Susan Putman Motheral

09/01/09

Susan Putman Motheral, 41, succumbed to a year and a half battle with Triple Negative Breast Cancer at Regional Hospital on Monday, August 31. For information regarding service and visitation, call Brummitt Funeral Home 352-9391. Services were incomplete at press time.

Mrs. Motheral was born December 10, 1967. A fierce advocate for Autism, Susie participated during the years in fund-raisers, as well as interviews broadcast on WBBJ-TV Jackson, stressing the urgency of helping children with autism and the importance of understanding Autism as well as the strain on the parent(s). Paul and Susan's daughter, Abbey, contracted Autism at two years of age.

The family requests memorials be made to the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's Autism Center, 2525 West End Avenue, Suite 450, Nashville, TN 37203, where a foundation bearing Susan's name will aid numerous children and their families with much needed help, as well as potential research into the causes and one day a possible cure for Autism. It was Susie's main passion and in lieu of flowers or plants we ask that you contact Laura Pevahouse, Director of Development, Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, 615-343-4176, fax 615-343-7606, or e-mail laurapevahouse@vanderbilt.edu.

This fund will be kept active at Carroll Bank and Trust, where you may contact Mark Warren in regard to the fund that the family hopes can continue to contribute to this worthy cause.

She won numerous beauty revues. Among them were Miss McKenzie, Carroll County's Fairest of the Fair and Miss Teapot Festival at Trenton.

She was a graduate of McKenzie High School and also of UT- Knoxville. Survivors include: her husband, Paul Motheral; two daughters, Victoria, 16, and Abbey, 11; her mother, Beverly Ellis, wife of Garland Ellis of McKenzie; her father, Jimmy Putman and wife, Jo Ann of Jackson; one sister, Starla McCallister and brother-in-law, Bobby McCallister of Benton, Arkansas; two nieces, Hannah and Rachel McCallister; one nephew, Matthew McCallister; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Jo Ann Motheral of McKenzie.

Remember Paul Motherall, "Zen Rookie" who was kind of active earlier in the spring?  I had done some googling and found out about their autism work, etc.  He had posted on No Surrender's site in late August, and then...nothing.  So I googled today and found an online church newsletter that offered condolences on Susie's death, I believe it would have been Monday of last week.

He was intently in love with Susie, and made her sound like a solid rock of strength.  I know they have two daughters, one of whom is severely autistic.  It's going to be hard for them.

Oh, that is so sad.  What great people.  Thanks for letting us know.  They certainly gave it their all, and loved passionately during the time they had.  I remember his posts about their autistic daughter, and how scared he was of losing Susie, both for him and especially for her and their other child.  Good, good people.

Love,
Denise

I think you are talking about Joan Motheral of McKenzie, TN. I live a short distance from them. It's true, she died about 2 weeks ago. A few months back the McKenzie Banner did a story on her. That was the first time I'd ever seen "Triple Negative Breast Cancer in print. The article mentioned their dedication to austism research. She was just 41 years old...terrible sad.
Her father in law owns Super Drugs in McKenzie. I hope to stop by and see them soon.
When I first read about her I thought how blessed I am that I have lived 67 years (so far) and seen my children grown and my grandchildren born.
My prayers go out to each member of her family...so brave, so young and now with the Lord!
