I am 3.5 years since diagnosis. My 6th child graduated high school this May and went off to college at the end of the Summer. I now have 3 kids in college. I am grateful for every day. Small inconveniences of life are inconsequential now. Never give up.

Today I celebrate my two year survival anniversary. I am doing the Snoopy dance! I continue to eat a low fat diet, exercise regularly and keep all of my doctor appointments. I am also in the metformin trial at Vanderbilt. I pray every day for a cure for all cancers. I read the posts on this site daily and I keep you all in my prayers too. I am so grateful.

I was diagnosed mar 2013,  had a double mastectomy may 17, 2013.  started chemo jun 27.  im beyond nervous of a re-occurance.   my left breast was triple positive,  my right breast was triple negative,  I tested positive for the brca1 mutation.  im getting ready to do my 5th treatment.  I have six total to do.  then my MO wants me to take tamoxifen for 5 to 10 years.  ok,  with that they want me to have my ovaries, uterus and cervix removed.  because of the brca1 mutuation my ovaries have to be taken out because of the risk,  then my uterus because of what the tamoxifen does.  im 44 years old.  i don't want to be pushed into menopause.  what does that do to a woman sexually?  my breast have already been taken away.. now they want to take the organs that make me feel like a woman... really? are there any others that this has happened to?  how did you deal?

I posted over two years ago. It's been 4 1/2 years for me and next March will be my 5 year anniversary.Tongue  I try not to have this disease be my identity but sometimes it's hard..Still VERY grateful to God that I am still here.  I had diep flap reconstruction last Dec. and the results were wonderful and I feel much better about how I look.  It was a miracle really.  It took me four years before I realized that ,you know, I think I just might be around for a while and I don't want to look like this anymore. 9 1/2 hour surgery. SO SCARED but Sooooo glad I did it.  Fantastic Dr.   I never thought this would be the road I would be traveling but I still have God so I still have hope...I have learned there have been many good things resulting from this cancer diagnosis and to count my blessings not my problems. I have met many strong ,beautiful people along the way who helped me through the rough spots and this forum helped me greatly early on giving me support and guidance when I needed it most..Thank you! Blessings to you!

I was really into exercising when I discovered my lump. After treatments I did start to watch my diet pretty close but now I eat and drink what I want for the most part. I take a multi vit and calcium each day and have my wine in the evening. I decided to just do things in moderation and not deprive myself of what I enjoy. Bunions keep me from running so now I just walk occasionally.

I'm kind of courious? When do we begin to count the survival rate anyway? Is it from the day the cancer was removed ie after the mastectomy??

Hi,

I think of survivorship as:   One is a survivior from whenever the survivor "says so".
I like the term "survivior-thriver".

From http://www.cancer.net/survivorship/about-survivorship
"Defining survivorship.
Surviving cancer or “survivorship” can be defined in different ways.
Two common definitions include:
-   Having no disease after the completion of treatment,
-   The process of living with, through, and beyond cancer.
By this definition, cancer survivorship begins at diagnosis. It includes people who continue
to have treatment to either reduce risk of recurrence or to manage chronic disease. "

From prior threads and posts on the forums, members have shared that they and their
oncologists have defined survivorship as:
            From date of diagnosis.
            From date of surgery.
From date of completion of complete treatment plan.
            And other definitions..

If one is reading a research article, it will usually include the author's
perspective of the specific time period that "survival" is being referred to.

With caring and positive thoughts to all survivors,
Grateful for today.................Judy

I am 5 years, 8 months from my last chemo.  My oncologist says he is pretty sure we've beaten this, but I am always hesitant to think that.

I feel very blessed to have come this far and ache for all my sisters who haven't been so lucky.

God bless each and every one of you who are having to fight this horrible disease.

I am now a three year survivor, Smile, and I rarely think about recurrence possibilities.  A few years ago my onc. tried to get me to understand the pointlessness of stressing and I was really stressing.  To celebrate my 2nd year, we went off on a great trip to China.  When I returned home, I was seriously ill from something.  After a week in isolation and intensive care, I returned home and recovered.  That experience made me realize there are a lot of things that can get you, so I quite worrying.

Keep smiling, and live life!

Linda

ps. China was great in spite of nearly killing me.

I am a 5 year survivor today. It's been a long haul but worth it, I have come to understand that life is a precious gift so live it to the full.

Thank you to Steve who has been a wealth of knowledge and a great support especially in the early days, this site is lucky to have him.

Looking forward and not backward.

Alison
