I am 56 yrs. old. dx 10/08 with TNT .75cm,stage 1,grade 3. Have finished 4rounds AC, followed by 35 radiation treatments with 8 boosts.

My radiation Dr wants me to start to Zometa as a preventative measure. Has anyone done this?. I hear there has been success with this preventing reoccurence, but there are definite side effects.

Also, Is there any follow up tests besides a mammogram to see if the treatment has worked or is it just wait and see?

Many thanks, Susie

Hi Susie,

I answered your follow-up question in your other post.

I have not been offered Zometa.  If someone has I'm sure they will step up to the plate.

Hi,, my sister went on the Zometa after she was diagnosed with a recurrence. Her first infusion she had a really hard time with nausea and was pretty much out of it for a couple of days. We got her some pre meds for the next round and she's just fine now.

Her scans show her tumors have shrunk a bit so for her it's a success.

I've been contemplating going the Zometa route but I think I've decided against it because the side effects are so horrendous. My onc says he has lots of patients on it and has had minimal problems. Some insurance companies won't pay for it so be sure and check that out; oh and also there's some clinical trials going on you might check on. My onc said the problems generally arise when you take big doses too frequently and for a prolonged period of time.

For now I'm going for some big doses of D3. Good luck !

I never thought about it making me sick....ugh! I do not have recurrence yet. This was strickly preventative. I don't know what to do. I will check to see if insurance pays for it.

Many thanks,
Susie

Susie, my insurance did send me a note back that they would pay for it and interestingly we also got a note back from supplier that they have options for helping out financially if insurance declines.

My onc said there is a German trial that has just come out with results that are very promising, it has a shortened time frame and also fewer side effects. I'm with you, we're about the same age and I'm looking for something to take to lessen the odds of recurrence. Not much out there.
