Hi there,
I have had 3 of my 4 scheduled AC treatments and they think I picked up a stomach bug right after the 3rd one, needless to say I have been very sick and lost 12 lbs in a week. I had to have IV fluids daily to keep me from being hospitalized. What my question is I went on Monday for the 4th treatment but the Dr said she wanted to postpone a week because of my health. I know they told us from the beginning we really needed to stay on schedule now they say they might give me a lower dose when I come in on Monday. Has anyone else had to delay and then I'm scheduled to start Taxol every week for 12 weeks. I know I just have to get thru this but it has been so hard. My friend who does some homeopathic stuff said maybe to start some Juice Plus capsules to help me get stronger..anyone taken them or know anything about them.I have trouble with no appetite and my heart says you have to eat my stomach says no way..my family and I are a little at odds because they think I need to try harder..I know they are stressed and love me but it's easier said then done..I figure you ladies have been thru this and can really understand and may have some good advice that helped you..any comments or suggestions greatly appreciated..God Bless Kathy

Kathy,

I'm sorry for all the problems you are having right now.  It's not unusual to have a delay in treatment or even a dose reduction.  After my first cycle of Gemzar/Carbo/Iniparib, I had a 4 week delay due to elevated liver enzymes.  The delays are tough and can create anxiety at the exact time we don't need anymore anxiety!  Regarding the Juice Plus, I'd talk to your onc first before taking them.  I took Juice Plus before I was dx and my onc said it may be too much antioxidants so to hold off on them.  Just to be safe, I'd run it by your onc to make sure he/she has no objections.

Take care,

Donna

Kathy,

My oncologist will sometimes give a dose reduction, if the patient can tolerate it, rather than skip a dose. At other times (depending on the situation) he will delay a treatment. It is done either way and probably will not cause any problems with the total outcome of your treatments.

There were time when I could not eat during chemo, but I would force myself to drink Ensure or Boost just to know that I was getting some nourishment. I could chug a Boost better than eat a SANDWICH ugh!

Good luck and God Bless,
Lillie

Kathy,
I'm sorry to hear you're having troubles. I have had a real problem with lack of appetite. Nothing looks or sounds good to me. I just keep trying stuff. This week I can eat those little red potatoes if they are boiled with a little salt on them , no butter. I am able to eat some chicken but not much else. Just had my fourth, and last, round of A/C on Wednesday! Hoping that the Taxol will be easier to stomach!
My MO did tell me in the beginning that he sometimes will delay treatment or switch to a lower dose depending on how well his patient is tolerating it. Good luck.
Wishing you well, lilyrose

Always check with your onc before doing any homeopathic supplements. I did check with mine and I was allowed a low carb protein powder that I would mix and drink when I couldn't eat. I was extremely nauseated but for some reason I could always get down some ice cream!! LOL I would mix up a shake with some of the protein powder. As for the dose change I would follow whatever the onc recommends and try not to worry about it. Your body is trying to heal from an infection and to take chemo on top of that might not be a good thing. I would imagine from time to time people get ill while on chemo and the onc's do their best with the situation. Chemo stays in your system and continues to work for a few months.   I don't think a week off or some reduced dosage would be a problem. Maybe they will extend the chemo if they think it is necessary. Positive thoughts coming your way!!!!

I too had a horrible time with AC. My second treatment was delayed a week because of low WBC and from then on I was given Nuelasta. But I puked all the time, was dehydrated, got thrush, diarreah, you name it. I was given IV fluids several times for the dehydration. I was not allowed any supplements or homeopathic treatments either. Lost a lot of weight- don't know how much but I went from a size 14 to a size 7. My husband had to force me to do the last round of AC but I am super glad that he did. But I slogged through it and am now 8 years NED. So hang on, grit your teeth and get it done! When you get down tell yourself that it is only temporary and that you are investing in your future. I found that soft bland wet foods in small amounts worked best. Soft wet egg noodles with butter and parmesean cheese, cottage cheese, and raw tofu were the easiest foods for me to slurp down. And lots of water, of course. You can do this.
