Topic: Is there any hope? Posted: Apr 01 2016 at 1:59pm |
Hello everyone,
My mom was diagnosed with TNBC last summer and due to her chronic kidney disease underwent a lumpectomy followed by radiation and no chemo.
6 months on and her lungs became full of fluid leading to a collapse of the left lung. The doctors have so far done one pleurodesis and are planning on doing a second one. Her kidney disease has also advanced and PET scans show a metasis of the BC.
The oncologist is advising a low dose of chemo immediately following the second pleurodesis. Not sure how the kidneys or the lungs will react to it. Not sure if we should say no to chemo given the circumstances.
My mom has given up all hope and is depressed out of her mind. Has anyone been through a similar circumstance or had a low dose of chemo? Does it work to control metastatic TNBCs?
Thank you so much for the time you took to read this. Hope there is something that will help alleviate what seems to be a no win situation.

I am so sorry you and your mom are going through this. If the Dr thinks it might help. There are some amazing medicines available for metastatic breast cancer. Some ladies here on this site have had it in multiple places and chemo has stopped it. Read the discussion on stage 4. Some people are still around after years of fighting it. So there is hope. We are not Drs though. I will pray for you and your mom and Im sending you the biggest cyber hug. Do read the discussions listed on the main page its very encouraging. There is discussions on many types of chemo. There is a search option at top right of main page too. Hang in there and know we are here for you and your mom.

Thanks so much for your replies. My mother started bleeding profusely last Sunday and the doctors advised immediate surgery to resolve whatever was causing the bleed. She collapsed immediately after the anesthesia and had a cardiac arrest. We thought she wouldn't make it but somehow after 4 days on a ventilator she is still with us.
The doctors have also done 2 rounds of dialysis and she is starting to breathe again on her own. Her oncologist is recommending Nab Paclitaxel as the chemotherapy drug. I am not sure if she is in any state to handle chemo now.
Does anyone know of this drug?
I am just living on a prayer hoping that each day is an improvement but its really hard to see her suffer.

The chemo is called Abraxane and is from the same family as Taxol and Taxotere and may be more effective and better tolerated.

Worriedson, my sister also had other issues that made it harder to treat her Tneg. She was put on Abraxane and it did a wonderful job for her. The side effects were minimal. It's such a difficult thing to stand by the bedside of a loved one, I wish you strength and hope that the Abraxane helps your mother as it did my sister.

My mom passed away on the 30th of April. She had to suffer through a cardiac arrest, dialysis for kidney failure, potential neurological damage, ARDS and the constant lung bleed caused by the metastatic triple negative breast cancer. She was very brave but she suffered incredibly.
After more than 30 days in intensive care, the bed sores and the pain were horrific yet she kept fighting on the ventilator. Ultimately we were left with no choice but to stop all treatment as there was no way back for her. Making that decision is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life.
I was by her side as long as I could and saw her wither away slowly. She never got the chance to be treated by the chemo drug.
God was very cruel and I am never going to forgive him for what happened. My faith is shaken entirely.
To all those who read this thread and specially to those who replied - my eternal thanks.
I only hope that no one ever has to suffer what my poor mother had to. Being blown by a bomb will be more humane than what she went through.

Oh worriedson. My heart breaks to read your post. I am so sorry you lost your mom that way. Please reconsider your faith. God didnt want your mom to have to suffer like that. When He created us and this world He didnt want all the horrible evil things to happen. Satan caused us all to be cursed. Not God. I watched my mother die of cancer too. And then 20 years later my dad, Just last year went from being a big strong farmer to a withered up shadow of himself. They both knew it wasnt God who caused it. We are all comforted that God has provided heaven and Jesus as the way to escape the horrible parts of our lives here. Heaven is our home. We suffer here for a short time compared to eternity with Him in heaven. I now have tnbc. I suffer some every day but my faith gets me through each day. Matthew 16:33 Jeaus told His followers and us. "In this world you will have trouble. Take courage I have overcome the world."

Worriedson,
I'm so sorry your mom suffered so. It's also terribly difficult to have to stand by and watch the ones we love go through it. No words can express my sadness at your mother's passing. I'm glad you were by her side.

So sorry that you lost your mom in that manner. I watched my mom suffer for over 10 years. It's tough on the family. As an agnostic I certainly don't believe that a higher deity gives people cancer. I look at it as a bad genetic draw. And it sucks. Only time will help now. At least your mom is no longer suffering- not much comfort I know but it's really all anyone can offer now. I've been there. Time heals and you will always miss her. Know that she loved you and tried as hard as she could to stay here with you.

Worriedson, I am so sorry to hear about your Mom and how overwhelming it must have been for her and you and your family. We will be thinking of you and it is a reminder of how strong I need to be for my wife and the uncertainty we all must deal with. God Bless.
