QuoteReplyTopic: Chinese Herbs to prevent recurrence? Posted: Aug 10 2010 at 4:32pm
Hi All,
I saw a Chinese medicine specialist and he prescribed a formula for me (immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory). I researched the ingredients on the Sloan-Kettering herbs and botanicals lists and also on the web. I did not see any real drawbacks as far as side effects or interactions with the supplements I am taking are concerned, but I have not talked to anyone who has firsthand experience in taking the herbs.
Anyone taking Chinese herbs? Any knowlege of them that you can share? In my pre-cancer life, I was always reticent to take vitamins or supplements, but now I am more willing! At the same time, I don't want to cause harm or spend money on something that's not worth it. Any input you have is much appreciated!

Many of us are taking supplements and vitamins and also have changed our diets and life style looking for ways to prevent recurrences or at least in my case to be able to feel I'm doing something about it. You can look up a discussion titled Edge's CAM: http://forum.tnbcfoundation.org/edgescam_topic6149.html?KW=edge%27%27s+CAM There is also another discussion about Vitamin D which has also been talked about a lot in this site.
My oncologist has in fact recommended that I take a bunch of vits and supplements including Vit C, D3, Calcium, Niacin, B Complex, CoQ10, Magnesium, Selenium, Probiotics and others. I also take by recommendation of my accupuncturist (and with my onc's blessing) a supplement called Zyflamend which is a blend of herbs that promotes healthy inflamatory responses from the body (it acts as cox II inhibitors - antiinflamatories). And I also follos Edge's CAM (you can read all about in the discussion I just mentioned (which my onc said was ok for me to do).
I would recommend that you run what you take by your oncologist. They know better about the drug interactions and also if you have any particular health concern that may be affected by any supplements (remember that just because they are natural doesn't mean they are not affecting your system just like regular drugs do...).
Best,

I took chinese herbs as recommended by my accupuncturist during chemo. I have no idea what they were. I would simmer them up as a tea and drink it. It looked like a bunch of dried twigs and leaves. I was so glad when chemo was over I immediately quit drinking the tea. It wasn't very tasty but I was willing to do what I thought might help.
Did they tell you what these herbs were? The most recent Consumer Reports magazine talks about the most dangerous supplements. Make sure nothing you're taking is on that list. Definitely let your onc know what you're taking.
You might want to ask your question on the link Natalia provided for the Edges-Cam. You'll get more feedback. I've also gone to the NoSurrender website and asked the Edge my question. He graciously offered his advice.
Best of luck,
Donna
