Dear Friends,

The light has dimmed and blown out...Caryn is now with the angels in heaven. The end was peaceful and serene and occurred at about 10:15 this evening.

Dear all,

we just lost a dear, dear courageous woman...

It was an honor to know Caryn...as others have written above she was an inspiration to me and countless others. She came from a family that had endured much. Her dad was a Holocaust survivor and also had the BRCA mutation that he passed to Caryn...

So, in some way we were cousins as we shared the same mutation.

After meeting her on another message board for a number of years I went to visit her the first time she was in CTCA. I think it was 3 years ago. I traveled to Philadelphia because I was drawn to her somehow.
I saw her in the corner and immediately knew it was her as she was typing on her laptop. She showed me around CTCA and then went for a radiation treatment. It was a long one but she came out and refused to let me drive, even though she looked bushed..Then we had a lovely dinner with Steve's wonderful parents (My condolences to you both as well). The next time  I saw her I had dinner with her and Steve and got slaughtered as we played Jeopardy together..The next time I saw her was several months ago when I visited her again at CTCA. I read her the Lord's Prayer at that time but she was not having any of that and remarkably bounced back.

She had such a presence. Such strength. Such wisdom. Such a wonderful sense of humor and such intelligence. She also did not pull any punches about what she felt a BRCA+ woman should do regarding surgeries. I believe she saved many lives.

Caryn, I shall miss you and in some mystical way I believe you will continue to guide my advocacy work. You were a true champion and a mensch.

May you rest in peace, dear friend...

and Steve, you defined what it means to be a good husband and I use my highest compliment, mensch, for you, too. We, here, grieve with you.

My condolences to Caryn's brother and his family, as well and I can't find the proper words for her mom. The worst pain, possible. Losing a child.

love to all here...Caryn told me this site was wonderful and she was so right...we have a beautiful family and we have lost a precious member and she will always be remembered...always..

through my tears,

Steve

p.s. Nancy, again thank you for your dedicated postings...

Ugh, so sad to lose her.  I hope there is some sort of afterlife, and that in it Caryn is restored to health, soaring high above the earth with beauty and wind and a deep vision into all things big and small rushing through her.  (Like my dream about death).   Soar on, Caryn.  You savored every last drop of life and taught us do the same, at least some of the time.   By example you taught us to tell the truth, even when it hurts, and to hold on to that humor, even when it seems that there is nothing to laugh about.  I admired the heck out of you, and will try my best to follow your example of living life to the fullest even in the face of adversity.
love,
Denise

Caryn Rose, your spirit will continue to live in each and every one of us.  You have impacted the lives of so many, many people.

When we are placid in our disease, we will enjoy our lives, as you taught us.  When we may be faced with problems and much fear, we will fight, as you taught us.  Through the beacon that was your light, you will continue to teach us.

There is a bright new star in the sky from this time forward.

God Bless you Caryn, Steve and your loved ones.  I do not post much anymore but have followed every step of Caryn's journey and like everyone else here I dreaded this day and feel profoundly  sad that such an amazing person has been lost so young--and that she had to endure so much in the final years of her life.  I know I could never have faced Caryn's circumstances with the strength, candor and unselfishness she showed.

At some point last summer, I stumbled across Caryn Rose's thread and read every entry that morning.  I believe it started with her discovery that the cancer had spread and continued through to a time where her daily sufferring was apparent.  Her courage, strength, and humor was evident as she faced this terrible disease.  She was such a force, and she impacted so many.  Her time here has ended, but she lives in the hearts of so many.

God Bless all of you.

Thank you Lord for your mercy upon Caryn Rose, her Mother, Steve, Steven & all her Family!

Family ties have certainly been predominant in this journey back to You Lord!
How to live, love, enjoy, show compassion, have empathy, find the humour in everything and friendship has been so visible in this journey from the first moment until the last breath was taken by Caryn Rose.  I hope that others will learn that when a commitment is made to each other, there is nothing that can break that commitment.  NOT even death....

The life we were blessed to be a part of has left this world, but Caryn Rose's memory will live on in the lives of the many people she has touched right here at this foundation as well as in her daily life.  My deepest sympathy goes out to all of you, through my tears for the loss you are feeling right now.

Not long after I joined here, I found Caryn's thread and have kept up with her heroic battle since.  She will be missed by so many and Steve and her entire family will be in my prayers.  She leaves us a beautiful legacy of grace, humor, and spunk.  I would love to have known her personally, but am thankful that I could know her through this forum.  Love to her and those who love her.

Even though I never had the privilege of meeting Caryn, I somehow felt so connected with her as I helped my family navigate their BRCA mutation, decisions, and my sister's TNBC now metastasized to her bones, lungs and liver. Caryn was a true inspiration as is her husband. I only hope I can be that strong for my sister when the end is near. I pray for her family to somehow find a way to deal with this tremendous loss and to find comfort in how many lives Caryn Rose has touched.

from Steve posted last night

At the End of a Sad Day......

Posted 12 hours ago

...I sit here in bed and I think of the wonderful things people had to say about my beloved wife and I smile for the time we shared, and I weep for the time we will never have.

Although I saw with my own eyes that she was in the coffin, I know that she was above us and all around us, surrounding us with her gentle spirit...giving us all the will to continue on...to honor and to cherish her memory. And I have to believe that same spirit was, in part, if not wholly, responsible for making it rain as we turned into the cemetery, and for making it stop as we approached the grave site---just another reminder of who was still in charge :)

In the days, weeks, months and years to come, we will feel her in the sweet breezes, we will hear her in a favorite melody, we will think of her in passing conversation, in an overheard phrase...and we will know that she will never truly leave us.

My life has been blessed as never before and I am truly thankful for my nine years - ups and downs- with such a courageous, sweet, warm, loving, intelligent woman of valor.

Rest in Peace my love, my friend, my soul mate, my cherished partner

I wish you well as you move into this next phase of life.  Whatever happens, you can be proud of the way you have conducted yourself through grueling circumstances.  You can know that you did all you could, that you cared for Caryn and loved her from the day you met to the day she died.   You were there for her.  If you ever wondered what sort of man you are, I hope you can feel in your bones that you have proven yourself to be a man of great integrity and love.    Let that be a comfort to you, along with memories of your life with Caryn, your dear wife.
love,
Denise

So sorry to hear of Caryn's passing.  She is at Peace now.  God Bless her, and God Bless her husband and family - that they may know Peace too, in their grieving and beyond.

Caryn was a powerful force for this Forum, and others, as evidenced by the outpouring from friends and "strangers" (myself) alike.  We can all draw from her strength, and hope to have her grace during our own battles with this disease.

Deepest sympathies to all her family and friends.

Deborah.

Steve:
Your love for Caryn is so evident in all that you have done for and with her over your short but quality nine years together.  Some people never experience what you two have... the soul mate part! So you have been very fortunate to have this...

My best friend Elaine who passed in September married Freeman and he lost his first wife just 6 years before they met. So he has two wives lost within six years.  Needless to say he was devastated by both and still is to this day.  If you ever need to discuss anything with him, let me know and I can hook you two up.

Also, Craig who's wife Diane (a member here) lost her battle with tnbc just the other day as well.  You are never going to be alone any more, just log in and we are here for you too.

The days ahead will be difficult but we learn to adjust to the changes and it doesn't get better it just becomes more manageble....

Thank you for sharing and keeping us posted on your journey to the end of one day and today another new beginning.  Caryn is just a whisper away....

an update from Steve posted at 10:51 last night...my heart goes out to you Steve

Just When You Think......

Posted 14 hours ago

...you've taken enough hits for a while, life throws you another
one. My ex-wife called me this morning to tell me that our
daughter, who some of you saw just this past Sunday, was hit by a
car while crossing a street in Houston (she went back there only
Wednesday afternoon, so not even a full 24 hrs later).

I don't have all the details as to who, how, where, why....what
I do know is that Melissa is in ICU with broken ribs, a laceration
on her skull, a concussion, broken neck and collarbone...

For Steve:

Even though we never met, I am wishing I could take away some of the pain from you and Melissa and all those who suffer with her.

I pray that the fears and difficult feelings you must have right now will be lessened somehow.

Hoping with all my heart for the best very soon.

With love and comforting wishes,

Sue

from Steve posted this morning at 10:11

How 'bout Some good news....

Posted 18 minutes ago

.....for a change? Everybody ready?

I just got off the phone, that's right--the phone, with Melissa, who called me on Mary's cell. She is OUT OF ICU and in a regular room. She is sheepish, chagrinned and all those other similar adjectives. The doctors will be putting her on solid food some time later today. As previously stated, she has a few cracked ribs, a broken clavicle (arm in a sling) and a body full of bruises.

The 'dad' in me could not help but giving a few 'lectures' (including to always make sure you have your bus pass, which is apparently what triggered the whole incident---also, never get into an accident while your dad is mourning his recently deceased wife), but the 'father' in me is weeping for joy at the recovery and prognosis.

On the lighter side, I received a huge Peace Lily today....I have a severely 'black thumb' so if anyone knows anything about the care and feeding of this plant, please post or e-mail me.

And lastly, but not leastly, on behalf of the families, I want to thank all of you who have sent condolences and warm memories of Caryn, and prayers for Melissa....they are all very much appreciated and I am very touched and consider myself very lucky to have such support in trying times.

Steve
