Topic: 1rst mammo after treatment Posted: Jul 10 2013 at 9:29pm |
I have my first mammo after treatment tomorrow. (Dx 7/12, 1.5cm, no nodes AC/Taxol and radiation). I have broken down and cried several times today. My best friend is coming with me. Just hope I don't start crying - so embarrassing! Since I'm still considered under the general surgeon's care, they didn't schedule clinical exam. I had MRI 3months prior to diagnosis which was normal. The nurse practioner felt the cancer, it didn't show up on mammo or ultrasound. I called breast center today and asked if I could get exam with same NP - they had a cancellation so she will do exam prior to mammo. Made me feel a little better but this anxiety is awful. Does it get easier?

Kerin,
Good luck tomorrow. I think it gets a little easier as the years go bye. I still get nervous each time. An appointment, scan, test or exam can bring the anxiety back just like it was in the beginning. I wonder if we'll ever truly be the same? PSTD? Do you have any Ativan? Maybe taking one before the test will calm your nerves. Glad the same NP will do the exam. It should be very comforting to you.

Kerin, I'm just in the beginning and I think the thought of this scares me more than surgery and the treatment. Staying hopeful for you....BIG HUG

Well, my clinical exam and mammo were normal. I mentioned to the NP that I had been having some pain in affected breast so they decided to do ultrasound. They found 1 spot (1cm) that looked "concerning" and 2 other small areas that they wanted to watch. I decided to have all 3 areas biopsied, one of the small areas was a cyst. Will get the results back tomorrow. Has anyone had a local recurrance? I don't know if that's what it is but I'm just sick about results. Will know what I'm dealing with tomorrow. So first time only showed up on clinical exam and whatever this is, only showed up on ultrasound. Mammo's dont show anything on me. Scared and so mad at this stupid disease! If it's nothing I feel like I just want these breasts GONE! Ugh! If it's positive, I'll see my general surgeon tomorrow afternoon and go from there.

Kerin,
Sending caring and positive thoughts to you. Some say uncertainty is one of the hardest thing to deal with. Wish you didn't have this uncertainty to deal with until you get your results.
Will concentrate on ultrasounds having many false alarms and that your exam and mammogram were normal.
With lots of good thoughts, Grateful for today............Judy

Dear Kerin,
I just caught up with this thread. I am so sorry you had to endure such anxiety, but Thank God the outcome was GOOD.
The first mammogram I had after treatment was horrifying. The nurse said, "You will know the results in a day or two". I became so 'out of control' that she found a radiologist to read my scan immediately. I will say that it has gotten better as time goes by, but I doubt I will ever have another mammogram without some anxiety. (My cancer was found by mammogram in 2006)
Again, Great News!
God Bless,
Lillie

Kerin, I'm new to this forum but wanted to say that I'm happy to hear that your scare ended well. I have been in the world of cancer for 23 yrs. since age 24, & I can totally emphasize with your anxiety prior to that followup. Been there, done that. In recent yrs., I've had 3 callbacks on mammograms, 2 of which ended up in stereotactic needle biopsies & that feeling of life being on hold till I got benign results. The recommended breast MRI, unfortunately did not result in good news for me & I'm still in the stage of learning what's next. Since I am facing a bilateral mastectomy + chemo, don't know what followup tests I'll be anxiety-ridden about down the road - since mammos will be in my past.
