Topic: Metformin Trials Posted: Jul 05 2011 at 10:52am |
This is a current list that came up for "Metformin Breast Cancer". http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/results?term=metformin+breast+cancer
Take the time to open the 2nd one and more as it indicates that there is interest in using metformin in and for different stages and to research what it can enhance or alter for the benefit of the patient.
Drives me crazy that we see so many trials not in the US but for our sisters abroad, hopefully these are something that some can take advantage of.

Greetings to the wonderful and caring people who post and/or read on this forum,
METFORMIN vs placebo trial now at DFCI, Boston, MA. (Dana Farber Cancer Institute)
At ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01101438 (does not list DFCI as site but DFIC IS a site now)
On DFCI website: go to: dana-farber.org >>>research>>>clinical trials>>>search for DFCI clinical trials>>>breast cancer>>> around # 38 :Phase III randomized Trial of Metformin vs placebo.
For info call: Nursing Research Team at phone 617-632-3478.
NOTE: (believe) one must be within one year of diagnosis. Trial has baseline glucose requirement.
See also TNBC forums>TNBC talks:Using metformin for other TNBC forum posts on metformin.........
especially posts on "off-label" use of metformin.
Off-label use of metformin: MUST get kidney baseline tests and monitor carefully. Need to follow
recommended guidelines for before tests with contrasts dyes and when surgery planned.
Metformin already used for some IVF (in vitro fertilization) patients, for polycystic ovarian syndrome and
reportedly for some "pre-diabetics"
Questions:
Any tips to prevent or decrease possible GI side effects during initial weeks of metformin?
Any information re: metformin potentially making tumors grow? (? only one study in Connecticut that
questioned that tumors progressed on metformin (jnci.oxfordjournals.org. June 29,2010. Karyn Hede.
Doctors seek to prevent breast cancer.......)
Any information re: concerns for non-diabetics using metformin?
With caring and positive thoughts to all,
Grateful for today.
Judy

Posted below on the the "Using Metformin" topic forum site.
Posting here in case someone would read "metformin trials" but not "using metformin"
Apologize for duplication.
__________________________________________________________________________________
FYI:
There are over 150 current active metformin vs placebo clinical trial sites in the U.S.!!!!!!!!!!
For the past few weeks, I have been trying to find out where all the sites are listed.
On: www. clinicaltrials.gov only the Canadian sites are listed.
After seeing a post on the "using metformin topic forum", decided to put some info on the forum...in case anyone is interested and nearing the one year within diagnosis cut-off point for the clinical trial.
FINALLY spoke to someone 10/19 in Canada (NCIC ctg) who was not aware that the U.S. sites were not
showing up on the clnicaltrials.gov site. This person said they would get back to me 10/20
if possible. He sent an email to the appropriate person in Canada (but it was the end of the business
day.) Initially, I was going to wait for his reply. Then, was concerned some people might be nearing
the cut off date....thus, this post.
It's been an interesting few weeks. It started with a call to the clinical trials group in Canada......who
referred me to the U.S. NIH and NCI. The NIH and NCI keep referring me back to the other group.
Finally, spoke with someone at the National Library of Medicine who referred me back to Canada!!!
Fortunately, the man in Canada today was VERY eager to get the U.S. metformin vs placebo clinial
trials sites listed at clinicaltrials.gov.
In Canada: NCIC-CTG-MA.32
In U.S.: NCT: 01101438
(maybe by the time some of you read this the clinicaltrials.gov site will show both the U.S. sites
and not just the Canadian sites for NCT: 01101438)
NCT:01101438 Clinical Trial
Phase III Trial of Metformin versus Placebo in Early-Stage Breast Cancer
Definitely open at:
Dana Farber Cancer Institute Boston, MA
Vanderbilt Cancer Center Nashville, TN
Indiana University Simon Cancer Center Indianapolis, IN
If one googles:
"Phase III Trial of Metformin versus Placebo in Early-Stage Breast Cancer"
individual sites will come up which appear to have the metformin vs placebo clinical trial.
I did not verify but more then likely the following do have the trial:
CA: Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center Los Angeles, CA
KY: Central Baptist Hospital Lexington, Kentucky
N.H.: Concord Hospital Concord, N.H.
N.M.: New Mexico Cancer Care Alliance 505-272-7813
N.Y.: Northern Westchester, N.Y.
N.Y. Mt Sinai Medical Center N.Y. N.Y.
Ohio: Ohio State Cancer Center, Columbus, Ohio 614-293-5066
Ohio: Metrohealth Medical Center. Case Western Reserve University.
PA: Fox Case. Philadelphia, PA
Utah: Huntsman Cancer Institute. Salt Lake City, Utah.
VA: Martha Jefferson Charlottsville, VA
WA: Swedish Cancer Institute Seattle, WA.
WA: Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Seattle, WA
D.C.: Sibley Memorial Hospital Washington, D.C.
Members of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group.
Members of the Southern Cancer Control Consortium, Inc 336-777-3036
There are a few other sites listed when one googles "Phase III Trial of Metformin versus Placebo in Early-Stage Breast Cancer "
(You will need to google site to get phone number for the cancer centers above. Did list just a
few phone numbers)
Will post any info on the forum once I hear back.
If anyone knows of other definite sites having this trial and they are not listed above, please post.
Again, hopefully VERY SOON the clinicaltrials.gov site will have ALL the U.S. sites with complete
addresses and phone numbers.
Grateful for today.........Judy

Addendum for those who may be close to being within one year of diagnosis.
There are reportedly (per Canada's National Cancer Institute) so many U.S. trial sites,
if you do not see a site near you, consider:
Call your usual cancer center and other surrounding cancer centers to see if they have the
metformin vs placebo trail. If none do, ask their clinical trial research person, if they know of the
nearest metformin vs placebo clinical trial.

GOOD NEWS!!!!
Recieved an email this morning from the gentleman that I spoke with yesterday at the
NCIC CTG. (National Canadian Institute for Cancer: Clinical Trial Group)
He said their IT department is working on the issue.
He expects the U.S. metformin vs placebo clinical trials sites to be posted in the U.S. in
the next day or two.
Repeating from above posts of yesterday with only some site:
For those who may be close to being WITHIN ONE YEAR OF DIAGNOSIS:.
Since there are reportedly (per Canada's National Cancer Institute) so many U.S. trial sites,

Have been checking Clinicaltrials.gov and still don't see any the US sites for this trial.
See posts on this matter of October 20,2011.
I plan to contact the person I spoke/emailed around Oct 20 next week if US sites still not showing.

Despite Earlier Claims, Metformin Not Found To Improve Survival Rates After CancerDespite previous scientific studies that suggest diabetes drug metformin has anti-cancer properties, a new, first-of-its-kind study from Women's College Hospital has found the drug may not actually improve survival rates after breast cancer in certain patients. The study, published in the journal Diabetes Care, failed to show an improved survival rate in older breast cancer patients with diabetes taking the drug metformin, a first-line treatment for diabetes. However, the authors caution further research is necessary to validate the study's findings. "Metformin is a drug commonly used by diabetic patients to control the amount of glucose in their blood," said the study's lead author Dr. Iliana Lega, a research fellow at Women's College Research Institute. "Although existing scientific literature suggests that drug may prevent new cancers and death from breast cancer, our study found the drug did not significantly impact survival rates in our patients." Scientific research has found metformin is associated with an up to 30 per cent reduction in new cancers and a reduction in tumour growth in non-diabetic breast cancer patients treated with the drug, Dr. Lega notes in the study. To test the drug's anti-cancer properties, the authors examined 2,361 women, aged 66 or older who were treated with the drug and diagnosed with breast cancer between April 1, 1997 and March 31, 2008. The women were followed from their date of breast cancer diagnosis until their death or until March 30, 2010. The researchers found no significant statistical correlation between cumulative use of metformin and death from all causes or a significant reduction in deaths due to breast cancer. "What makes our study so unique is that while the effects of metformin have been well documented, previous research has not examined the cumulative effects of the drug on patients, particularly breast cancer patients with diabetes," Dr. Lega said. "This is important given that diabetic patients may switch drugs over the course of their treatment." The authors note a lack of data on body mass index, breast cancer stage and a short followup period for breast-cancer specific deaths, limit interpretation of their findings. Further research is necessary in a younger population of patients with breast cancer and diabetes. "Understanding the effects of metformin on breast cancer patients is critical in helping address the gap in cancer outcomes in patients with and without diabetes," she added. "The findings will help physicians inform treatment plans for patients with diabetes."
