I just completed day 21 of 28 scheduled days of radiation. I was told the most common side effects are tissue-changes/sunburn-type effect and fatigue. Well, I definitely am tired and am getting red and itchy, but...I also seem to be having a lot of upper back pain. It seems to be focused behind shoulder blades on both sides & extends up to top portion of back and shoulders at times. Now and then I also get some pains in my collar bone. I was told about 15% of my lung would be sacrificed from the radiation. I'm not sure if I'm feeling the effects of that or my mind is so fixated on it with paranoia that I'm carrying the stress in my back!

Has anyone else had these type of side effects with radiation?

Thanks.

Beck,

Thanks for your input. Yes, I did neoad chemo first. I have been having some residual pains in my elbows and (a lot) in my knees/lower legs, especially when it's cold. I had incredible (incapacitating at times) leg pain when on the Taxol, so I figured the knee pain was firing back up from that.  However, I don't remember this type of back pain on Taxol, so I wasn't sure if it'd be affecting a new part of my body all of a sudden, now that I'm almost 5 months post-chemo. It kinda started coming on around the time of starting radiation, I was just told that that's not a "common" side-effect of breast irradiation. I forgot to mention too in my first post, that I have expanders, which I suppose could be contributing to it (?)

I will be talking to my oncologist about it, it's just that I'm not scheduled to see her until Feb 14. I'm really trying to hold out until then w/o getting too panic stricken, seeing as I go to her so often already for every little thing! In the meantime, I appreciate feedback on here from ladies who may have had similar experiences to help put my mind somewhat at ease.

Yes....I absolutely am having the same radiation side effects as you are.  I feel like I have a bad case of arthritis.  Tremendous upper back pain and I walk like a very elderly women because I am so stiff.  Not happy with this but would be even more unhappy with NNN breast cancer.  I hope all this chemo, surgeries and radiation will be worth it and the cancer will not return.
