What did these insurance morons think you did? Chew on rocks to have the damage to your teeth and gums that you had? This is one for the books, and I would bet the farm that there are thousands of women with the same horrific problems that you have. That is probably kept very very quiet, and the drug companies will never list that as a side effect!
Prefecly healthy people are dx with cancer, and then after all the treatments are never the same....never!
I will put this in the chemo tips, just as you have written it, as this may save many women from going through what you have gone through. Prissy, I hope you are feeling better and have no more problems from now on.
Many hugs,
Nancy
have to wonder if the Avastin is the reason for you TIA...?

I am sure the course you took was the best way to go. I am curious, however, why you needed a mast when the neoadjuvant reduced the tumor so drastically. Usually, the neoadjuvant leaves the door open for breast sparing surgery. But that would mean you would require rads--maybe you didn't want rads?

I did not want rads because I was told that it makes recon "more complicated" . I had the dbl mas because I felt it was the safest way to go. I had a "skin sparing" mas.
Since I had the TIA (transient ischemic attack) in Feb. and had to be put on bpressure med, plavix, and crestor and they found blockage in my L carotid artery, my plastic surgeon is hesitant to do recon unless my cardiologist approves it. So, . . . who knows ?
I am just frustrated at BREAST CANCER!!!!!!!! PERIOD!!

Given time, you will most likely be approved to go forward with the recon. The skin sparing mast will def make it an easier process.
