Topic: Zometa Posted: May 23 2014 at 12:30pm |
Hello, My MO has suggested Zometa infusions (bone strengthening drug) twice a year as an extra preventative against recurrence (improves odds by an extra 3%). It was suggested that I do this about half way through my 12 weeky Taxol infusions (I finished Taxol #4 yesterday). First, you have to get an OK from your dentist to make certain your teeth are in good order because it carries a small but real risk of some kind of necrosis of the jaw. Has anyone out there had these infusions?

Hi, we had a discussion here a bit ago on the new study from OSU that indicated the use of "Evista" may be a good choice for Tnegs. Here's the study http://oregonstate.edu/ua/ncs/archives/2014/feb/osu-study-osteoporosis-drug-may-treat-breast-and-liver-cancers and on our discussion thread several women said they were going to be asking their onc's opinion of the study and if Evista might be an alternative.

Wow! Thank you for this information. I will discuss at my next MO meeting at the end of my Taxol. I believe the rationale behind the Zometa was that since it's a bone strengthening drug and TN can cause mets to the bones, it would be beneficial in that way only?? But this study on Evista seems to offer protection at the cellular level. Are there any known downsides to Evista?

Hello MomMom44, I have been taking Evista for many years, except when I took chemo. I may have some of the lesser side effects, cramps, etc; but I had leg cramps before I began Evista, so it is hard to say. I am so thankful that my GP suggested this for me when I refused the hormone pills after menopause.
Good luck and God Bless, Lillie

I met with a bone health specialist last week to discuss my osteopenia and the best treatment for me. I brought the paper on Evista to ask about. There is a higher risk of blood clots and since I had a blood clot in my early 20's that prevented me from taking the birth control pill, she did not want to take the risk with this drug. We're leaning towards Zometa after she analyzes a panel of bloodwork to see how my bones are doing.

Lillie, Thank you for your feedback - you are so helpful to many. Donna, You too! You have a wealth of information. Certainly understand why you are not advised to take Evista, but do you agree that it seems to have more preventative properties behind it than just the bone strengthening benefits of Zometa? I did find out that the chances of getting the jaw necrosis condition with Zometa is only 1%, which is great.

Mommom44,
If I didn't have the worry about a blood clot, I would have pushed for the Evista/Raloxifene. On a side note, was advised against Fosomax. It has a long half life - 10 years, compared to other options. I think they said Zometa has only a 3 month half life.

Thank you for your response Donna. I seem to remember hearing years ago that some women have severe hot flashes with Evista, but maybe at age 67 that would no longer be an issue for me. I used to suffer from them terribly when I was in my 50's. They ask me at the Onc's if I have them now on Taxol and I can gladly respond No!

I brought the article about evista and tnbc to my mo and she was very willing to prescribe it for me. I've been taking 60 mg/day for just over 2 months and no side effects so far.

Dear MomMom44,
I can gladly report that hot flashes have never bothered me since I started taking Evista. I was past menopause when I began and am now 73. It has only been the past few years that I've seen any publicity about Evista. I'm really glad it has "caught up" with the present day, and with enthusiastic reports.
God Bless, Lillie
