I understand that ER & PR positive cancers have their growth fed by estrogen.  Estrogen either helps create fat cells or is stored in fat cells, hence why low fat diets seem to help our positive friends.

I've also read that low fat diets may help us negatives a little.
Low fat means 30 grams or less a day.
My doctor hasn't really stressed that to me (he just keeps on saying, "We just don't know")-- how about yours?

Recently I read in our Memphis newspaper that researchers have discovered that triple negative cancer seems to strike African Americans more than caucasians.  And is more prevalent among women who did not breast feed.  So some researchers are taking their studies to Africa to see if they can detect any clues in that culture.

It's hard to believe that the answer isn't somewhere in the "hormone" realm.

Hi,

My oncologist stressed a low fat diet for a completely different reason.
He said that because chemo and radiation can create heart problems at Any time after treatment -  that I should maintain a low fat diet to avoid
having a high cholesterol which would clog the arteries and lead to heart disease.

I recently read that cancer has now surpassed heart disease as the number one problem.
More funds need to be directed towards cancer and in particular triple negative components.

About the breast feeding and hormones playing a role in triple negative -
my guess would be that breast feeding stimulates estrogen and that could be why women who breast fed are more likely to be  ER/PR  Positive.

Lucky, The reason I tossed in the question about breastfeeding is because I would have assumed the same thing you did about it stimulating estrogen.  However, I did breastfeed my daughter and still developed a triple negative tumor, so I thought it might be an interesting point.  I figure that until the real key is discovered, any idea is fair game.

My oncologist also stressed a "healthy" diet, which includes watching fat and carbohydrates, but more than anything else she said that exercise is the best thing we can do to help prevent recurrence and fend off the other long-term effects of chemo.  I've also read that chemo can age a woman's body up to 10 years, which includes bone density loss, decreased metabolism, weight gain, loss of energy, and potential heart problems.  Again, the recommended solution was exercise.  I don't know about the rest of you, but exercise is not my favorite thing to do.  But the information I've read and the studies I've seen are strong motivators in keeping my sorry butt on my treadmill as often as I can.

Hi,

That Is a good point you are making about breast feeding and the estrogen factor.  I really would like to know exactly what the researchers are looking at to try and find a common denominator for triple negatives.

Anyone know when  triple negative  first became an issue for researchers ??

Diet and exercise -   well,  it really wouldn't hurt anyone to follow a healthy lifestyle so it's worth trying.
