Hi there,
My mom was treated with the standard neoadjuvant AC+T & also received 5-fu as part of her CMF adjuvant regimen. 6 months later she recurred with lung mets and after a whole year on a parp trial, the oncologist put her on xeloda. Here is my question.. Isn't xeloda and 5-fu the same? Doesn't she basically put her back on a drug that she already progressed on since it didn't prevent the mets?

I don't know your answer but I would ask the same question directly to her oncologist, email it to him/her in writing if needbe, and save a copy.

rstar,
Good question and probably one to ask your mother's oncologist. I found this description of the two: "Capecitabine is a rationally designed 5-FU pro-drug developed to mimic the continuous infusion of 5-FU while avoiding complications and inconvenience of intravenous administration. Capecitabine is absorbed intact from the gastrointestinal tract, converted enzymatically to active 5-FU, and released directly into the tumor. I did ask the oncologist and she said that while the treatment was given to her earlier in a different setting before she had mets, it's still remains an option to use it in the metastatic setting. Maybe because tumors go thru a genetic transformation sometimes? Not sure, but honestly I'm still not convinced..

rstar,
Sometimes Xeloda is often used in the first line of mets treatment to the lungs as it's easily tolerable and in pill form.
Have you considered getting a second opinion for treatment options?
