Today I went for my annual ob/gyn appointment, which was delayed for a few months after getting diagnosed with bc, surgery and chemo.  It's been about 3 1/2 weeks since I finished chemo.  During the exam, the doc said my right ovary was enlarged and wants to do an ultrasound to check it out.  He wasn't overly concerned (or at least that's what he told me) but since I've had bc he wants to check it out.  Has anyone else experienced a similar situation??? Just when I was getting my emotions and head back to normal, I get this information.   Sure  they tell you not to worry. . . I've heard those words before.  I think my OCD is coming back!

my ovary was found to be enlarged before i was diagnosed with bc.  i had surgery this year and it was a rare slow growing ovarian cancer.
most enlarged ovaries are a benign situation.
i can relate to your emotions.

Krisa,

Thanks, I'll pray its benign.  Did you have to have any chemo after the surgery for the ovarian cancer?  I'm just a nervous wreck until I get the ultrasound.

Thanks for the support.  I had the ultrasound last week and was told the cysts on the ovaries were normal and they weren't concerned.  I'm still going to follow-up with my ob/gyn when I visit with him.  They want to perform a procedure to remove a cyst and polyp from the uterus.  I think they called it a hysteroscopy and polypectomy or something like that.  The doc doesn't seem too concerned and that it most likely will be benign.  They encouraged me to proceed with the reconstruction surgery first.  I'm scheduled for my breast reconstruction surgery on Monday and will have this other procedure around the middle of November.  I'll keep you posted.

Glad to hear it, Donna.    What kind of reconstruction will you be having?  Oh- I see your signature that it must be implants.  Are you going with saline or silicone?  A woman in my support group just had hers done and they look *great*.  She was so proud of them she wanted us all to feel them - I can attest that they feel real!  She got the silicone ones, I think.

Diane,

I'm going with the silicon implants and hope they feel more normal.  The tissue expanders aren't very comfortable and won't be sorry to have them removed.  I'm looking forward to being able to sleep on my stomach again!  I put off most of my appointments until I finished chemo.  I have to say I'm getting a little nervous every time I go to a doctor.   Now tomorrow is the eye exam. . .

Donna, I had saline implants before BC. When I had to get a mastectomy I went with the silicone. Much happier with the silicone. They look and feel so much more natural. I also went for the nipple tattoo, which turned out great. Good luck and best wishes.

Oh, one other thing. I've had a cyst on my overy for three years. It's never grown or changed. When the doc saw it (3 yrs ago) and did an ultra sound, he too said its nothing to be concerned with. He didn't even want to remove it. We just keep an eye on it.

Good luck, Donna.  I think if I had implants and was considering a tattoo I'd go for something other than lifelike nipples.  A friend had purple hearts tattooed on, a cute idea.  Though I guess if the object is to look 'normal' that wouldn't quite cut it :).

cmtrots, how are you doing?  It's nice to 'see' you!

Love,
Denise

Cmtrots,

Thanks.  Since posting this topic, I've also talked to some friends who said they've had cycsts and they turned out to be nothing.  From further research, it appears its a normal process and most of the times we don't even know we have them and they go away.  I'm going to have a uterine hysteroscopy in a few weeks to remove a cyst and polyp in the uterus.  The doc isn't too concerned about the cycsts on the ovaries, but I'll make sure he monitors it just in case.

As far as the implants, I'm having reconstruction surgery next week and going with the silicon implants.  I'm not looking forward to another surgery, but will be happy to get rid of these tissue expanders with their very uncomfortable implants.

Denise,

The tattooing options sound interesting.  Right now, I don't think I'll get the nipples.  I may change my mind down the road, but right now I'm tired of doctors, surgeries, etc!  Just the thought of the breast reconstruction surgery has made me anxious.  Now that it's getting closer, I'm mentally prepared and will be happy when its over.  Maybe I'll be able to sleep on my stomach again soon.

Dear Donna,
The tattoos can be added any time. Don't rush into it.

Hi Donna,

My exchange surgery is scheduled for Monday also.  Having been thru it before (last November) I can assure you that this surgery is NOTHING like the other one!  The recovery is really nothing.  I can't wait to get these rocks off my body, thats for sure.  I too am getting  the silicone.

Oh, I had a hysteroscopy about 5 or 6 years ago.  Its not bad.  I have had cysts on my ovaries and uterus and all have been nothing, and I am a BRCA+ gal.  Its hard not to let our minds go "there" but try not to.

Best wishes for Monday!
XO
~Sara

Sara,

Best wishes also on your exchange surgery.  I like your description of "rocks" because that's exactly how they feel.  You mentioned that you've been through this before.  Did you have exchange surgery also last year?  Was there a problem that you had to do it again?  Just wondering.  Thanks for letting me know the exchange surgery is nothing like the mastectomy.  My ps said it's a breeze compared to the first surgery.  Let me know how your recovery goes.

Unkle,

Thanks, I won't rush it.  Before the dx, I was hardly sick and rarely went to the doctor, except the annual ob/gyn and mammogram.  Now I feel like every visit, they find something wrong.  I guess bc is making me a little paranoid.  I had my eyes checked yesterday and the doc said there was a big change in my prescription.  The good news just keeps coming!

Donna,
As you can see in my signature, I had the bilateral mastectomy 8/08 but it was nipple/areola sparing.  I went thru the expansion, and exchange and thought I was done.  I had no idea at that point the true nature of triple negative.  In Feb I found this wonderful site and got a real education.  I went to Boston in March for a consultation regarding chemo, and was told to have my nipple/areola complex removed.  I think it was mostly due to my BRCA1+, not as much as the TN.  Soooo, In July I started over again this time with latissimus flap & expanders.  Someone else might not have opted for the second surgery, but I have zero tolerance for recurrance risk.  I have to do EVERYTHING in my power even it only reduces my risk by 5%.

As for being paranoind, you are sooo normal.  I think once you are faced with BC (or any cancer for that matter) every ache, pain, etc we think "oh no...could it be...?"  I went thru a whole thing with findings on a PT,then -xrays, then another CT and ultimately it took 8 months of worrying and waiting to find out it was all nothing, the abnormalities were probably there my whole life.  I have been told over time it gets better, but it never completely goes away.

Good luck Monday!

Sara,

Thanks for the explanation.  When I was considering the bilateral mastectomy, my friend who had bc surgery a year before me told me to ask about the nipple sparing surgery.  It seemed like a terrific idea, but when I asked my ps about it she said it wouldn't give me what I wanted most, the least chance of recurrence.  Keep us posted on your recovery also.
