Hi Pam,
I have been hearing about vitamin D from all the natural food stores and homeopathic stores.  My husband happened to be in there one day and two women asked  him what he was buying calendula cream for and he told them his wife had radiation burns.   long story short one of the women was a homeopathic dr and told him to buy vitamin d for me...

not really sure it is working but it is worth a try.

I did read the article and I was surprised to learn, if I understood right that er-, vitamin d does not affect.  would that also be true for 3-????   I am going to continue to take the vitamin d, it can't hurt....

thanks for your research

  • In the case of ER negative breast cancers, there appeared to be no link between Vitamin D levels and overall survival. "
  • Is the above what you are referring to Kim?

What the real question is "what are "adequate" levels, there is much debate on this and most docs are waaaaaay behind the times..  If vitamin d helps with healthy gene and cell expression in seems like a no brainer that maybe folks with cancer or with high risk family history should keep an eye on their levels. I also think it plays a big role in recovering from chemo, with all the repair that goes on fixing what they've broken down. Sometimes these guys get so caught up in their studies common, sense goes out the window.  Why would the largest organ on our bodies be designed to make this stuff in large quantities if we didn't need alot of it, nobody questions bile made by the liver, but this....no we must study it more.  They all ready know it's important, thats why cod liver oil was a staple in the olden days, we've just forgotten what we all ready learned.

    Vitamin D...it's a good thing.

I work for a nephrologist (kidney specialist) and we test for Vit D on every patient close to 98% of all of our patients are Vit D deficient. Normal range is 20-100 ng/mL  so target range for Vit D is 40 ng/mL and above.. we put our patients on 50,000 units of vitamin D for 6 months ( 1 pill a week for 4 weeks then 1 month for 5 months)  just to see where my level was I got tested and I was only at 25 and I eat yogurt, milk lots of foods that are packed with Vit D and take daily vitamins... most daily vitamins only contain 400 iu (units) of Vit D so it is a small dose so I was surprised at my numbers.. but yes Vit D does help with breast health, kidney health (most organs) and overall being.  I suggest to everyone that asks me about vit D to ask their doctor to be tested it is a simple blood test called 25-hydroxy vitamin D level.

Thank you sdreyer,  a friend of mine who has lupus and had a kidney transplant had her doctor test due to my constant nagging, she was deficient and since that time her kidney's are functioning better and they've been able to reduce some of her meds.  This is so simple yet sooooo important.  I could use all the back up I can get.  I have yet to meet someone without a deficiency!!

    Keep spreading the D word!

    Ronda,

"In the case of ER negative breast cancers, there appeared to be no link between Vitamin D levels and overall survival."  I have seen this in atleast 2 different reports.

This is in relationship to the article I sent above from Medical News Today "Breast Cancer and Poorer Survival Linked to Vitamin D.

Can you speak to me about this?Confused-

    Hi Pam,
When they mix up all of us BC's in these studies it sure gets confusing.  It sounds like most of the women in this study were deficient, and nothing was done to get there levels up the entire time, they just wanted to see what would happen in the long run and the outcome wasn't good.  I'd rather see a study where levels were increased and then we were studied.  Less than half of the women studied were given adjuvant treatment, who knows how many were tiple negs in that group.  It's really hard to see where we fell in all of this, with tumors that tend to be larger and lymph node spread more common perhaps no adjuvant treatment given especially in this setting where they knew about deficiencies AND DID NOTHING. Also it seems a bit obsolete watching gals in the late 80's from Canada where treatment isn't the best and given the strides made in treatment in the last few years.
I think the bigger question is what happens to your body when it is d deficient regardless of if you have cancer or not.  Healthy gene and cell expression can be affected, auto-immune, hormone, malabsorbsotion issues are all a part of this picture.  How can we possibly survive all of these cancer treatments if a fundamental component is lacking in us getting well? I think vitamin d deficiency is certainly linked in the prevention of certain cancers including ours, but once the horse is out of the barn, it can also play a key role in longer, healthier survival, and who knows what else.  There is not alot of money in studying vitamin d cuz it's soooo cheap, free really, but I think as more and more people become aware I believe you will see that it does make a difference even with triple negatives and I think it will play a key role in making BC chemotherapy more effective just like it has with colon cancer.
The bottom line is it makes a difference with just about everything for those who are deficient and suffering from poor health.  To me this is so basic that getting our levels up should be the first thing we do before we undertake all of the other stuff they throw at us for joint aches, depression, infection, IBS you name it, including chemo.  If we give our body what it needs to work right, sometimes it actually starts working right.  To me it's like a car that needs gas, you can give it a new engine and it won't run, you can give it a new battery and it won't run, you can give it a pep talk and it won't run....it's because it needs gas.  This is what vitamin d is to us.
I know I'm cyncial about the studies, but I feel it's like if someone said we need to study water before we can decide it's a benefit to cancer patients and whether or not it changes outcome, try going without out it and see what the outcome is.  We were designed to make this stuff in pretty large quantities,  I'm tanner now than I have been in years brimmming with free D!.  Big pharma knows there is no money in vitamin d because it can't be patented, my guess is it will have to be Susan G. who will have the final say.  In the meantime having your levels up doesn't hurt, and can really help us feel better and live longer while we are waiting for the cure.

The only definitive answer is "there are no definitive answers".

    Here's to chaos!

I had just read two articles saying it wouldn't apply to trip neg, printed them out to read again.  Trip neg always catches my eye.  Then just now I read an article that said it only applies to estrogen positive.

You know women read this stuff and want to conquer the monster so bad, what are they to believe??

This stuff can make you want to quit reading but then how could you do that to yourself!Thumbs%20Down

    Hey there Ronda!!

Want you to know that I had my yearly gyn appt. on Wednesday, and the first words out of her mouth was "I want you to take 1000 iu's of D per day." After I have my bloodwork, we will see if I need more. My hubby is also taking it. It was pretty cheap. He got  2 bottles (100 tabs) 1000 iu's per tab,  for $6.48? at Walmart. He bought 6 bottles. Lori takes almost 5000 iu's per day, and is out in the sun(when we have it) evrey chance she gets. No sunscreen!!! Never did use sunscreen.

Gyn said that D is the buzz "word" now. Well, once she gets on the site (gave her the tnbc foundation site) she will see that we knew about it loooong before she didLOL Thanks to our VITAMIN GURU Ronda.

    Hugs,
    Nancy

Ahhhh shucks Nancy Embarrassed.  Again, just because your doctor thinks she's hip on D....check her work.  You really do want your levels between 55 and 70.  There is still much mis-information amongst the docs....but we're trying to get them up to speed....we meaning we civilians  :).

Pam,  I think the reason why er+ really benefit from D has to do with estrogen regulation.  D  helps with hormone balancing  so it may help quiet down receptors....just a thought.
As to to what it means exactly for us triple negs....maybe we gals can answer that question 15 years from now :)

Hey Nancy,  My friend was low and she was put on a single dose of 50,000 D3 once a week.  I know you don't want to go over 50,000 a week regardless, so how you get there is up to you.  I took 7000 a day.  Best way is to get out in the sun and then supplement heavily in the winter.

Beth Anne, Adequate vitamin D levels are important to everyone, but especially people with disease like cancer, so the boob thing doesn't matter.  It will also help your body rebuild itself during and after cancer treatment.  I haven't heard of any restrictions of it's use during chemo or rads.  I don't think it will help with hot flashes because it doesn't replace hormones.  I have heard that we Triple negs can get a bit of hormone replacement for hot flashes because we are ER-.  Ask your onc about it.

    Ronda,
Looks like an excellent article. My daughters boyfriend's son has Autism. I sent her the article. I was going to print it out (from 1st page) and when I did a print preview, I finally clicked out when it reached 515 pages.LOL

I'll just  print what I wantLOL Doesn't it make sense though. So many children dx with Autism, and when you look at how the scare of skin cancer has really kept the children inside. Of course the boob tube and the puter doesn't help either.

Thank you for all your research. Boy! What would we do without you and Pam!

When I was at the Young Survival Coalition I randomly met two survivors with autistic children.  The complexity of the human body will never be fully understood given the variables, but basic  food, air, water and sunshine are staples and simple.
