We continually get requests for recommendations of doctors who are knowledgeable with regard to triple negative breast cancer. TNBC Foundation does not endorse any specific doctors but we welcome you to share your personal recommendations with other members.

Please reply back with your personal recommendations (Dr. Name, address and phone) and reasons for recommending.

DO NOT reply back with names of doctors to avoid as this could be interpreted as slander.

Thank you for your help.

I'm an MDAnderson patient and I've not had a choice in any of my doctors. It took me five weeks to get in as a new patient (might be quicker this time of year) and I was just glad to get ANYBODY there. With a reputation like theirs, I don't imagine they hire just anybody so I was glad to take the rotation roulette. Plus, you can self-refer yourself now. Don't need a doctor to do it. Second plus, if I was going to the trouble of seeing someone there, I'd stick with them. My sister goes there too and she lives in Denver. They've given her years of good life when other doctors had written her off (ovarian cancer). I'll have my mastectomy there this month. Just done with chemo. Including signature even though it needs updating. Have to figure out how to do that.

Greetings.

What do members think about updating this original post
from 2/17/2010 on “Oncologists Recommendations”?
Think it would be great to have updated info on TNBC experts
in various states and at the various cancer centers on the forum.
To start: I took info from several of Steve’s posts   (and probably
missed some of his posts with referral names…so will ask Steve to add/update
after the SABC whenever his schedule allows)
and from a post by “Outnumbered”
and from the original posting on “Oncologists Recommendations”.
Have not checked yet if any websites initially posted are still active.
Know there are probably other TNBC experts that have been
mentioned on the forums that I have not included......so please
post any TNBC expert you know and don't see on the list.

Not sure what the best plan is to update.
Listed the The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) below.
There is a list of the NCI cancer centers by state at http://cancercenters.cancer.gov/
Listed some of the TNBC experts that have been noted on the forums below.

Please add any new names or centers with location.
(include full address and phone number if possible).
If any MD’s no longer at places on below list, please post.
Once the addtions/updates have been posted, a master list can be compiled
If you have other ideas on how to update the list, please share.
Remember the initial post on this forum:
….“We continually get requests for recommendations of doctors who are knowledgeable with regard to TNBC.   Please reply back with your personal recommendations (Dr. Name, address and phone) so that we may compile a list organized by location.   DO NOT reply back with names of doctors to avoid as this could be interpreted as slander.”….

Please post if you have any questions.

Grateful for today…………….Judy

Wish I could edit the above post to just add that I have had family members treated at numerous university hospitals throughout the United States and I have to say that Vanderbilt exhibits an extremely high level of patient satisfaction in numerous ways, from the free valet parking to the ability to view and print your labs and image readings and everything in between. Was quite impressed with the experience.

In Alabama, I am sure Dr. Andre Forerro would be considered a TNBC expert. He is at UAB and is the primary researcher on the abraxane/tigatuzumab trial. He has (has) a video clip on this site discussing TNBC and is part of the consortium as well. Sorry I don't have contact info handy, but will try to add it at a later date.
He is very kind and always seems to be "in the know" as I ask him about studies and results or gladly tells you if he's not familiar (a wonderful trait for a doctor).

In Columbus, Ohio the very best for any breast cancer is Dr. Charles Shapiro at the James Cancer Hospital at OSU. He is the head of the Breast Cancer Department there. He doesn't take many patients these days as that he is involved in a lot of research. I suspect he took me because I am triple negative.

Hello all.   I was recently diagnosed with TNBC and am looking for an Oncologist in the Atlanta area that specializes in it.   I know there are no recommendations yet posted for Georgia but was hoping that perhaps one of you may have one.  I have an appt later this week with an oncologist recommended by my surgeon but wanted to be able to have a couple of opinions and definitely see someone with TN expertise.   Thanks very much.

Hi Kado, I am sorry you have been diagnosed. I wish I knew someone in Atlanta who specialized in TNBC.   I am just up the road from you in Tennessee, but I went to see Dr. Anders at University of North Carolina Lineberger Cancer Center for a third opinion.  I was very impressed with her and the facility.  Of course, it would add an additional 2.5 hours for you to drive there - I think it was a 7 hour drive for me.  I know Dr. Mayer at Vanderbilt is also a TNBC specialist- that wouldn't be so far for you to travel. Vanderbilt is right off the interstate with easy access. There is a general oncologist here in Chattanooga who is very good and goes to the San Antonio meetings every year - Dr. Larry Schlabach.  I have friends who have gone to him. One is a TNBC patient who had 5 positive nodes and is over five years out.

Thank you for the quick reply. It is surprising I am having a difficult time finding one in Atlanta, but I'll definitely consider looking into the two that you suggest.  The travel wouldn't be that bad if it was the right decision to make.  Thank you very much.

For the Seattle Area:

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center / Seattle Cancer Care Alliance
has some great clincals for TNBC. We went there for a second opinion and they were great.

North End - Everett:

Oliver Batson, MD (Onc) at Providence Everett Cancer Partnership is who my mom is seeing now.
She lives really far north and can't go to Seattle every week for Chemo.
So far so good!

I would 3rd the recommendation for Dr. Ingrid Mayer at Vanderbilt (my mother-in-law) a breast cancer survivor (estrogen positive) was first diagnosed in 1978 and is still living with breast cancer. Dr. Mayer took over her care quite a few years ago. She thinks very highly of Dr. Mayer and Vanderbilt.

Kado,

If you are close enough to Jacksonville, FL and Mayo I saw there was a recommendation from Steve for a doctor there. My mother is currently a patient at Mayo for ovarian cancer. She is having chemo locally here in south Florida but Mayo will be doing her surgery when the time comes. The local oncologist is working with Mayo.

Does anyone have recommendations for SE Michigan? I'll be happy to post mine once I am farther along and can make a proper assessment.
It will be great if all this information gets compiled and be kept up-to-date.

rmichaels:   Thank you for the additional Seattle, WA info.

FYI:    Just realized Dr Lisa Newman, Univerisity of Michigan Cancer Center has been
mentioned on the forums. Her name will be added to update list.

Lee: Yes, there is a plan to compile this list.
Arlene B, an administrator of the TNBC site, was willing in December to put this forum info
on the TNBC news, resources and tips forum site.
I took the liberty of asking Arlene B to wait until I combined the 3 sources and added
phone numbers. And also to see if we could get as many states covered as possible.
I will wait about one week. Then at least compile an alphabetical list from the above
noted 3 lists.    Then when phone numbers and links are added, Arlene can move to
        TNBC news, resources and tips.

All:   If any one was other ideas for having an updated listed on the forum, please post.
There still will be the matter of adding to the list. Only administrators and a few senior
members can post on TNBC news, resources and tips.
Maybe the master list can be there.   Maybe a forum topic can be made.......for
"additional Oncologists recommendations". Then a senior member could add/update
        the master list.

All:   If any one has the current correct phone for any one already listed, please post.
If you also have a current correct link, also post.
(Have found some phone numbers have already changed)

There are some states that we do not have any TNBC expert MDs for.
Will be combining the above lists from the 3 different sources plus additions
as suggested.

For now, the following are the states that we do not have TNBC expert MDs for:

Alaska
Arizona
Arkansas

If any one has additional resources for states for which there are already some resources,
please feel free to add.
(Note: Prior resources from different sources. Final list will be alphabetical)
Again, will see if there are additional resources before compiling one list.

If any questions, please post.
If any state inadvertently left out, please post.

Thanks.

Thank you all.  I am going to try to get an appointment with Dr. Regan, Zelnak or Dhillon at Winship/Emory.  I'll definitely also consider Dr. Mayer at Vanderbuilt (even if it is just for a second opinion).  Possibly the others as well.  I also heard from a friend about Dr. Bowen at Georgia Cancer Specialists.  I will post again after I've had experience with any of them, for a recommendation. Thank you for all the help.

Kado - I am in the Atlanta area and while my onc does not specialize in TNBC, he considers Dr. Ruth O'Regan the leading doctor for it in Atlanta. He considers Dr. Lisa Carey THE expert on TNBC and I went to see her for a second opinion in 2010 and 2011. He consults regularly with both.

Hope that helps and I wish you all the best!

When one is looking for oncologists knowledgeable about TNBC, there are various resources.

What is posted here is informational (general information) from members.

These are not recommendations from the TNBC Foundation.

The decision about your treatment team is yours.

Some things to consider when gathering information for your TNBC treatment team.

1. Check if there is a NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network) Cancer Center

           https://www.nccn.org/members/network.asp" rel="nofollow - https://www.nccn.org/members/network.asp in your area.

2. Check if there is a NCI (National Cancer Institute) Cancer Center in your area.

For appointments at a NCI Center, ask for the TNBC oncologist.

        http://www.cancer.gov/researchandfunding/extramural/cancercenters" rel="nofollow - http://www.cancer.gov/researchandfunding/extramural/cancercenters

        http://www.cancer.gov/researchandfunding/extramural/cancercenters/find-a-cancer-center" rel="nofollow - http://www.cancer.gov/researchandfunding/extramural/cancercenters/find-a-cancer-center

3. Some members have 2nd opinions when making decisions on their treatment plan.

2nd opinions for any/all parts (chemo-surgery-radiation) of the treatment plan (when indicated).

If one's pathology report was not done by a breast pathologist, a pathology 2nd opinion by

by a breast pathologist (at a NCCN or NCI center if possible) is something to strongly consider.

4. Some members have a local oncologist and have a consult with a NCCN/NCI oncologist.

Then re-consult (2nd opinion) with the NCCN/NCI oncologist if needs arises

(when frequent travel to a NCCN or NCI center is an issue)

5. The physicians on the TNBC Foundation Scientific Advisory Board are listed at:

        http://www.tnbcfoundation.org/ourpeople.htm" rel="nofollow - http://www.tnbcfoundation.org/ourpeople.htm

6. Some members newly diagnosed will post on this forum topic/thread asking for information

about resources in their area. Some members will start a new forum/thread with a title

like: Looking for TNBC MDs in the _________ area.

7. Start to obtain your reports (labs/imaging/xrays/consults/pathology reports etc) and organize your

     own personal medical record.

In addition to the above, some considerations/information from members from recent posts are:

(Physicians are medical oncologists unless noted otherwise)

fiddler,

Hoping you have found your treatment team.
But in case, you are still looking for additional information about oncologists knowledgeable
about TNBC in the state of Washington.

Yesterday, I posted on http://forum.tnbcfoundation.org/topic10891.html" rel="nofollow - http://forum.tnbcfoundation.org/topic10891.html
about the C4YW: Annual Conference for Young Women Affected by Breast Cancer
to be held in Bellevue, WA (on Seattle's Eastside) in Feb.
I noticed that the workshop on TNBC will be given by Dr. Julie Gralow.
    Workshop Y | Triple-Negative Breast Cancer
Julie R. Gralow, MD, Professor, Medical Oncology, University of Washington School of Medicine,
Director, Breast Medical Oncology, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Member, Clinical Research Division,
    Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
(This is all I know).

Maybe some one else (in addition to Rach who posted above ) will see your post and post if they
have information TNBC oncologists around Washington......or have information on David Dong, MD
at Swedish.

Glad you found this website. Sorry, you/some one has a breast cancer diagnosis.

General information:
Check if there is a NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network) Cancer Center
           https://www.nccn.org/members/network.asp" rel="nofollow - https://www.nccn.org/members/network.asp     in your area.

Check if there is a NCI (National Cancer Institute) Cancer Center in your area.
For appointments at a NCI Center, ask for the TNBC oncologist.

I have to add my wonderful cancer facility, the other NCI facility in Texas (M.D. Anderson in Houston is the other). I started here in Dallas at a for profit hospital and received very poor care. Was lucky a friend insisted I go for a second opinion before beginning treatment - a life saving change I am sure.
UT Southwestern Medical Center Simmons Cancer Center, Dallas, Texas
http://www.utswmedicine.org/conditions-specialties/cancer/programs/breast-cancer/
All of my incredible Drs here, in addition to treating patients, are research scientists working on breast cancer projects. My surgeon studies genetic breast cancers - and he's a genius! I have not one single complaint about anything here - nothing - and I've been going for 5 years!

-------------
IDC, 2.2 cm, Stage IIb,lumpectomy 1/30/09 ACx4,Tx4 36 rads
6/1/16 Local recurrence same breast, same spot 1.8cm Carb.4x every 3 wks, Taxol 12x once wk. Dbl Mast. PCR!! Reconstruction fail, NED!

Any updates to this list?  Additions/changes/deletions?  Please reply and I'll add them to this list and repost.

1. Check if there is a NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network) Cancer Center
     https://www.nccn.org/members/network.asp" rel="nofollow - https://www.nccn.org/members/network.asp
    in your area.

2. Check if there is a NCI (National Cancer Institute) Cancer Center in your area.
For appointments at a NCI Center, ask for the TNBC oncologist.
        http://www.cancer.gov/researchandfunding/extramural/cancercenters" rel="nofollow - http://www.cancer.gov/researchandfunding/extramural/cancercenters
         http://www.cancer.gov/researchandfunding/extramural/cancercenters/find-a-cancer-center" rel="nofollow - http://www.cancer.gov/researchandfunding/extramural/cancercenters/find-a-cancer-center

3. Some members have 2nd opinions when making decisions on their treatment plan.
2nd opinions for any/all parts (chemo-surgery-radiation) of the treatment plan (when indicated).
If one's pathology report was not done by a breast pathologist, a pathology 2nd opinion by
by a breast pathologist (at a NCCN or NCI center if possible) is something to strongly consider.

4. Some members have a local oncologist and have a consult with a NCCN/NCI oncologist.
Then re-consult (2nd opinion) with the NCCN/NCI oncologist if needs arises
(when frequent travel to a NCCN or NCI center is an issue)

5. The physicians on the TNBC Foundation Scientific Advisory Board are listed at:
http://www.tnbcfoundation.org/ourpeople.htm" rel="nofollow - http://www.tnbcfoundation.org/ourpeople.htm

6. Some members newly diagnosed will post on this forum topic/thread asking for information
about resources in their area. Some members will start a new forum/thread with a title
like: Looking for TNBC MDs in the _________ area.

7. Start to obtain your reports (labs/imaging/xrays/consults/pathology reports etc) and organize your
     own personal medical record.

In addition to the above, some considerations/information from members from recent posts are:
(Physicians are medical oncologists unless noted otherwise)

For DALLAS TEXAS I cannot rave enough about UT Southwesterns Harold C. Simmons Cancer Center.  I fully believe if I hadn't switched to having my care there after my initial TERRIBLE malpractice worthy care at another Dallas facility I would not be alive today (SECOND OPINIONS SAVE LIVES!!).  It is an NCI designated research facility and I have received stellar care there for 6 years.
http://www.utswmedicine.org/conditions-specialties/cancer/

My care here is so far and above the care I received at the first facility, at one point in the beginning stages of appointments here my husband looked at me and said, "are we being punked? Can they possibly give this level of attention to EVERY cancer patient??!?!?" And the answer is YES THEY CAN! and they do.  And as icing on the cake you can have all of your surgical or other hospital stays at Zale Lipshy University Hospital a stones throw away from the cancer center.  It is the Ritz Carlton of hospitals!  The hospital is so beautiful, the care there so exemplary, that again my husband and I felt like we'd stumbled on a beautiful medical secret - how can it be that EVERYONE isn't using this place?
https://www.utswmedicine.org/hospitals-clinics/zale-lipshy/
http://www.utsouthwestern.edu/newsroom/news-releases/year-2014/nov/recognized-for-patient-satisfaction.html
If you are in the early days of diagnosis - or if at any time you have the slightest feeling that you might want another opinion - GET A SECOND OPINION!  We feel such a sense of urgency to start our treatment once we hear CANCER, TN, AGRESSIVE that often we skip this second opinion step.  The absolute best decision I ever made was going for my second opinion.

I was treated at MD Anderson. Then I temporarily moved to Arlington TX to be treated by Dr. Karel Dicke at Arlington Cancer Center. I feel so much better after I came to Arlington. Dr. Dicke is a brilliant and passionate 74-year-old doctor. He used to be the head of the Bone Marrow Transplant department at MD Anderson. Dr. George Blumenschein, former head of Breast Center at MD Anderson, founded Arlington Cancer Center with Dr. Dicke many years ago. They were ahead of their time. They have been using Cisplatin for stage III and IV breast cancer for 20 or 30 years and had great results. The following are some of their old papers:

In spite of his age, Dr. Dicke is very forward thinking and innovative. He has been using Caris and Foundation reports for years. He said that when chemo was first invented, doctors did not believe in chemo. Later, they all used it. When bone marrow transplant was first invented, doctors did not trust it; later they all adopted for certain cancers. Now many question Caris report and Foundation reports and do not use them. Years later, these tools will be the standard practice.

Dr. Dicke treats all kinds of cancers in addition to TNBC and other breast cancer. I feel good here because I am surrounded by many of Dr. Dicke's stage IV patients who are NED for many many years. Among them, many are stage IV breast cancer NED patients. According to Dr. Dicke, cancer treatment should be based on the protein expressed by the tumor and gene mutation instead of sticking to ACT or Carboplatin for breast cancer. If you are looking for an oncologist who goes beyond the standard of care, I would highly recommend Dr. Dicke.

Hi Blair,

I haven't seen any new posts/recommendations.  Besides what I'll post below, Kellyless posted another recommendation for Texas.  I think it's a couple of replies above this one.

I highly recommend Dr. Kathy Miller at IU Simon Cancer Center for the treatment of TNBC. Dr. Miller graduated from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and has been an oncologist, professor and researcher at IU Simon for years. She did an amazing job in my case, and when questions were raised about my TNBC status (path did first test and even though it showed 1 on IHC, they then did a FISH test which showed borderline results for HER-2 +), she went through a detailed chart to show me why my tumor was indeed triple negative and encouraged me to participate in a phase III clinical trial involving adding Carboplatin and Veliparib to Taxol and A/C. Clearly, it worked as I had clean sentinel lymph nodes and no residual evidence of disease (tumor was completely gone) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Dr. Miller can be found at IU Hospital's website. Her office is at:

I was diagnosed in September 2015, de novo stage IV triple negative (one met to liver) and am finishing my third month of Paclitaxel. I too am looking to identify experts in metastatic TNBC who are based in the Northeast. Dr. Winer at Dana Farber wasn't taking new patients when I called in September. Any suggestions? I am being given the standard of care right now, and really want to make sure the next steps we take are well informed and based on the latest research and treatment options.

In North Texas UT Southwestern Simmons Cancer Center continues to reign supreme, with MD Anderson in Houston being the best in Texas (and the world).

Dr. Vincente Valero at MD Anderson is mentioned several times here for IBC, but he is also an expert on TNBC and HER2+ as well.  He's awesome professionally, and personally!

Dallas, TX - at UT Southwestern (since my docs mentioned years ago are gone now)
Surgical Oncology - Dr. Marilyn Leitch - head of the dept. of Surgical Breast Oncology - she's a rockstar
Medical Oncology - Dr. Nisha Unni - Gifted Dr. and so supportive!
Radiation Oncology - Dr. Ann Spangler - She's still my husbands favorite Dr. I've had all these years.  She's wicked smart, always on top of all the latest and greatest treatments and trials available.
Wound Care Specialist - Dr. Jean de Leon - currently my favorite Dr. in the world :) she blew my mind the way she healed my wounds in 6 weeks, after 8 months of all my other Dr.'s trying.  When I think of "Healer" I think of her - Love Her Dearly. If your wounds take even ONE WEEK longer than they are supposed to for healing, demand an appointment with her - it makes her sad when someone has suffered for months needlessly, she WANTS to get her hands on you early if you have any healing issues at all. I have zero lymph nodes left on the left side and had 3 removed on the right - making me compromised in both arms.  Now that I've seen her, when I hurt my arms or hands I take a pic of the wound and email it to her, she answers me on how to proceed with care, or tells me to come on in that day for her to check it.  She's my anti-lymphadema weapon now Heart
Gynecology - In case you are changing all your Dr.s to UT, Dr. Karen Bradshaw, she's the medical director of the Dept. of OB GYN and specializes in 40+ year old women, "disorders affecting the mature woman, Menopausal symptoms, post-menopausal, mood disorders and preventative bone loss treatment"  Yep, she's tailor made for the post TNBC treatment woman!  She cracks me up every time I see her.  Another very smart Dr. with loads of experience.

I recently moved to the Knoxville, Tennessee area.  I've been looking for an oncologist who specializes in TNBC, with no luck.  I have not researched Vanderbilt oncologists in Nashville yet, but that would be an option, as Nashville is only 2-1/2 hours from Knoxville. I was so glad to see this thread and am going to browse through it for any recommendations.  In the meantime, if anyone has any oncologists they would recommend in the Knoxville/Nashville area, please post if you don't mind.  Thank you.

Dear tocolt,

I have several oncologists I can recommend to you. But I don't give names to people without a SAGE Waiver and Release form signed. Please write me at
steve@sagepatientadvocates.org and I will send you my phone number and we can talk and I am happy to not only send you the names but make a referral for you if you wish.

Sorry, that is the way I work. I need to understand a bit about your case. Also, please
be aware that neither SAGE Patient Advocates or I charge for services. I am not a medical professional and do not give medical advice but hopefully I can be useful to you.

with my love to all here,

Steve

p.s. I know it is a bit of a trip, but I also like a Breast Medical oncologist in San Diego,
where I live. Will give you her name as well.

Good luck, tocolt!!!
