Hi gals,

I've had sharp pain in my armpit and ribs since working out- plank and push ups etc. It's been about six months since my radiation. When I don't workout it feels better. But it still hurts. Does anyone have ideas about this?

And I have pain in my breast where the surgery is- but no evidence of a tumor by ultrasound or mammogram. Is there a surgical reason for this?

Thanks,

Kelsey

Kelsey,

I had odd pains at different times over the years. Sometimes I still have them. I am just used to it by now. One of the biggest issues I've had that I really never see addressed is what has been described to me as scar tissue which binds and pulls different areas, whether it stems from the axilla or the tumor site. In the first 6 years after tx I would have my massage therapist "work" both areas to break up the scar tissue. This helped immensely. Eventually I think the scar tissue was all broken up and certainly not binding anymore.

Hi Kelsey -

I have had similar pains in my armpit and chest/breast area while working out. I believe that the muscles and nerves are affected during radiation - there is definitely a tightness and decreased flexibility in that area, and where the node biopsy was done. I am 3 years out and still get this. It has gotten better, but it will never be the same. Btw, I had a lumpt. and I still have some residual pain 3 years later from scar tissue.

Hi Kelsey,

I still have odd pain 7 years out.  I, like Kirby, had some "cording" of the muscles in the first few years.  I would get into a warm shower and massage the painful area and it would limber-up and feel much better.   I always have some puffiness in my back and just below where the lymph nodes were removed.   Sometimes worse than others.  Sometimes more uncomfortable than others.   Please don't get discouraged, for me it has become a part of my life.

Good luck with your muscles and pains.

God Bless,
Lillie

I also have periodic episodes of pain. Sometimes it is in the area where the lumpectomy scar is. Sometimes it's in the area where the lymph nodes were removed. All of my doctors tell me that it is "normal" to have these aches and pains, that it's part of the process. At first I was convinced it was the cancer growing back, but now I have come to terms with just living with it. But I don't like it. I'll often just work through it. At it's worst, I'll have to refuse to make dinner or do other household chores until the discomfort settles down.

Kelsey,

Have you spoken to your surgeon about the type and intensity of the exercise you are doing and asked if it is okay. IMHO, you may be doing too much, too soon.
