Topic: shortened radiation Posted: Jan 15 2009 at 5:57pm |

I have been researching shortened radiation that uses a little higher doses but shortens the time from 30 TX to about 16-20. Does anyone have any info on this?

Alaura,
Not sure if this is what you are referring to? I think some of the gals have had this.

I saw my radiation/onc last Thursday. She informed me that I would be getting 25 tx over a 5 week period. The treatments would start out mild and increase in intensity as the weeks progressed. When asked if I would be getting IMRT (intensified modulated radiation therapy) she said my insurance would not pay for it but that it would pay for 3D conformal radiation. However, if I qualified for Medicare I could have IMRT which is apparently slightly more effective than the 3D. I don't know what "slightly" means. I have tried to learn more about the different types of radiation and am of the opinion that IMRT is safer for adjoining organs such as lungs and heart. Wish I knew more. I'm calling Anthem Blue Cross tomorrow to see what they say...that is if I can get through to someone who has the knowledge to give me an answer. I really wish I felt better about all of this.

Hi Alaura!
I believe we are neighbors! I live in Auburn, WA . . . did The Reporter do an article on you?
I am having 3-week radiation, aka Canadian Study. Actually, I am having 16 treatments. Tomorrow will be #11. Whoo hoo!!! The Virginia Mason doctor is the one who mentioned it to me when we met last July. I did some research - looks like Nancy has found some info for you - and felt very comfortable starting this tx.
I'm not sure what the Rad Onc calls it, but instead of 200, I'm getting 265. I do need to get a copy of his recommendation for my files.
I just sent you a PM. Please feel free to give me a call. We can meet up if you'd like.
Take care,
Renee

I had an oncologist in Denver mention a 4 week course of radiation (instead of 6). I am seeing the rad onc in Denver on Feb 3 to get the final word. The onc in Denver was referring to the meta-analysis in Lancet--Canadian study--showing benefit of radiation with 1-3 + nodes. I would like to pin down exactly what the benefit is before I sign up for rad with one node positive.
dx 11/08; stage IIa; BRCA1 +; bilteral mastectomy 11/08; just finished 3/6 rounds of TAC + zometa.

Wow, I was just thinking about this, good information to read. I had been wondering also about the timing of things. I finish chemo up mid March and they have loosely said I should wait for surgery for 3-6 weeks. Initially I was thinking 6 weeks would be appropriate, then I started thinking that if the surgery came quickly it would have a better chance to grab the tumor before it started to regrow.
Simultaneously, I was at first told to wait 2 weeks from surgery to start the radiation, but now I'm wondering if it's a good thing to shorten that up. The higher strength radiation seems appealing, just curious about the side effects

I'm not sure about shortned radiation other than the recent press. I do know about an inhanced radiation available/approved by insurance companies for those whose have denser breats and/or the tumor is on the ride-side (the heart size). I had this form of radiation; lesser side affects in terms of being easier on the skin. Check with your radiologist. Warm wishes, Tracy
