SHRINKAGE again on my 8 week scans on Monday. So I get another 8 weeks of veliparib then time to scan again. I am pretty happy about the results as I was pretty nervous. Sept seems to be a progression month for me. Seems like every time I have progression is has been in September. I have had a couple of good years where September has been a positive results month but was overly nervous for the scan. Just wanted to share my good news again. Praise The Lord !!!

Great news, Cathi!!!  I am very happy for you and for all of us in general because any kind of stride one of us makes contributes to the possibility that more of us will be helped!!!  Question:  Is veliparib only for TNBC or can ER+ patients get it as well?

Thanks and big hugs to everyone!

Brenda,

It seems it's being used on many types of cancer.  In breast cancer, it is being targeted with BRCA associated tumors as a PARP inhibitor.

http://breakthroughs.cityofhope.org/parp-inhibitor-veliparib-brca
At the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in December, City of Hope researchers presented preliminary results of a multicenter study exploring the single-agent effectiveness of the PARP-inhibitor veliparib in patients with Stage IV metastatic BRCA-associated breast cancer.

8 week scans are under my belt again! I am STABLE!!!! The only sign of cancer I have is my one pesky liver lesion! That dang thing just doesn't want to go away!!! But as long as it's not growing that is the best news any day!   So I continue on veliparib!!! I celebrated 5 years on November 2nd of my stage 4 diagnosis! Dear Cathi,

congrats on your stable disease...I am hoping that if enough women respond as you have the ABT 888 will be approved by the FDA.

A parp inhibitor, olaparib, was just approved for BRCA+ women with advanced ovarian cancer.

http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm427554.htm

It is extremely important that any BRCA+ women, here, also ask their physicians about their risks for ovarian cancer. Your Certified Genetics Counselor (if you had one) should have explained the substantial gynecologic cancer risks that are in addition to breast cancer risks for BRCA+ women.

My grandmother was diagnosed with metastatic ovarian cancer in 1946 when I was two. She only lived four months after that diagnosis and I sadly report that 68 years later 80% of ovarian cancer, in the U.S., is diagnosed as Stage III/IV disease, which is a major problem. An accurate test for early ovarian cancer is still not available. I attended a conference a few months ago and Dr. Noah Kauff, reported to us that in his opinion he did not see an early diagnosis test developing in the next few years. Dr. Kauff is an unusual combination of a gynecologist and medical genetics expert. He is also a marvelously caring physician and for full disclosure purposes is my daughter's physician. She had risk-reducing gynecologic surgeries shortly after her TNBC diagnosis and BRCA1+ test result.

http://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/doctor/noah-kauff

Having said all of the above, I am not recommending that anyone here have surgery but if you are BRCA+ please try to find out what your risks are. Regarding ovarian cancer, it is my understanding that the risks for BRCA2+ women are substantial but not as overwhelming as BRCA1+. My daughter was told that her lifetime risk of getting ovarian cancer, with the mutation she inherited from me, was almost 50%.

For reasons not completely understood women with the BRCA1+ mutation, when they have breast cancer, have TNBC 75% of the time. The converse is not true...when a woman has TNBC she is not BRCA1+ 75% of the time.

Nevertheless the NCCN guidelines state that any woman who has TNBC under the age of 60 should be BRCA tested. It is my view that, as part of that process, you see a Certified Genetic Counselor who can explain things in further detail. I have also seen medical professionals who have recommended risk-reducing gynecologic surgeries to their patients who have profound family histories of ovarian cancer, even if they are not BRCA+.

Sorry to be so long winded but the gynecologic piece is extremely important for many in our community who carry the BRCAmutation or have profound family histories of ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is not normally found at Stage 0/I except at the time of risk reducing surgery. A recent study showed that it is often found in the fallopian tubes.

My friend Lisa Guzzardi hosts a marvelous site called Advanced BRCA 1& 2.

She recently posted this study.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/25517954/?i=3&from=fallopian+tube+cancer

warmly,

Steve

Thank you so much for that information Steve. I am very well aware of my increased risk of ovarian cancer. When I was first diagnosed in 2005 with TNBC I met with a genetic counselor to get myself tested, we had just found out my mom's test results, which she is also a carrier of both genes as well. At that time I met with a gynecological oncologist to talk about my options. Because I was only 30 at the time, I didn't want my ovaries removed, instead I enrolled in a study of my ovaries. An ultrasound every 6 months and blood draws every 3 months to watch my CA 125 levels. I credit this study for finding my metastatic breast cancer. My levels skyrocketed during that 3 month testing which promoted more testing. My focus since 2009 has only been on continuing to beat the odds of stage 4 tnbc. So I still have my ovaries and I'll keep them until I am dead. Breast cancer is the biggest in my family. My mom is a 30 year survivor of stage 2 ER+ Cancer. Unfortunately my grandmother died in 1978 of metastatic breast cancer at the age of 49 and my cousin died of metastatic breast cancer in 2006 at the age of 34. My mother and her sister are both survivors so far.

I hope that veliparib is approved soon too. I know of a coupe of ladies who are also having excellent results with this drug. My cancer center has also put a couple more ladies on this drug after watching my great response for the past 9 months. I hope it continues. I have been off chemo 10 months now and while life is far from normal anymore it sure is A LOT better without poisons coursing thru my veins every week for 2 weeks and then a week off.

Merry Christmas to you Steve!! Thank you again for your informative post. I will be looking at your links in length in the new year.

Cathi,

Living for 5 years with Stage 4 is truly inspiring, and really is a miracle.  I am holding on to the belief that it can happen for me too!  I was diagnosed with metastatic disease in August 2011, so I am at about 3.5 years.  I actually need 6 more years so I can get my youngest daughter through high school and off to college, so that's the goad for now.

An amazing new book called Radical Remissions has stories of many people who have survived metastatic cancer and how they did it - from their stories I have been inspired to try some new things in addition the chemotherapy and anti-cancer diet and yoga I have been doing.  Next thing to explore for me is Reiki therapy at the Healing Arts Center iand to get serious about meditation.

Are you doing anything else beside the velaparib that you think is contributing to your stable condition?

Peace and joy,
Beth

Hi Beth! For many years until starting veliparib I followed the edge CAM along with chemo but since being on the study I have stopped all supplements. Even tho I know and have been told by a researcher that they are ok to use I just am not comfortable with it. So I only take Vit D3 and magnesium. I really don't know why I have lived for as long as I have with this disease. I put my faith in Jesus Christ and pray for continued good results, I do a lot of research as I am sure you do too. I am my own best advocate. It sounds like things are going well on your current protocol as well. Yeah!! My youngest is only a 5th grader so my goal is 7-8 more years and then I can go, so I hold on to that goal too. :) I have heard many good things about that book so I will be looking into it in the new year!!

Another scan under my belt and I am still STABLE!!! Ya-hoo, yippee, whoop whoop!!!!

In the words of the radiologist 'now given the lack of interval change in appearance of the lesion by CT and MRI scanning the appearance could represent residual scarring alone'. So perhaps this lesion is cancer or perhaps it's not!!!! Whatever it is, it isn't growing so that's good!!!

Next month will mark 1 year since my last chemo treatment!!! I have been on veliparib 9 months now and I wouldn't change my decision for anything! Even if I am only on this drug another 8 weeks that's ok. My body is better than it was 1 year ago!!!

So I will take my daily pills for another 8 weeks and hope and pray for another stable scan in March! Just wanted to share my good news with all of you!!!

HOPE always!!!
