    Posted: Nov 08 2013 at 9:56pm

A close family friend was recently diagnosed with triple negative invasive ductal carcinoma. She is 70 years old.  When they did the biopsy, they found at least one positive lymph node. The CT of the chest, abdomen and pelvis were clear as was the MRI of the breast.

Her surgeon is highly respected and the top choice for many people with whom we have spoken. When our friend asked the surgeon when she would do the double mastectomy, she replied "soon", but the office called yesterday and said the surgery will be the 19th...of December!

Is it normal to wait this long? She is not having any type of chemo or radiation prior to surgery.

Thanks for your help,

Julie

It does seem like a while to wait. I had mine about 3 weeks after diagnosis. Can she ask to see if the date could be moved up?

Dear Julie,
Is your friend planning to have immediate reconstruction?  If so, maybe that is when the general surgeon and plastic surgeon could schedule a joint surgery.  The expanders are placed at the time of mastectomy so both surgeons have to be available at the same time.
(My next statement is just my own observation)
I am convinced that some surgeons, radiologists and oncologists are not up-to-par in their knowledge of "triple negative".   Maybe your friend can ask more questions as to why the long wait until surgery.  I was diagnosed on Friday and had surgery the following Thursday.
Keep us posted and the best of luck to your friend.

God Bless,
Lillie
